Do you let your dog sleep in your bed?

We haven't had our pup long, only 2 weeks, but I was just curious how many people actually allow their dog to sleep on the bed? Ours doesn't sleep on the bed but does sleep in our room. People say to me all the time "oh I know it's unhygienic but I let the dog sleep on the bed", which tells me they know it's frowned upon but do it anyway because they love their pups. So I was just wondering, do you let your pup sleep on the bed?

He can sleep where ever he likes, but he's an absolute hot potato, so his preference in the ensuite shower tray.

Sometimes he'll lie on the bed for a bit, but spends most of the night in the shower.

daffodilandtulip · 11/07/2023 22:59

Yeah ... she's a whippet 🤷🏼‍♀️

She does have her own mattress on the floor in my room though, and I'll turf her out if it's too hot or she's being a fidget - and she is good, she won't come back until I say (or until I breathe my first woken breathe, then she tries to eat me alive 🤣).

LaylaLjungberg · 11/07/2023 22:59

Yes. She even has steps to get up now she’s a bit wonky. I do have fleece blankets on top that are washed often as I don’t want any smells.

if I could go back I wouldn’t let her, she was perfectly happy downstairs on the sofa for months until one fateful night I brought her up for a cuddle.

neilyoungismyhero · 11/07/2023 22:59

Our puppies always slept in a crate next to me initially. Once they could be trusted not to play around they had a basket. Sometimes they sleep on the bed but mostly in their baskets.

No…

Ineedwinenow · 11/07/2023 23:02

Another absolutely not here too

We adopted our first dog 7 years ago and because they’re pack animals and don’t like to sleep alone we allowed her to sleep with us, and then when we adopted our 2nd dog 4 months ago we naturally allowed him to sleep in with us too so as to not change our first dogs routine.
had we of got them at the same time we probably would have made them both sleep in the utility room as it can get a bit squished and we’ll they’re dogs so they do smell. But hey ho they’re happy and that makes us happy.

Nope , I love her to bits but she is a dead weight and likes to lie on feet and legs it just gets too uncomfortable. Plus what about when me & Dh are having a bit of fun ? I don't want an audience

My (now sadly gone) dog, once started licking my face and wining at my DH when I was having a ‘special moment’ once. I think she thought I was dying 😳

ILoveMyCaravan · 11/07/2023 23:04

Absolutely, they both sleep in our bed. In fact they tell me when it's time to go upstairs!

cornflakesandtea · 11/07/2023 23:04

Looks like it's a bit of a 50/50 split! Our pup is in a crate in our room but she does come up for cuddles in the morning.

@Swirlingdiscontent fexofenadine? My DH is allergic to dogs. Our pup is meant to be hypoallergenic but he's had reactions to hypoallergenic dogs before and since taking the fexofenadine he hasn't reacted to her at all. You can get it much cheaper from Asda than the branded stuff.

Sadly yes. I wish he didn't

BigTedLittleTedCardboardBox · 11/07/2023 23:04

Yes, sometimes. She's happy to sleep downstairs but does love a night up with us, especially if it's cold, when she likes to be under the duvet.

I have my best sleep when she's in bed with me. Really restful. I wonder if it's because I know she's safe with me, but also makes me feel extra safe too. She's an excellent bed warmer on a cold night, and morning cuddles are lovely. It's symbiotic.

BanditsOnTheHorizon · 11/07/2023 23:06

We got a rescue dog, she was 16 weeks old. Had terrible separation anxiety so we crate trained her and put the crate in our bedroom (she would howl the place down if left downstairs. Once she was old enough we removed the crate and she sleeps on her bed on the floor. When my dh isn't in the bed she will creep up and sleep on the bed with me. When my dh is also in the bed, she sleeps on the floor

Noooo I'm a clean freak and the thought of his little bum and paws, that have been god knows where, rubbing on our fresh sheets that we sleep in all night makes me shudder. He has his own bed and we have ours!

Having a dog has done wonders for my clean freakery!

I would make sleeping elsewhere the norm for as long as possible if you only want it to be occasional at your choosing

Livelovebehappy · 11/07/2023 23:09

Those that have their dogs sleeping with them in bed every night, how do you navigate intimacy with your partner? Can’t imagine any of that can go on with a dog sharing your bed 😕

Hmmmbetterchangethis · 11/07/2023 23:12

@Swirlingdiscontent puppies shouldn’t be put in a crate to cry, the poor thing.

They should only be placed in the crate when nearly asleep, crate by your head, so went they creep out in the night (which they will, needing the toilet) they can be taken outside, then placed back when nearly asleep again.
Crate training comes in time, but it doesn’t sound like this mite stands a chance if you don’t want him and your DH isn’t prepared to sleep with him so he feels safe.

Kiwiandstrawberries · 11/07/2023 23:13

Absolutely yes . She starts the night on the top of duvet on her blanket and then burrows at about 2am under duvet..we then see her about 10am !

MenoRageisReal · 11/07/2023 23:17

@Swirlingdiscontent your posts are upsetting. That's not "crate training" it's so cruel to leave the pup alone like that and you are setting that poor puppy up for major anxiety and separation issues. It doesn't sound like your husband has done any research despite "wanting a puppy for ages" and needs to urgently address this and learn how to look after a puppy properly, quickly.

Don't have a dog (yet) but cats are on the bed x

I must admit it has made me adjust the ocd a little!

marshmallowfinder · 11/07/2023 23:49

No, I'd find it too irritating and hot. Not to mention dirty. Dogs in their own bed in the bedroom, on the floor.

AlwaysTheSupplierNeverTheBride · 11/07/2023 23:53

Mine is allowed to sleep wherever he likes, typically starts the night off in his own bed and creeps under the duvet in the small hours.

AlwaysTheSupplierNeverTheBride · 11/07/2023 23:55

PS at the first hint of any bedroom gymnastics he takes himself off under the bed, presumably with his paws over his ears!

Floralnomad · 11/07/2023 23:57

Our dog is on the bed until I go to sleep which is usually between 1-2 and then he gets off and goes on his own bed , his choice .
