What are you buying your dog for Christmas?

I'm really struggling with present ideas for my dog this year.

She's on a restricted diet so I can't really get treats beyond what she usually has - I'll wrap up several packets of her usual treats so she has something to open though.

She doesn't really play much with toys and is terrified of squeakers in toys - I might get her a couple of teddies from the charity shop, even though she probably won't even look at them.

She's got loads of beds all over the house so doesn't need one of them.

She won't wear clothes 😭

I bought her a snuggle heat pad last Christmas which she loves.
I also got some gloves for wiping her down with which I wrapped up last year too.
I bought her a new lead and collar set for her gotcha day this year.
I also bought her several new bowls over the course of this year (all of which she hates!).

I'm going to order to fancy poo bags off Ebay.
But I can't think of what else to get for her. What are you getting for your dog?

Nothing. She’s a dog. She won’t know. I prefer to spend my money on good food, natural treats and toys and training that benefit her long term but everyone is different.

Guiltyfeethavegotnorhythm0 · 01/11/2023 13:00

Take her on her favourite walk on xmas day (make time ) she will love you for it .

Highlyflavouredgravy · 01/11/2023 13:01

It's a dog.
Why are you 'struggling for ideas'?
This is yhe 2nd thread like this I have seen. The other was about a cat.

Use the money you would have spent to donate to a charity that helps actual children who understand what Christmas is.

hattie43 · 01/11/2023 13:13

Both mine will have stockings and a full dog roast Christmas dinner . They are pretty spoilt anyway tbh .

IceIceBabyBump · 01/11/2023 13:15

She'll definitely be having a roast dinner - well as much of it as she's allowed because of her stomach issues.

And she'll be out for her favourite walk on Christmas day too.

She's absolutely spoiled rotten 😅

My pooch will be getting a new personalised towel (she needs a new one anyway), a squeaky toy and some foodie treats.

I will also make a donation on her behalf to Battersea or the Dogs Trust or a local animal shelter. I do this at Christmas and on her birthday as my heart breaks for all of the other animals who are not as loved as she is :(

HoHoHoliday · 01/11/2023 13:23

Mine has a stocking and is getting:
Fleece pyjamas
A squeaky plushy toy
A ball
Tin of sardines
Mini babybels
Some other pack of dog treats

IceIceBabyBump · 01/11/2023 13:23

A personalised towel is a great idea, thank you. Where do you get yours from?

I should've said that we always do a big Amazon 'Wish List' shop on her behalf for our local animal home, which is where we adopted her from. I also do their monthly lottery in her name too.

IceIceBabyBump · 01/11/2023 13:25

That's a lovely list @HoHoHoliday
The sardines made me laugh!

I would love to get her some fleece PJs but she won't wear clothes of any kind. I think she'd be so happy and warm if she would but she just won't countenance the idea.

OP posts:
HoHoHoliday · 01/11/2023 13:43

A lot of dogs don't need to wear clothing for warmth, their fur keeps them toasty and they overheat in clothes. Perhaps yours is warmer than you think? Mine is a baldy greyhound so he needs the extra layer! 😂

caringcarer · 01/11/2023 13:43

My 2 dogs will get a Xmas dinner with turkey, pig in blanket, mashed potatoes and gravy and they'll love it. Xmas poo bags, a few denti sticks and Xmas twist treats. Maybe some biscuit bones to share. Cats will get salmon treats, mouse cat nip toys, a new cat tree because the old one is rickety now.

caringcarer · 01/11/2023 13:44

I donate to the Cats Protection League every month but always make a one off larger donation at Xmas.

IceIceBabyBump · 01/11/2023 13:48

@HoHoHoliday She's always bloody shivering. She's happy with her snuggle heat pad in bed but that's not mobile - she would really benefit from a little jumper to keep her warms when she's bimbling around but she absolutely won't do it.

wetotter · 01/11/2023 13:49

I got her a bottle of "pawsecco" last year - she didn't like it

She might get a new toy, or perhaps <whispers> nothing at all

(All she got for her birthday was her 6mthly worming pill)

She's very a very good girl though, and gets the family a present of a new board game

BarbDwyerHair · 01/11/2023 13:51

I think you should wrap up an empty box and let her rip it apart. Maybe wrap up treats and put in box. Donate to a charity in her name or buy her a goat from Oxfam.

MotherofWhippets81 · 01/11/2023 13:52

Last year I made 'sensory' boxes for my two - save your Amazon packaging and then hide natural treats and toys inside and let them tear all the paper off etc. it kept them busy whilst DS opened his presents.

I get it OP - but then again I threw a dog birthday bbq this year. It's not Top Trumps - I still feed them the best food I can and donate to charity as well as buying them Birthday and Christmas presents - they're part of the family.

slow feeder / puzzle feeder / kong etc?
bubble blower and scented bubbles?
fancy dog soap / deodorant?
personalised bag for days out / overnight trips?

IceIceBabyBump · 01/11/2023 14:01

@MotherofWhippets81 She's so bloody spoiled that the sensory boxes you talk about - yeah, she has them every single night just after tea 🤗Basically ham wrapped up in different types of paper, put into different types of boxes and hidden around the house for her to find and open. FML.

He has a little stocking with his favourite treats in, a new Kong plush toy to replace the one he's destroyed through the year
A shiny LED flashing ball
Boxes and wrapping paper to play with
He's a Westie so never feels cold!

I might try a slow feeder, thank you. I don't expect she'll like it much - we've had epic battles with bowls.

And a bubble blower is a great idea, thank you. She's a weird soul so she'll either be terrified of it or she'll be insane and zooms over it. There is nothing in between 😂

Mine get a Christmas dinner (the kids insist) and usually a small treat wrapped up (again... the kids insist on doing this). I wouldn't get them anything personally, they're dogs, and they do not understand at all, I only go along with it as the kids don't want them to be left out and enjoy choosing them a treat from the pet shop, to them they're like their additional siblings, and they enjoy wrapping up shite for anyone they can. X

CobwebsAndCauldrons · 01/11/2023 14:12

A massive ostrich bone - as usual.

He gets one every few months anyway but might as well have the next one wrapped under the tree Grin

margotrose · 01/11/2023 14:13

Mine gets Christmas dinner and a box of natural chews every year.

Spermscarecrow · 01/11/2023 14:14

Anything she wants , I cannot resist her hazel eyes . There is so much gorgeous doggy stuff around at the moment I'll just get all of it , Oh and she's having her usual Christmas dinner and her Christmas hat 🥰

SirenSays · 01/11/2023 14:24

On my list is
New fluffy blanket.
A hoodie for in the house.
A light up collar
Treat dispensing toys
Squeaky soft toys
A restock of their treat jars

If anyone has recommendations for XL igloo beds or matching set leather collars and harnesses that are strong, sturdy and have lots of soft padding please please let me know.
