Where does your dog sleep?

We’re getting a dog soon, and will be setting up her bed in the kitchen-tucked away and nice and calm-like a crate. But wondered how many folks let their dogs sleep
upstairs at night?

In my bed since night two. I can't imagine wanting to sleep any other way now, it's the most wonderful feeling in the world, even when the little bollocks thinks that my 4am trip to the loo means it's MORNING WAKEY HAPPY TIME.

Agree that puppies need to be with you for the first few weeks. Everyone sleeps better if they're in your room for a bit at least. If they cry it out and then they're 'okay', it's generally because they've learned that nobody comes when they cry. No eight week old puppy is okay going from everything they've ever known, sleeping in a pile of puppies and with their mum, to sleeping on their own in a strange cold empty room where nobody responds when they call for comfort. I couldn't bear doing that to my pup.

He slept in a soft crate in the living room for a good few months, quite happily as we stayed with him to settle him for the first few days. Then he could be trusted on a bed in there. We have 2 cats which we shut downstairs as they would wake us at all hours demanding food. This was always fine until baby came along and since then, the cats woke the dog by winding him up at 4am when they heard us up with the baby. Dog would then bark or whine which kept house up. So he's now upstairs in our room. Mostly on the floor (refuses his bed up here) or occasionally if chilly on the end of our bed. We have a throw over the end that protects our bedding and is washed more regularly. He has never been in our bed and would never try. I suspect we will never get him back downstairs now though! He sleeps downstairs whenever he stays with family or friends

hiredandsqueak · 05/03/2025 20:13

Ours starts the evening on the sofa but she is always in her bed in the living room when I get up. She isn't allowed upstairs, she snores like a pig and it would keep me awake. If she stays with exh she sleeps in his bed though but she knows rules are different here.

Branleuse · 05/03/2025 20:18

The dogs sleep wherever they like.

Dogs entire lives are with you. They are social animals and you are their world.

Let them sleep in your room. Its actually really nice

Blanketenvy · 05/03/2025 20:19

Downstairs on the sofa on a heated blanket. But only because I have cats and she's not great with them, otherwise she'd be on my bed!

Glitchymn1 · 05/03/2025 20:23

He used to have his own bedroom, but following a pretty bad op he had to relocate to a downstairs orthopaedic bed in the lounge.

Pancakeflipper · 05/03/2025 20:28

She sleeps upstairs in the office... then stealth-like creeps onto our bed in the early hours and licks my forehead the cuddles next to me.

Before having a dog I be "urgh...grim". Now I'm like "awww"

Newbie8918 · 05/03/2025 21:21

Mine is crate trained and sleeps in her crate in our bedroom. The crate was supposed to eventually move downstairs but it never made it 🤣 she's in the crate until DH gets up for work at 6am and she's allowed in with me for a cuddle for another hour.

She's also occasionally allowed to sleep in the bed all night.

Justgivemesomepeace · 05/03/2025 21:24

In his crate in the kitchen diner with the door open from being a puppy. Now hes older he sleeps on the landing, but has access to the stairs into the kitchen if he wants his crate.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 05/03/2025 21:49

In our bed, right under the covers. He must be touching me at all times 🙈! DH is away tonight and we’re in bed. I’m squished on the edge of our king sized bed and taking up the rest as he’s a lab and likes to sleep on his side with his paws stretched out. He’s meant to sleep at the bottom as he’s so big, kicks us in his sleep and has the most expressive dreams but never mind. If he gets too hot he’ll go to the same corner of the bedroom and sleep on the floor.

During the day he sleeps on the sofa, in a patch of sun by the patio doors in the dining room, on the spare bed, DS’s bed or our bed. He’s doesn’t actually own a dog bed (because all of the beds are his!).

Yes ours never really made it down stairs either I had all the best intentions, but he's no bother overnight I something go. Up to bed early and let him lie on the bed but he either jumps on it or digs,so I probably would get no sleep if i let him on the bed at night.

Pup 1 Crate for 4 weeks x our bed for 13 years.
Pup 2 Crate for 2 weeks x our bed for 11 years.
Pup 3 Crate for 1 week, our bed for the year since.
Pup 4, due here in 2 weeks, will be straight on our bed!

Damsonjam1 · 05/03/2025 22:09

Both my dogs were crate trained as puppies and slept in there. The older one slept in sitting room from about 6 months. At some stage the older one moved upstairs to sleep and younger one likewise after about 6 months of crate. Once they sleep upstairs there is no going back. However I love having them on the bed with me. Exciting times for you OP.

TheMorels · 05/03/2025 22:09

On the sitting room floor. He has a bed, or 3 sofas he could lie on, he just prefers the floor.

We couldn’t stand a dog on the bed or even in the bedroom. I sometimes look after a sibling’s dog and he only sleeps on their bed, so has to sleep on ours. It’s a nightmare.

Fibrous · 05/03/2025 22:21

Two greyhounds. One sleeps in his own bed in the corner of the room, the other one on our bed. The cats usually join in too. We all manage to sleep in the same room without touching each other, miraculously. No one snores particularly loudly either, although some imaginary rabbits are chased.

Whu · 05/03/2025 22:33

One on my bed, one on the sofa - she comes up in the morning for a cuddle but prefers to stretch across the sofa undisturbed at night.
Both have free choice every night.
I love having a dog on the bed!

Raininginparadise2 · 05/03/2025 22:40

My 2 old lady dogs sleep together all snug and cosy in their bed in the kitchen. They are tucked in with a fluffy blanket as their cover. They need a wee very early in the morning and after I've let them outside they then sleep on fluffy cushions at the side of my bed. They sleep happily until I decide to get up. I adore them both. 🥰

biscuitsandbooks · 05/03/2025 07:59

In the bed - under the duvet Grin

Same. She keeps padding around though waking me up lately. It is lovely apart from that

Queenfreak · 05/03/2025 22:46

Huge lurcher. Prefers to sleep on our bed but he is generally kicked off as there isn't much room. He will sleep peacefully in his dog bed in the corner of the room, or downstairs if we have guests. He's pretty easy going. So long as you aren't a squirrel.........

chattyness · 05/03/2025 22:46

Our dog can sleep wherever he wants, he's got his own little den in the hall cupboard next to our bedroom and a big fleece bed on the floor along my side of the bed and if he wants to he can sleep on our bed too which he does sometimes.Right now he's on the bed as we're snuggled up watching tv but he will get down on his fleece soon and settle in for the night when I cover him up 😍

17CherryTreeLane · 05/03/2025 22:50

Ours has an enormous crate under the stairs, but the door is fixed open. He also has a bed outside the crate if he prefers. He is down there all night, but comes up first thing in the morning, for cuddles in our bed. He's far too big to sleep in our bed all night!

livelovelough24 · 05/03/2025 22:58

In her own bed in the living room, for 16.5 years.

skintbuthappyish · 05/03/2025 22:59

In the kitchen. When he's tired he just goes and gets himself into his bed

Loki64 · 05/03/2025 23:00

Wherever he fancies. In my bed or in his own bed which is in the corner of my bedroom.

motherofonegirl · 05/03/2025 23:11

Downstairs. My dogs have the choice of several different dog beds and sofas in the front lounge, back lounge or kitchen. They both usually sleep in the front lounge as it's closer to the stairs. One sleeps on the sofa, the other on the floor.
