What are you buying your dog for Christmas?

I'm really struggling with present ideas for my dog this year.

She's on a restricted diet so I can't really get treats beyond what she usually has - I'll wrap up several packets of her usual treats so she has something to open though.

She doesn't really play much with toys and is terrified of squeakers in toys - I might get her a couple of teddies from the charity shop, even though she probably won't even look at them.

She's got loads of beds all over the house so doesn't need one of them.

She won't wear clothes 😭

I bought her a snuggle heat pad last Christmas which she loves.
I also got some gloves for wiping her down with which I wrapped up last year too.
I bought her a new lead and collar set for her gotcha day this year.
I also bought her several new bowls over the course of this year (all of which she hates!).

I'm going to order to fancy poo bags off Ebay.
But I can't think of what else to get for her. What are you getting for your dog?

Why would it be . Nothing like buying a gift for our fur babies.
Here is my girl at her birthday party a little while ago with her friends

I have so many questions... 😀

Is your girl the one with the pink hat? And is she a Boerbul Mastiff?

The two Collies, are they siblings/ related or just good looking friends?

How long did they keep those hats on?

How did you get them all to pose? I cannot get just my two photographed together.

And what is in the gift bags?

Do they each have a party, is this a regular thing?

I told you there were a lot. I have never been to, heard of, or seen a dogs party before.

Seeing this is making me feel even worse that I forgot BOTH my dogs birthdays this year.....

Mine like antlers to chew. They last ages. As for not knowing, a dog I used to have would get his presents from under the Xmas tree and open them even if they weren't noticeable dog smelling eg. A very soft wool poncho. He liked having the family all there, the food, the excitement of present opening, all any of us non religious type humans get from Xmas anyway.

CrushingOnRubies · 02/11/2023 14:15

Thinking of getting ddog a Pit Pat tracker thing. And by Christmas she will also be old enough to have an antler chew which I think she will love

Guiltyfeethavegotnorhythm0 · 02/11/2023 14:24

Oh dogs do know Christmas , this year is my new pups first christmas but after having many dogs , they do know . They recognise the decs coming out ( wears tinsel that evening ) .Explore presents under tree and has a rummage . Loves watching family open prezzies and then open theirs . Dogs do know after a couple of years . Mine also enjoy a fish cake with a candle for their birthday 🐶.

Thank god, someone talking sense. I'm actually in shock. Keep thinking this whole thread must be a spoof. I love dogs. Grew up with dogs, though don't have one at the moment. They had a lead till it wore out, a basket, till it wore out, the odd ball - otherwise played with sticks. They did not wear clothes. They were completely happy, normal dogs & we loved them. The environment is in crisis - why buy more completely unnecessary tat that will end up in landfill, probably shedding mocroplastics along the way? So many dogs in rescues, never mind all the families in poverty.

If you love dogs, you would know that sticks are incredibly dangerous and that dogs should never be encouraged to play with them. They can cause permanent damage to eyes, mouths and internal organs.

You'd also know that many breeds of dog struggle in the cold and need coats or jumpers to feel comfortable in the colder months (greyhounds, whippets, Chihuahuas). You'd also know that many elderly or arthritic dogs (of all breeds) benefit from a warm layer to help their joints and to prevent them from seizing up after sleep.

As for dogs being in rescues - that has nothing to do with people choosing to buy their dogs a few presents once a year.

BeansOnToast32 · 02/11/2023 15:34

People getting worked up about a few people choosing to spend their wages on their dogs! 😂

I don't have kids and won't be having any therefore I won't be sending all of their years and years worth of toys, tat and clothes to landfill so I think I can live with the fact that a few of my dog toys will eventually pollute the earth.

I don't smoke, drink or do drugs so if spending my money on my dog at Christmas and seeing her reaction to receiving a new toy or two (full body wag and dancing about) makes me happy, so what. We aren't hurting anybody.

I wouldn't tell you not to bother buying your kids Christmas gifts because there's plenty of kids in care or living in poverty that need stuff more. It's none of my business who you buy stuff for or what you spend your wages on, I couldn't care less.

As for clothes, some dogs don't like being cold or wet. If it was up to mine she'd never leave the house in the cold or rain and would hold her wee all day if I let her, so when it rains she will tolerate a short walk if she's wearing a coat but if it's really pouring down she point blank refuses any walk and will stand like a statue refusing to move.

She likes to sleep under blankets or will paw my dressing gown to climb inside if I'm wearing one so I know she doesn't like being cold.

You do you, and I'll do me. 👍🏻

Do they each have there were but I'll start at the top. Yes holly is a bullmastiff.
The collies and mother and son
They hat the hats on for about 10 mins whilst the photographer got them all looking the same way at the camera.
On the table is the birthday cake . Liver and cream cheese. Cost a fortune but she is worth it
Yes she has a party every year it started as a joke when my 2 legged adult kids thought she was better treated then them.
In the bags are home made doggy biscuits. A large chew , a cuddly toy and bandana for the dogs to take home. Xxx

Well everybody knows that the dogs don't know it's Christmas, obviously. People buy their dogs gifts because it makes them and their families happy - that's not a terrible thing. It would, I agree, be obscene if they were spending thousands of pounds on this stuff while children starved. But I don't think anyone is suggesting that.

