All aboard Podsquad, it's Pod thread number 4.

In case you were wondering:

  • What is this (surprisingly) long-running thread about? A unique lunatic rescue Podenco, known as Pod. Featuring his pals, Stanley, GentleHowl, BabyPod, GentleBounce, Fastest and Princess and many more.
  • What makes you so special that you get your own thread? See above

Seriously, if anyone is considering getting a teenage/rescued/sight-hound/Podenco/all of the above and has NO idea what they're doing, please enjoy the previous instalments from the day we brought him home, to now, six months later. Posts will oscillate wildly from euphoric to mental breakdown and back again.

Here is thread No. 3 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/thedoghouse/5248472-they-love-a-bit-of-him-podlife?page=1

Here is thread No. 2 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/thedoghouse/5197068-the-pod-cast?page=39&reply=141216881

And thread No. 1 https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/thedoghouse/5177112-oh-my-giddy-god?page=1

Thanks everyone. The painkillers helped. He pooped again when we got back at 5am and then basically fell over from tiredness. Got DP up to poop again at 7 and he's still asleep now. My poor little egg.

Poor Pod. 😕 It must be miserable for him.

LadyGrillingSole · 26/04/2025 15:11

I think that poor Pod has had more than his fair share of this pigging giardia business now, universe, give it a rest!

It's also really hard on you and Mr Hanging when you are hardly getting any sleep 😟 Hoping for a speedy recovery, young Pod 🙏

WiddlinDiddlin · 26/04/2025 15:26

Yup, full anal glands that are sore will mess up the 'i need a poo' message and can make them reluctant to poop in the same way arsehole pain makes us reluctant to poop!

I would ask the vet if you can have some pain meds on hand in case he shows such symptoms again, just for short term use in case its over a weekend/late at night. A sympathetic vet will do that!

HangingOver · 27/04/2025 10:19

Urgh god, last night was awful. He woke DP up at 2 who walked him for nearly and hour then DP woke me up in despair amatuer and I took over.

He had a ride in the car, a run and a shit and I eventually persuaded him to go to sleep at 5.30 when he'd had his painkillers.

I cannot keep doing this. Healing vibes for Pod!

Bupster · 27/04/2025 10:58

Sending love, not loving the horror. Did they express the anal glands or whatever they do with them?

LadyGrillingSole · 27/04/2025 12:18

Good grief, giardia + butt glands acting up are a viscous combination for your whole household, Hanging 😟

Maybe a call to your vet for advice, surely there's something else they can do for poor Pod 🤒

HangingOver · 28/04/2025 23:34

I am in actual despair. I'll have to bring him back to the vet tomorrow. He absolutely frantic and he has been for hours. He's been like this since 7.30.

OP posts:
FeralWoman · 28/04/2025 23:45

That’s no good. Is there any pain relief medication left for him so you can all get some sleep? Does he need X-rays or ultrasound done to check why he’s in so much pain? I hope that he settles soon. Poor Pod.

HangingOver · 29/04/2025 01:11

Poor little egg. He's had his painkillers and been to the field where he charged off in the dark and did a giant poo. I'll take him in tomorrow and get some more painkillers and some advice. His finally sat down so hopefully sleep will follow. Urgh. T'is awful.

Fingers x for a better solution for the Painful Pod... do the vets think the pain is more the giardia or the anal glands - anal glands can be removed if they're problematic.

FeralWoman · 29/04/2025 05:37

So it definitely sounds like a poo problem if he was withholding the poo until he had pain relief.

@WiddlinDiddlin Really?! I had no idea that they could be removed. Does it have any side effects for the dog to not have them? Don’t they need them to lubricate passing a poo?

LadyGrillingSole · 29/04/2025 06:38

I'm so sorry you are going through this, Hanging, poor Pod must be feeling absolutely rotten 😭 and you not much better 😩.

I have everything crossed for a helpful intervention from Pod's vet, he's been suffering long enough (as have you).

eggandonion · 29/04/2025 13:26

How is he now?

spiderlight · 29/04/2025 13:39

Oh, poor lad, and poor you - you must be exhausted. I hope the vet has been able to suggest something.

Nope they just leave scent, it's not a poo-lube.

Its not a surgery vets tend to do without good reason, because its surgery very close to the sphincter and obvious a 'dirty' surgery - there will be faeces passing verrrrrrry close to the wound sites - but its not uncommon.

The vets i used to work at would have one day a month or every two months where all we did was bums... because it REALLY ponged the surgery out so we couldn't do it on a normal surgery day (it was a very small building!).

HangingOver · 29/04/2025 15:39

Back at the vets. Will let you know.

I swear I am not making this up. Pod is borking at this in the waiting room.

Maybe get his eyes tested while he's there, Hanging 😂

Silly hound! ( mine would never be so ridiculous, oh no, greyhounds are well known for being super clever! They can run fast, and .... um, lie down 😂)

HangingOver · 29/04/2025 16:35

We have more painkillers and another tablet, sachets of probiotics and he's on a special diet (hydra something) for a month. And hes going back in a week to check his progress. He's currently having a joyful bounce around his favourite paddock.

She said the Giardia has probably cleared but his gut is likely really inflamed and irritated 😔

eggandonion · 29/04/2025 16:58

His poor tummy. Hopefully he feels better soon.

WiddlinDiddlin · 29/04/2025 17:16

Healing thorts for the Hurty Bummed Pod. It is miserable having dodgy guts and a hurty arse!

LadyGrillingSole · 29/04/2025 18:37

Poor Pod, his tummy must be so sore 😢

I'm sure with the sheer will of the Hanging household and your Podsquad giving the universe the hairy eyeball, the bravest brave boy will be better forthwith ( looks around at universe menacing like 😠)

And maybe the veterinary expertise and special diet will help, too 😎

eggandonion · 29/04/2025 18:39

Our vet liked to recommend a spoonful of tuna in oil for constipated doggies.

HangingOver · 01/05/2025 09:17

Good morning.

Pod's weird white food has gone down a treat, which is just as well, given he's not allowed any treats (although I do still have to give him one to get in the car).

Pod was doing his civic duty this morning.
