Where does your dog sleep?

We’re getting a dog soon, and will be setting up her bed in the kitchen-tucked away and nice and calm-like a crate. But wondered how many folks let their dogs sleep
upstairs at night?

We have the dogs sleep downstairs primarily because going up and down stairs as a puppy is bad for their joints so they were taught as puppies to stay downstairs, and now they won't come upstairs! At least now one is old and arthritic he doesn't have to climb the stairs to go to bed at night. Also it means privacy for me and my husband. Neither of us like the idea of a dog watching!

Buddysno1fan · 05/03/2025 23:36

In my bed, under the covers, theoretically at the foot end. I’m lying on my side and he’s tucked behind my knees at the moment. I’m the daytime he moves between his bed in the kitchen or his bed in the living room, or the sofa.

Maddy70 · 05/03/2025 23:41

Both of ours sleep in bed with us but..... If I had my time over again I would stick with dog beds. Trust me on this..

moaninggiraffe · 05/03/2025 23:46

Pug snoring loudly at my feet, on top of the bed. She requires cuddles until she is sure that I won't get up again, then she lies at my feet.

Normallynumb · 06/03/2025 00:06

We Co sleep... His choice not mineGrin

Empress13 · 17/03/2025 23:23

In his bed snuggled up in his blankets in our bedroom. He literally asks to go up the stairs to bed every night loves his bed😁

CraftyGin · 17/03/2025 23:26

In the very middle of my bed

notquiteruralbliss · 22/03/2025 21:34

Mine (large sighthounds) sleep in bed with me - each has their own 2 pillows but we share duvets (we have 2). One goes to bed before me and the other waits until I go to bed.

VerySkilledFirefighter · 22/03/2025 21:39

Crate in the kitchen. It was hard going when she was a puppy but we never cracked and I’m certain she’s happier and better rested for sleeping there instead of in bed with us.

Housemouse245 · 22/03/2025 21:40

My old dog slept in bed with us and he was so warm and snuggly! Our new dog jumps on our heads during the night so he has to be locked in his crate in our bedroom 🙃

abracadabra1980 · 22/03/2025 21:48

I've always trained mine to sleep in the kitchen and also had a crate in my bedroom (don't have them on the bed as I like one place that is hair free). That way they get used to being with me and away from me. Sometimes I just want to have a dog free hour/night!

My plan was for the dog to sleep downstairs in her crate. She sleeps in my bed.

This was my plan too! Lasted 3 nights 😳

wendywoopywoo222 · 22/03/2025 22:04

On the bed. Generally on the top of my head.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 22/03/2025 23:36

On our bed usually in the middle of us or on top of my feet

CaptainBeanThief · 22/03/2025 23:42

In his bed in the hallway, outside our bedroom door. We live in a bungalow.
He will sometimes go in the living room and sleep on the sofa.
If he fancies a play at 5am he will open our bedroom door either by jumping up at the door handle or cannon balling into the door until it opens and jumping all over us...
He swiftly gets told to get back to bed,
Then at 8 am he does the same to let us know he needs a wee.
He's a sweet boy ( sometimes)

noctilucentcloud · 23/03/2025 09:00

I'm in a bungalow so mine gets the run of the house. He moves around during the night between my bedroom floor, his bed, the floor somewhere else and the sofa. He knows if he needs out to toilet he can come and whine at me (I get very urgent whines if he has an upset tummy bless him). He very occassionally tries his luck for an early breakfast but he's ignored until my alarm goes off!

Astrabees · 24/03/2025 08:02

Our toy poodle and chipoo sleep in a crate in the kitchen. We were undecided about this but on their first night with us from rescue they went and stood outside the crate asking to go in. We still have a little smile about how keen they are to go into the crate at 10pm.

MuttsNutts · 24/03/2025 13:23

I always start them off in a crate downstairs, with me sleeping on the sofa next to them initially, because I like them to get used to a crate in case they ever have to use one, at the vet for example. I put the crate away when they’re no longer destroying things unless they use it particularly during the day and then they always end up with me, on top of my bed.

Current dog was upstairs by 6 months and there she will stay, snuggled into my tummy while I lay on my side and curled around her 🥰

DramaDog · 24/03/2025 14:11

Anywhere they want. My dogs have their own bedroom though. Blush

OnlyHerefortheBiscuits · 24/03/2025 19:18

I had the perfect alcove in the kitchen for a dog bed for my puppy and that's where I put her crate when I brought her home.

However over the course of a year:

  • Then she was allowed the kitchen generally
  • Then she was allowed the downstairs
  • The she was allowed the downstairs, stars and landing up to my bedroom door.
  • Then she was allowed in my room on the floor

.......Now she's on the bed with me 😂

She has the entire house to choose from and can sleep anywhere she wants but of course they want to sleep near their guardian. And they have such short little lives...

I was sooooooooo adamant that no dog would ever ever ever be allowed in my bed!

I woke up from a weird dream the other night and just watched her little belly rising and falling and felt so comforted by her being there. 🥹

I think it depends on the size and type of dog though. Mine is a miniature poodle that doesn't shed or take up much room! Because she is so small she gets a leg rinse in the shower after every walk too...so she's a clean doggy anyway

thistimelastweek · 24/03/2025 19:39

Wherever she chooses.
Options include; our bed, one of two baskets intended for a dog and the soft furnishings designed for people.
She likes to keep us guessing.

Thatcannotberight · 24/03/2025 19:46

Downstairs, in an open cage in the utility room. From day one. She initially had a pen around the cage until she was house trained. She was spayed last week, but it absolutely was not me who carried her up to my bed where she has slept all week, absolutely not. Grin

Eviebeans · 24/03/2025 19:50

He’s an old guy so wherever he likes including upstairs on the bed, downstairs on the sofa - no internal doors closed at night

amber763 · 24/03/2025 19:55

He was good in his crate at night which was in my room but then I let him up on the bed when I was unwell and that was that 😂 now he sleeps under the duvet in the crook at the back of my knees.

feelingalittlehorse · 24/03/2025 20:00

Well. They have a number of options, so it’s how the mood takes them. Normally the sofas, DDog1 occasionally on the top step of the stairs and then both gravitate into the bedroom to wait for me to rise to feed them. There are beds in the room for them.

Never, ever on a human bed though. That is actually a no no in this household.