I have got the dog some paw balm, a glow in the dark collar, and these two button things you can apparently teach the dog to press that I don't really understand the point of..... All in this has cost me a fiver I think. We aren't rich but we can afford this, while also making charitable donations etc. My daughter and I will enjoy seeing my husband's face when he opens these on behalf of the dog on Christmas morning......

Beargrumps22 · 02/11/2023 16:49

I think it is sad to have such a snotty attitude even my mum when i was a kid who wasnt really a dog person but loved our family dog used to wrap up a tin of treats for her.
Anyway onto happeir things I am delighted to say we are away for Christmas going to our favourite place Borth but will take a few little gifts for Christmas day probably some nice home made treats from Etsy as working i dont have time to make my own at the moment some are quite reasonable on there and they do treat boxes usually with a ball etc.
my one rescue Patch loves squeaky toys well demolishing them so he will have a few toys but they wont last!
I keep telling them its a walk on the beach on Christmas day which will be a lovely treat for them!
A local rescue is doing a meet Santa plus a professional photo of them with him i dont think Patch would be ok with that and my other one Moo may not be either but if ok and there is one near you would be a nice day out plus money goes to help all the animals

My dog definitely gets excited when he realises there's a parcel for him to tear open and investigate. His bum wiggles and his tail wags and you can just see the excitement and the joy.

I'm glad I'm not as miserable as some of the people on here Grin

VeridicalVagabond · 02/11/2023 17:06

My three get a big box of squeaky toys all individually wrapped that they take great pleasure in tearing the paper off and squabbling over all day.

The elderly greyhound will be getting a Christmas jumper as he's the only one who wears clothes. My mam knits him a new one every year, and this year my daughter has made him a snood out of all of the most hideous yarn she could find. It's truly revolting. He'll love it.

The younger two will have little Christmas dinner plates and homemade doggy friendly Christmas puds, the old boy has a bit of a delicate tum these days but will still get some chicken and a smidge of gravy (yes we make low salt gravy especially for the dogs before anyone starts 🤣)

It's a special day for us, why shouldn't it be for them too? They're part of the family after all.

HoHoHoliday · 02/11/2023 19:11

There are some real Scrooges on this thread. If you're not buying your dog a Christmas present you can just skip off to another thread, there's no need to comment.
My money is my own to spend on whatever I want. Perhaps I give plenty to charity, perhaps nothing, that's no one else's business but my own. I enjoy buying things for my dog, it makes me happy and makes him happy.

bengalcat · 02/11/2023 19:15

A lamb shank from the butcher

Darklane · 02/11/2023 20:19

Why do some people like to criticise others who like to make the day a bit special for their dogs as well as the other members of the family, or if their dogs are their only family? Doesn’t mean they aren’t kind animal lovers who also give to shelters or other pet charities, more likely to be the sort of people who do if you ask me.

My bunch will get things they enjoy, especially soft toys, the youngest loves to dive head first into the toy box & pull out her favourites. Nice things to eat, including carrot sticks when dinner is being prepared, as soon as they hear the chopping they’re there! & I’ve knitted new jumpers for the little ones who feel the cold, a new fleece throw to snuggle into on my bed & a new waterproof coat for the youngest who still hasn’t one….she hates the rain.

myopinionmatters · 02/11/2023 20:27

Some free lamb bones from the butcher's
That's the best present in her eyes if only kids were the same lol

SummerDawn2000 · 28/11/2023 18:40

@IceIceBabyBump
I need to see a picture of her. She sounds so lovely.

Hmae2016 · 24/12/2024 17:23

I do not no what else to get my dog except an ID tag and toys

Nothing. She’s a dog. She won’t know. I prefer to spend my money on good food, natural treats and toys and training that benefit her long term but everyone is different.

100%.
Never bought anything for Xmas or birthday. its a dog 😂

StarkRealism · 25/12/2024 13:00

My dog has training, good food, good treats and toys throughout the year and at Christmas he gets a little bit more. But everyone is different.

Highlyflavouredgravy · 01/11/2023 13:01

It's a dog.
Why are you 'struggling for ideas'?
This is yhe 2nd thread like this I have seen. The other was about a cat.

Use the money you would have spent to donate to a charity that helps actual children who understand what Christmas is.

What a wank post. To help children? What the fuck has that got to do with this thread. This board is the doghouse ffs. God there are some miserable fuckers about!

mondaytosunday · 25/12/2024 13:48

She got our footie team sweater! On sale at £10 and looks great on her. She's actually been wearing it for a month.

Chicheguevara · 25/12/2024 14:14

Mine got Colin the Caterpillar toys. They are over 2 feet long and the hounds love them.

BiteyShark · 25/12/2024 14:54

Mine got an advent calendar from the dog walker plus some treats which has gone down well.

He also had turkey which he loved and will get some over the next few days. Wasn't going to bother with a turkey this year but felt sorry for the dog 😁
