Hello PodSquad,

Thank you for being on this crazy ride with us.

Here's the OG thread if anyone wants to go back and laugh at how staggeringly naive I was adopting my first rescue pup: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/the_doghouse/5177112-oh-my-giddy-god?page=1

Could someone please explain who this dog is in my house and what they've done with Pod? Because he's been absolutely angelic today. Truly a wonderful, wonderful dog and even coped with my DF and DPs pal coming over for Sunday dinner and sitting up getting merry on red wine.

Or perhaps the collective will on MN have given me a SERIOUSLY needed good day. What a star. 🥹

Oh my giddy god...... | Mumsnet

I can't actually believe I'm finally typing this... I think I'm getting a dog! I've wanted one of my own my entire life. I had one growing up and l...

OMG he has legs that match his ears

GeminiGiggles · 16/11/2024 20:26

Been away for a few days as our home life has exploded in spectacular fashion here too.

But ahhh what happy updates! Will definitely be working out how to send a dm love nothing more than seeing a happy woofer 😁

I'm glad your trainer is so supportive and covering all bases too.

You will (hopefully) reach a stage soon where the hard days feel so much harder and like it's worse than it used to be. But when you sit in the evening and he's fallen asleep you realise it actually wasn't it's just that the good days have started to outweigh the bad enormously so what was your usual heightened state of awareness has start to subside a bit so in the bigger picture it's a good thing. I hope that's made sense!

Spa sounds amazing and so well deserved you've had a lot thrown at you recently and have throughly earned a break.

WiddlinDiddlin · 16/11/2024 20:28

Gemini - that makes total sense to me, I see it all the time when talking to puppy owners at work... and its exactly as you say, the good times start to outweight the bad in frequency and um, goodness..and so in contrast the bad seems that much worse..

It is why I bash on and on about keeping diaries, because how it feels at the time may not be a true reflection of actual progress made.

sallydoodlecat · 16/11/2024 20:39

Oh the joy of seeing him run! Well done for everything you're doing with him.

I TOTALLY get this and I think it's happening a bit already. I said to DP tonight that his good day streak has reached four! So why on earth should I focus on the ONE nip I got in the paddock?

Funny @WiddlinDiddlin of all my misaligned expectations of having a juvenile doggo, cuddling wasn't one of them, yet Pod expects at least 30 mins of being "little spoon" each evening 🥹

OP posts:
WiddlinDiddlin · 16/11/2024 21:06

Haha.. yes whilst all the books say 'dogs don't really like physical contact/cuddles'... in fact many really do!

My Low Wheelbase fellow needs a good cuddle, front legs up round my shoulders my arms around him, then slide into a 'sort of on his back held like a baby' job... every day, and he knows I finish work at 10 and starts to get a bit of a pester on for it... He does a biiiiig sigh and flop, lets go alll his muscles completely and stays like that for ten to twenty minutes... Then he's good to sit next to us like a normal dog or lie on his own bed or whatever.

The pointy stick dog is less demonstrative but notably more of a pain in the arse if she hasn't had a sit in my lap for a bit. And the wobbly old fart doesn't care either way and hasn't for his whole nearly 16 years!

Even though all three are fine with fireworks, this time of year they do get much more cuddly (even the old fart wants to sit next to my DP more than normal, touching him in some way), so it obviously provides security and helps them relax.

GeminiGiggles · 16/11/2024 21:15

Haha my collie did "baby cuddles" too but only with my oh. He'd sit next to him, rear up and just flop like a trust fall. All the things he shouldn't like he did and all the stuff he should have been fine with he wasn't 🤣

I have just had the best time looking through his IG that's some speed he's got there even with wind resistant ears! My heart was bursting watching so can only imagine how yours felt!

Glad what I said made sense - I read it back two or three times and still wasn't sure 🤣

HangingOver · 17/11/2024 18:22

Pod has had a nice weekend. Our good (ish) behaviour streak continues. Except for the lunging at other dogs, leash pulling, digging, biting and barking. But other than that he's a delight.

I've just offloaded the food I bought in error and loads of expensive animal dead body parts on a delighted woman from FB. The ONLY bloody thing he still likes is the ostrich bits. Everything else he has gone off, the ungrateful swine.

Pod had two naps today, amounting to nearly three hours, and two long walks. Training next week and paddock again next weekend. There are also local enclosed woodland walks which I'm so excited to take him too! Imagine him running around sniffing everything ☺️

Kangaroo pic attached.

Since I kicked out my h, my dog has slept on the bed with me. My only complaint is she doesn't always sleep right next to me so that I can feel her. She's currently asleep next to me on the sofa though.

