Hello PodSquad,

Thank you for being on this crazy ride with us.

Here's the OG thread if anyone wants to go back and laugh at how staggeringly naive I was adopting my first rescue pup: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/the_doghouse/5177112-oh-my-giddy-god?page=1

Could someone please explain who this dog is in my house and what they've done with Pod? Because he's been absolutely angelic today. Truly a wonderful, wonderful dog and even coped with my DF and DPs pal coming over for Sunday dinner and sitting up getting merry on red wine.

Or perhaps the collective will on MN have given me a SERIOUSLY needed good day. What a star. 🥹

Oh my giddy god...... | Mumsnet

I can't actually believe I'm finally typing this... I think I'm getting a dog! I've wanted one of my own my entire life. I had one growing up and l...

Is it possible that you can sit in the car with him and just read/give him a chew/licki thing sometimes, perhaps drive around the block and then back indoors sometimes (not loads as theres a risk this will be frustrating)...

My concern is that he figures out going in the car = always somewhere exciting and starts to get uncontainably silly as a result and once they DO its really hard to fix as its nigh on impossible to stop the car the second he does it, so the level of self reinforcement, ie 'i go crazy = car takes me somewhere great/contines to move' is really high then.

But otherwise, well done Pod, woohoo, his little world is getting bigger, and more sniffies is awesome for Podfaces!

This is great advice Widdlin!

I might have a chat with the trainer about it as initially he was scared of the car and refused to get in it. I wouldn't say he's excited to get in the car...he's more tolerating it (as long as he can poke his nose out the window), while doing evil nervous farts.

Yep, should help with the general car anxiety too - it's what I get folk to do with puppies, or we naturally end up doing ONLY exciting things with them and then wonder why any time the lead goes on or they get in the car they're off their furry tits!

Can I share something I'm privately very worried about. I haven't told DP yet. I mentioned my medical condition... It doesn't generally hold me back, I do some absolutely mad sports and manage it well, I'm strong and fit and work with my body and not against it.... And up until getting Pod the only bit of my body that's never given me and gyp is my knees. And when I've looked after my friends dogs in the past for a week or more...it's never been a problem... But with Pods pulling and lunging... Idk... They really hurt 🥺

One in particular is really hurting tonight but I'm hoping it's because I fell off a trapeze yesterday and not from Podwalking.

Paddock is booked tomorrow! It'll be about force 900 winds but it's only for 30 mins so he'll have fun.

On the plus side, icing my knee while watching MasterChef, have discovered that Pod loves ice cubes!

My right knee can give me gyp walking my girl. I've worked it out to be that as a general rule you can only hold the lead on one side (my left as left handed) so when she pulls I brace but still twist that way from my right knee. Hence the ouch.

For me the walking belt helps as the pull is usually more central or I can use either arm to hold the lead across myself and prevent the twist.

(Just for reference, healthy 32yr old but that knee can really freaking hurt some nights! Dog is very healthy 7yr old 25+kg)

WiddlinDiddlin · 18/11/2024 22:51

Defo investigate walking belts, the sort used for Cani-X, and a bungee lead... suspect your trainer may know about that sort of thing, or know someone who does!

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 19/11/2024 09:24

Ahhh @HangingOver this is such a lovely thread. Look at him! What a lucky boy he is to have been found by you.

HangingOver · 19/11/2024 12:44

Thanks, I'll put the leads on the list of things to talk to trainer about.

I can't quite believe I'm writing this... I am in the living room, sitting of the Sofa of Divine Temptation, and Pod is asleep in my lap.

For some reason I decided feck it, I'll give it a try today... Purged living room of cushions and blankets (well, threw them on the stairs) and let the Pod in.

Predictably he dived jaws-first at the sofa but I took his blankie in and firmly redirected each time and praised him like mad each time he took the blanket instead.

He eventually got bored of arguing and has gone to sleep with his head in my lap 🥹

Time in here will obviously be very strictly supervised as it's our relaxation place (at least it was before Pod) but I think that's an amazing bit of progress!!

That is great, he really is doing incredibly well (as are you!).

MaxandMoritz · 19/11/2024 12:49

It probably seems like an eternity but you've had him such a short while and made a lot of progress!

WiddlinDiddlin · 19/11/2024 17:03

Poor Pod is especially tragic this morning.

I booked the secure field for half an hour this morning... admittedly it was raining and a bit parky when I poked the head outside this morning so I popped his fleecey coat on and me, Pod and DP jumped in the car.

As soon as we got into the field it started PISSING WITH SNOW (haven't had snow in this part of SW in about 8 years, and even then it was in January!!). So we were there long enough for Pod to do his business and then went straight back home.

Pod is working off his feelings in his cardboard pile next tot the radiator and the heating is up to 11.

For anyone on the 'gram, there's quite a funny video of Pod's 4 minute walk in the snow. He looks DISGUSTED.

We saw a man in shorts with an eager Spaniel on the way home and we all agreed this was obscene behaviour.

Hope everyone has a nice snow day ❄️
