Do you let your dog sleep in your bed?

We haven't had our pup long, only 2 weeks, but I was just curious how many people actually allow their dog to sleep on the bed? Ours doesn't sleep on the bed but does sleep in our room. People say to me all the time "oh I know it's unhygienic but I let the dog sleep on the bed", which tells me they know it's frowned upon but do it anyway because they love their pups. So I was just wondering, do you let your pup sleep on the bed?

No way, there has to be some space free of pug fluff. I’m such a light sleeper and I can’t cope with the dead weight and all his farting 😆

We inherited a dog from a relative who passed away, she'd always slept in a bed with previous owner, so she now snuggles in bed with us. She's a pain sometimes, but she's comfortable and settled here and that brings us comfort in the circumstances, and she's an older dog too so it's not forever.

We'd prefer she slept in her own bed, but it is what it is! 😂

He’s a big stinky lab so he only sleeps in my bed when I’m a bit drunk and I give in! Then I regret it at 5am when he starts licking himself. He’s a bit of a drooler too so I wake up with lovely patches of drool on my bed! I’m a bit of a light sleeper too.

However I do think it’s a lovely thing to have dogs in the bed. They are with us for such a short time. I can imagine I’ll relax a bit more when he’s older and he’ll be in with us (despite the licking and drooling)..

Dogs however need to know who is in charge. They are not our equals. If they think they can do what they like then you get problem behaviours.

Oh, he's under no illusions, not am I. But he's been here 12 years and I don't see any problem behaviours. Nor does his walker, vet, occasional holiday home, etc. We're all good

BlastedPimples · 13/07/2023 23:17

@Grimchmas because you've taught him. But I'll let you have the last word.

@Grimchmas it's not about a sense of superiority at all. You've complete misunderstood.

Dogs are quite dirty animals. Don't want them in my bed at all.

Dominance theory , which is what you are alluding to has been totally debunked . My dog knows full well that he is a dog and is very well behaved despite sleeping just wherever he wants .

After 5 years I let our dog sleep on the bed for the first time last night (rest of the family are away). When I told him he could get on the bed he jumped straight onto my pillow & made himself comfortable. We argued a little about it & he finally agreed the foot of the bed was more appropriate.

I don't think I'll repeat it tonight, too disruptive with scratching & moving round!

ZforZebra · 14/07/2023 06:58

No, he’s not allowed upstairs or on the sofa either.

ScoobyDoesnt · 14/07/2023 07:04

My sprocker has always slept downstairs in the kitchen from being a puppy, but she is allowed upstairs and will often be found asleep on someone’s bed during the day if we’re in.

Have literally just got a new springer puppy, who is also in the kitchen and in a crate. Although at 5am this morning for the second morning running it wears tempting to take them both upstairs to see if I could get more sleep!

Older one is sometimes ‘allowed’ on the bed with me on a weekend for a lie in! I’m sure puppy will be too once she’s not seeing and pooing everywhere.

Where do you do cuddles?

ZforZebra · 14/07/2023 19:41

On the carpet, outside on garden furniture (we live somewhere warm year round), his sleep mat etc. Love him but can’t handle a bed or sofa that smells of him 😅

ilovesushi · 15/07/2023 10:32

Ours puts herself to bed on the sofa downstairs but at first light tiptoes upstairs and slithers silently onto the foot of the bed by my feet. I love having her there, but DH not so keen. He doesn't mind mornings only so I guess we all have a happy compromise.

My old dog used to sleep in bed but he was a lazy shit and I would have to pick him up to put him on the bed. He would then bury himself right under the duvet and sleep next to me. I loved his stubborn little arse. He was PTS 9 years ago and I still miss him.

It worked well for us because he had some allergies that would set off his stomach and skin. Took us a while to work what they were. He was a rescue. I remember vividly having to sleep outside with him once because his stomach was so upset he kept pacing up and down and being sick. He seemed to need the cool so I set up a lawn chair and dozed outside whilst he paced about. When it started to rain, I moved indoors and slept downstairs with him. My parents thought it was I mad but it was either that or he was vomiting and diarrhoea all over the house which would have gotten me in trouble. It was set off by a worming tablet. Never used that type again.

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 16/07/2023 07:55

She does sleep in our bed but she's a rescue and we knew that she was used to sleeping with her last owner, it was part of the deal with the rehoming charity.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 18/07/2023 12:34

DDog - yes but she sleeps like a brick so she doesn’t move while I fidget around. DPup, too small and chewy to leave free at night, when it’s safe to leave her roam she can if she wants but if she turns out to be a fidget she’ll be banished to the floor.

MXVIT · 19/07/2023 14:18

mine does, hes a short haired daxie so doesnt shed that much. I said i wouldn't, lasted 2 weeks - and now he has his own custom made ramp to get up and down

Wingingitbestican · 19/07/2023 15:16

We have got 2 very small dogs (3kg each ) and they sleep in our bed every night. Wouldn’t have it any other way 😊super king bed so lots of room

AnnieSnap · 19/07/2023 17:51

Our Toy Poodles sleep on our bed. We have a Weimaraner puppy (13 weeks old now). I was not going to allow her on the bed, but I did last night. It was her first unbroken night since we got her 5 weeks ago. It looks like that with be 3 dogs and 2 humans. Good job it’s a king sized.
