All aboard Podsquad, it's Pod thread number 4.

In case you were wondering:

  • What is this (surprisingly) long-running thread about? A unique lunatic rescue Podenco, known as Pod. Featuring his pals, Stanley, GentleHowl, BabyPod, GentleBounce, Fastest and Princess and many more.
  • What makes you so special that you get your own thread? See above

Seriously, if anyone is considering getting a teenage/rescued/sight-hound/Podenco/all of the above and has NO idea what they're doing, please enjoy the previous instalments from the day we brought him home, to now, six months later. Posts will oscillate wildly from euphoric to mental breakdown and back again.

Here is thread No. 3 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/thedoghouse/5248472-they-love-a-bit-of-him-podlife?page=1

Here is thread No. 2 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/thedoghouse/5197068-the-pod-cast?page=39&reply=141216881

And thread No. 1 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/thedoghouse/5177112-oh-my-giddy-god?page=1

Never a dull moment with the Pod. Well done him, nice that the judges recognised the gorgeous boy he can be when not over tired and over stimulated! 😁

HangingOver · 08/12/2025 23:35

We're currently in the middle of a huge storm in Cornwall. Pod is in a stand off with his bladder. He's gallumping around the house yelling and biting things because he needs to go so badly but as soon as I show him the outside world he runs and hides. 😂

Is he giving you the filthy looks because obviously, the weather is your fault, you chose this weather, you ordered it in specially, just to piss him off?

The LWBHound will go out the door and once his entire length is outside.. (and he is a long boi) will piss so the puddle is BARELY qualifying as 'outdoors' then bustle back in..

The Stick Dog will race out, piss fast (eventually after holding it for hours and yes, being a crabby twat because she's uncomfy) and then race back in like the devils up her arse then glare at us for ages as its OUR fault.

Fingers x Podface caves and pisses outside soon!

I'm not sure whether to post on here or start a new thread (I might do both!) but we are about to take on a gorgeous Podenco in a few weeks and I am so excited!! We already have two dogs who will be fab with her as they're extremely loving and gentle (when they want to be!) and they've already met for a couple of walks which went great.

I'm a bit nervous because she's never had a home (bless her) and so she isn't house trained. It's not a problem at all (we've had rescues and fosters before so know how the adjustment / settling in period can be!) but what do you wise people suggest in terms of crates or night-time / sleeping arrangements??

We will obviously take her to to the toilet before bed (as well as walks in the morning and afternoon!) but never had a dog who hasn't lived in a house before (she has been in the shelter almost 3 years 😭) so just want to make sure she feels as happy and as comfortable as possible!

LadyGrillingSole · 10/12/2025 12:29

Hi Starlight1984 🙂

I've never had a pod, but have 2 greyhounds. You might find that, having two dogs already in the home, she'll pick up toilet training from them? As long as she's given regular access to outdoors, I'm sure it won't take long 😎
She may find the T.V. fascinating ( ours kept looking behind it for the people 😄).

Patience and kindness are the only attributes needed to be a good dog mum/dad, and you're adopting a pod so I'm sure you'll be absolutely fine 😊
Edit to say, we never used a crate. Ours have memory foam dog beds or can choose a couch if they'd rather 😀

Edited

We have two lurchers (both male) so yes, we're hoping she'll pick up on going to the toilet from them as our last foster did😊

Aw that is so cute about the TV 😍Weirdly one of ours LOVES the TV and can sit watching for ages and the other one never even glances at it?!

We only thought about the crate in case she felt safer in there due to coming from kennels?! But no, our two have free reign of the house and I'm hoping she will be the same once she's settled and comfortable 😊

She will have access to outside pretty much all day until about 10-11pm at night and I will probably pop downstairs through the night to open the back door just in case (for the first few nights anyway...)

