Where does your dog sleep?

We’re getting a dog soon, and will be setting up her bed in the kitchen-tucked away and nice and calm-like a crate. But wondered how many folks let their dogs sleep
upstairs at night?

In the bed - under the duvet Grin

Comparethemarket · 05/03/2025 08:01

In a corner of my room, but in his own bed. He knows he's not allowed in my bed and doesn't try to get in.

We go away quite a lot and I think (hope) the consistency of always sleeping in the corner of my room helps him settle.

LandSharksAnonymous · 05/03/2025 08:02

All four in the bed. Two occasionally amble off to my daughters rooms but they always finds their way back…

Our dog always used to sleep in our bedroom at night, we were in a one bed flat so he’d move between the sofa in the living area and our bedroom (sometimes on our bed but not at night as he’d get up and move due to being disturbed by using moving).
We live in a bungalow now and he usually sleeps in the sitting room (either sofa or his bed which is set up in there). As soon as we get up in the morning, he comes and jumps onto our bed. I know that’s anathema to some people (esp. on mumsnet) but we don’t mind.
It depends what you want-if you want to allow him upstairs then do but I think your idea of a nice cozy corner in your kitchen is good - then he has somewhere to chill when you’re there as well. They do like to have somewhere of their own to retreat to.
good luck! We love our dog so so much, he’s very much a part of our family 🥰

Both on the bed although one will occasionally get off and get into his own bed in the corner of the bedroom.

In the kitchen on a bed. She was in a crate for over a year which she liked but it was big and we have ditched it now. After the first few nights when I cuddled her on the sofa she has always slept very well. Our last dog was the same .

showberners · 05/03/2025 08:09

Fdog1: sleeps on her bed in the utility room
Fdog2: sleeps next to her mum in the utility room
Mdog: sleeps in his crate in the kitchen
Fdog3: she's supposed to sleep in her crate in the kitchen, however Dd sneaks her upstairs to her bed Confused

Fdog 1&2 picked there to sleep, mdog crate door stays open unless someone's in season.

Our puppy slept in a crate from day one, downstairs in lounge. He was so destructive chewing furniture he had to be somewhere safe, he would chew bedding in crate, so he just had blankets. He cried first night for 10 minutes and after he went in crate by himself when we said bedtime. At around 10 months old, he started waking up and barking at midnight, we would go down and settle him, but this was happening every night, so we left crate door open and let him sleep where he wanted to, which at the time was next to crate, chewing had improved, furniture was mostly ruined by then. He’s 6 years old now and sleeps where he likes, usually on cold floor in hallway, but will come upstairs a couple of times through the night, but he prefers sleeping somewhere cool.

ProfessionalWhimsicalSkidaddler · 05/03/2025 08:10

Our first two dogs slept either on the floor or on the bed snuggled up to us in some way. The newest dog sleeps downstairs and occasionally comes up (as loudly as possible) to check that we are still there/safe and then goes back downstairs. Sometimes he will lie at the very bottom of the bed but never for more than 30-60 mins. When I fall asleep on the sofa he will lie at the furthest point away on the sofa. He never sits on the sofa or snuggles which is obviously heartbreaking. Where the sleep will likely depend on the breed and the individual doggie.

Youagain2025 · 05/03/2025 08:12

On the stairs 🤷‍♀️

FrannyScraps · 05/03/2025 08:12

Ours sleeps on the sofa or his bed in the living room, his choice. Sometimes the kitchen floor in the summer when it's hot.

CorrectionCentre · 05/03/2025 08:13

On my bed 😊

Nannyfannybanny · 05/03/2025 08:13

Are you getting a puppy? Our youngest is now 18 months old, she was crated next to our bed at first, so we could hear her stir and outside in the night. When she got bigger, bigger crate just outside the bedroom. The other one, now 9 has a bed in the corner of our bedroom. Youngest now sleeps on the bed.

EdithStourton · 05/03/2025 08:14

The two of them curl up together in a very cosy bed in the kitchen.

Ineedanewsofa · 05/03/2025 08:15

Downstairs in the dining room next to the radiator in DDs old playpen with her bed in it. She has a crate in the kitchen which she’ll happily nap in during the day but wouldn’t sleep in it overnight no matter where we put it. She’s not allowed upstairs as she’s still a puppy (5 months) and is pretty destructive! Her housetraining in 90% there but we felt being nearer the back door was better in the early days

AubernFable · 05/03/2025 08:30

Her spot is the end of the bed, and she sleeps all night like a log. But she’s massive, so me and DH sleep all scrunched up- we’d never kick her off though.

Darkwaters · 05/03/2025 08:33

My plan was for the dog to sleep downstairs in her crate. She sleeps in my bed.

SnoopysHoose · 05/03/2025 08:37

We have two, big guy always with my adult DS, wee one whichever room he chooses but always on a bed. Our dogs have always slept in with us, I couldn't leave them downstairs.

Picklepower · 05/03/2025 08:42

In our room in her bed, never had a crate. We considered getting her to sleep downstairs when we had issues with toileting in th diet but resolved that by changing her food instead

Gcn · 05/03/2025 08:42

Starts in her own bed in our room, migrate to our bed during the night, ends up in under covers by morning.

vodkaredbullgirl · 05/03/2025 08:45

Bed hoping, mine and my eldest daughter.

Been there, got the t-shirt 😂

Coffeeishot · 05/03/2025 08:51

In a crate in my room.it was supposed to be temporary but 3 years later he is still.there, oh well 😀

bugalugs45 · 05/03/2025 08:56

Slept downstairs for first year, as I didn't allow him to do stairs to protect his joints , but now on my bed every night without fail , luckily I'm single with a king size bed , still doesn't leave me a lot of room 🫣

Coffeeishot · 05/03/2025 08:57

To be fair we did try different scenarios that didn't work a big fluffy bed that is now used as a "day bed" for sir everyone sleeps better with this set up, I've never had a dog in my room before all our past dogs were downstairs .