OldSpeclkledHen · 17/11/2024 18:33

Brilliant news, well done for Hanging In there 🙂
Dog parenting is tough, only time will help your boy (as you've seen - could you imagine enforcing naps in the crate when he first arrived?)
It just takes time for them to feel secure, which it sounds like he is, so you're doing a great job.
Please keep updates coming - you guys are the only reason I come onto MN these days 😂

HangingOver · 17/11/2024 19:44

Me and DP just had a funny chat about what Pods assesment of US would be after his first six weeks.

...house warm...nice...good snacks...no one fighting for food...they kiss my nose a lot etc etc

Purplecatshopaholic · 17/11/2024 20:17

Aw lovely pic, he’s soo adorable. Take it a day at a time, he’s getting there. It’s only been six weeks, he will settle properly in his own time.

HangingOver · 17/11/2024 20:20

He's just trodden on a poo in the garden and walked it through the house.

Oh feck - been there! Baby Pod does that sometimes - again, they seem to grow out of that lack of awareness as none of my older ones do it. But, for now…yuck!

WiddlinDiddlin · 17/11/2024 20:47

Oh no... Poo-Paw.

With three, we have to check ten paws and they all have ridiculously fluffy feet too so they can really mash it in there. It is rare, tends to happen if we have an unfortunate combination of someone forgot to poo pick AND we had a leapy-loopy moment, they don't step in it if just walking/trotting from a to b.

MaxandMoritz · 17/11/2024 21:06

Lovely photo. He looks much more relaxed.

My hound lunged and barked at other dogs too. Still does sometimes but as I've no doubt said before I walk her in quiet residential areas rather than in the park which is right opposite the house.🙄
She's a very greedy girl so a piece of her normal kibble if we saw a dog in the distance distracted her before she got in a state, kept her attention on me (with a bit of luck) and in theory at least made a good association with other dogs. It helped a lot.
Of course she's a chancer so when we see a dog across the street she still looks to me for her 'treat', the piece of kibble. She's a cheap date in that respect at least.

My dog walker is stronger than me and he can easily cope if she does pull and lunge so she goes to the park with him. She has a few extra walks a week with him, which is good for her and gives me a break.

NotISaidTheCat · 18/11/2024 08:59

I've been lurking on your threads and enjoying them hugely, Hanging. Pod is gorgeous! We adopted a 'Village Dog' from Portugal 7 years ago, and the things you're coping with are very reminiscent of what we went through with our (also gorgeous!) bonkers boy.

Village Dogs are a primitive breed, and I suspect Pods might be too? That means they're not biddable and can be quite independent. They're like giant cats in dog's bodies, lol. On some things, such as our boy's prey drive, I've just accepted that no amount of training is going to magically transform him, so I just make sure that he's never off lead unless it's in a secure fenced-in area. But he's a wonderful companion and has calmed down a LOT since we first got him.

The main thing I'd say is to remember that Pod is still a puppy despite his size. We adopted Bonkers Boy when he was around a year old (he was abandoned by his previous owners and then ended up in a shelter) and it definitely took a while for him to mature and feel settled. I'd actually forgotten how hyper and barky he was when we first got him until reading through your thread. Now he hardly ever barks and in general is quite a placid dog -- aside from his walks, he lives most of his life happily sprawled out asleep on the sofa. Do take heart; this too shall pass! I guarantee that a lot of it is just Pod's age and all the change he's gone through.

Btw, in terms of the treats, you probably gave him too much of a bounty of riches to start with (understandable!), so that things started to lose their value to him. We did the same thing with the same result. Bonkers Boy only gets a single dried rabbit's ear a day for a treat now, and I think it's probably his favourite time of day aside from his walks.😂

Hang in there, you're doing a great job.

HangingOver · 18/11/2024 15:16

Pupdate. Me and Pod went in the car on our own for the first time!! He was so good. I put his little seatbelt on and gave him some window to stick his nose out of and took him into town. We had a mooch around the harbour and his sniffys went into overdrive.

I'm so happy because it means I can take him to the secure field whether DP is around or not. So he can get loads of tearing around done while DP is still at work.

Hurrah for Pod!

Lovely update and yet another lovely pic of the gorgeous Pod.

WiddlinDiddlin · 18/11/2024 15:51

Is it possible that you can sit in the car with him and just read/give him a chew/licki thing sometimes, perhaps drive around the block and then back indoors sometimes (not loads as theres a risk this will be frustrating)...

My concern is that he figures out going in the car = always somewhere exciting and starts to get uncontainably silly as a result and once they DO its really hard to fix as its nigh on impossible to stop the car the second he does it, so the level of self reinforcement, ie 'i go crazy = car takes me somewhere great/contines to move' is really high then.

But otherwise, well done Pod, woohoo, his little world is getting bigger, and more sniffies is awesome for Podfaces!

MaxandMoritz · 18/11/2024 15:55

WiddlinDiddlin as always speaks a lot of sense.

However, it's really encouraging that Pod was so good in the car. And i really do think there's less tension in his body😍

spiderlight · 18/11/2024 16:36