Oh welcome to the Pod Squad 😁 They are a joy. A silly goofy bitey jumpy hunty joy. (Maybe don't read my earlier threads, not all Pods are as naughty as this Pod)

Where's she from? I've bet I've been admiring her on one of the rescue pages

😆I was going to say, you have made me slightly nervous when I've read through your earlier posts 😅Although we do know she's 5 years old and very chilled... 😊We've only ever had one dog from a puppy and he's by far the naughtiest and most high maintenance of the bunch!

it's a long story as to how we have ended up agreeing to have her as we weren't actually wanting another dog (DH would say it's because I never seem to want an easy life 😂) however I believe she's been advertised on the UK Podencos for adoption FB page??

The first time we met her she was so scared and nervous and wouldn't come anywhere near us. We just stood nearby and let her come over in her own time. The second time she was a bit more curious and was edging over slowly. Then last week she full on backed into me to have her bum scratched and let me stroke her head 😊

We're taking her out this weekend for a big walk, then the same again next weekend and then hopefully get to take her home over Christmas week 😍

spiderlight · 12/12/2025 09:52

I can't wait to 'meet' her, @Starlight1984 - she sounds lovely. What colour is she?

Me neither @spiderlight 😊

She is tan and white. Hang on I will try and upload a photo...

This is she 😊

diddl · 12/12/2025 11:24

Oh she's lovely.

We had a rescue & he was about 5 when we got him.

Maybe pure luck but he never had any accidents in the 11yrs that we had him.

He rarely toileted in the garden unless he had a bad stomach & asked to be let out.

Only wee'd in the garden in his final couple of years.

He just seemed to associate his walks with that!

Conversely the dog we have now that we've had since a pup always wees when he goes in the garden even if he has just come back from a walk.

I suppose that might be because when we were training him we let him in the garden sometimes rather than out for a walk?

Starlight1984 · 12/12/2025 11:36

Thank you @diddl - I love her already 😊

Aw that's reassuring! And yes actually now I think about it ours are the same. The one we have had since he was a puppy will always wee in the garden yet the rescues we have / had generally don't tend to.

We do make sure they get out for 3 walks a day and always a short toilet walk before bed so hopefully there won't be anything in her system overnight anyway?! I'm optimistic that she will follow the lead of our other dogs as @LadyGrillingSole said 😊

eggandonion · 12/12/2025 12:19

She's lovely. Im on the lookout for a perfect rescue dog but need someone smaller 😎I hope she's found a forever home.

diddl · 12/12/2025 14:05

Yes this is similar to what we do.

Our old boy would get up with me, I'd shower, dress, breakfast & I'd take him out.

I used to be incredulous when I read on here about letting dogs into the garden first thing.

I used to think why not just take them out when you get up?😊

Coupled with the fact that ours just wouldn't wee in the garden!

Since having a pup I get it!

MaxandMoritz · 12/12/2025 15:14

She's a lovely dog!

I used to take my dogs out for a walk first thing too. Then present lurcher girl came to stay and decided there was no point in going out in the cold and dark of early winter mornings so we have a walk around 10am.

Now she's older and her bladder isn't what it was she needs out in the garden for a quick wee when I get up, then the walk later. Suits both of us!

SilverBlue56 · 12/12/2025 17:19

What's her name? 🥰

Starlight1984 · 15/12/2025 09:04

SilverBlue56 · 12/12/2025 17:19

What's her name? 🥰

She's called Bonnie 😊I took her out at the weekend for a walk and she is so lovely. She's so nervous and scared of the outside world but we stayed away from anywhere busy and just let her wander at her own pace, have lots of sniffs and watch the squirrels 😊

spiderlight · 15/12/2025 11:21

She's beautiful! You're going to have so much fun with her 💕

eggandonion · 15/12/2025 11:53

I love dogs smiling in photos. Have fun together. 😄

Can I interest anyone in a lightly used Podenco?

Today when it was time to go home he played keep away with me in his favourite mousing field in the dark and indescribable mud and pouring rain for thirty sodding minutes then came home and ate the butter.

OP posts:
HangingOver · 17/12/2025 17:44

Also his new friend who is like an adorable tiny bull greeted me so enthusiastically in said mud that I got cow poo water in my eyes, mouth and hair.
