Do you let your dog sleep in your bed?

We haven't had our pup long, only 2 weeks, but I was just curious how many people actually allow their dog to sleep on the bed? Ours doesn't sleep on the bed but does sleep in our room. People say to me all the time "oh I know it's unhygienic but I let the dog sleep on the bed", which tells me they know it's frowned upon but do it anyway because they love their pups. So I was just wondering, do you let your pup sleep on the bed?

My dog does, he’s an old Shih Tzu so I put him on & he stays in the same position all night!

It’s my privilege & duty to give him the best & happiest life, like he has done for us.

Chypre · 12/07/2023 00:01

They have hijacked one of the downstairs sofas and are completely uninterested in coming upstairs.

mondaytosunday · 12/07/2023 00:06

My dogs sleep with me now. But they were crate trained and were in the open plan kitchen/diner/livingroom as pups. Being on their own then and they grew up to have minimal issues when left alone during the day for a few hours, unlike my friend who had hers with her in her bedroom from the start plus during the day all the time and can't be left alone hardly at all now!

TheGreatWoofington · 12/07/2023 00:15

Yes. He just wants to be wherever I am. He’s a much better bed buddy than the cat! He snuggles up and isn’t any trouble, the cat on the other hand is an entirely different story. She thinks it’s great fun to sleep on my head and revels in kneading my hair and patting my face for attention in the wee small hours.

Yes, although he doesn't stay on all night unless it's really cold. He has a warm bed and a cool mat in our room and usually ends up on one of those.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 12/07/2023 00:22

Mine did for 12 years. Lost him a few weeks ago.

@Swirlingdiscontent puppies shouldn’t be put in a crate to cry, the poor thing.

They should only be placed in the crate when nearly asleep, crate by your head, so went they creep out in the night (which they will, needing the toilet) they can be taken outside, then placed back when nearly asleep again.
Crate training comes in time, but it doesn’t sound like this mite stands a chance if you don’t want him and your DH isn’t prepared to sleep with him so he feels safe.

Yes please show your DP this thread. Pup needs a more suitable home :(

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 12/07/2023 08:08

Yeah, ours has slept in our bed since the day we brought him home.

He's never had a single accident overnight and happily sleeps until we get up in the mornings.

DustyLee123 · 12/07/2023 08:09

Yes. My dog is bathed every week though, so she doesn’t smell.

Those that have their dogs sleeping with them in bed every night, how do you navigate intimacy with your partner? Can’t imagine any of that can go on with a dog sharing your bed 😕

Dog gets sent downstairs or out on the landing.

Tiredmummaoftwo · 12/07/2023 08:18

Nope and mine don't come upstairs. They have eachother for company at night though. Might be a different story if I only had one.

I have a staffy...we sleep in 'her bed' lol

Same here :)

Looks like it's a bit of a 50/50 split! Our pup is in a crate in our room but she does come up for cuddles in the morning.

@Swirlingdiscontent fexofenadine? My DH is allergic to dogs. Our pup is meant to be hypoallergenic but he's had reactions to hypoallergenic dogs before and since taking the fexofenadine he hasn't reacted to her at all. You can get it much cheaper from Asda than the branded stuff.

This does mean you basically committing to taking Fexofenadine daily for the rest of the dog's life. I wonder if there are health implications. I take Loratadine for hayfever daily for 3 months in the summer and I'm sure it's not good for me but I can't avoid the summer. I'm allergic to cats and really wouldn't get a cat and certainly wouldn't want to have to take stronger antihistamines every day year round for a decade or more. Fexofenadine is stronger than Loratadine. Just think about this. Kind of wondering if this puppy is going to work out in your home.

We don't really have sex at bedtime, child free home so we just do it when the mood takes us. But when we occasionally do do it at bedtime we just send her out of the room. She does not like it!

I'm so sorry

RedLem0nade · 12/07/2023 08:47

He can if he wants too- end of the bed. He’ll sometimes sleep downstairs, sometimes in the dog bed at the foot of our bed, sometimes end of our bed. If I have to go off to tend to one of the DC at night he’ll occasionally sneak in to my vacated warm spot!

He’s small and doesn’t smell though so I’m ok with it. Plus he’s so lovely😊

IngGenius · 12/07/2023 09:00

Nope. Never in a milllion years will I have my dogs sleeping on my bed or in my bedroom.

I love the "but they are family " so is my teenage son but he does not sleep in my room!

They do get dirty unless you wash them everyday which is no going to happen Mine are in the rivers, herding the stock, they do pick up ticks even if treated, they may at times have to be on their own so no point in making them dependent on having to sleep with me. They have their fantastic comfy beds downstairs in the dog room and are as happy as can be.

I love my beautiful clean luxurious dog free bedroom.

Same here :)

And here. Our Staffie loves to be under the duvet snuggled against me, even in a heatwave. Plus I have one of our two cats on the other side of me. They certainly keep me warm!
Ddog hogs more than her fair share of the bed and the duvet.

fireflyloo · 12/07/2023 09:41

Yes my dog sleeps on the bed (not in). He was in his crate for the first year until he was fully house trained and could be trusted. I love having him in the room with me. We all sleep much better. He can be a lazy sod so on weekends will sleep until we get up.

Unluckycat1 · 12/07/2023 13:09

She's 7 months and can choose where to sleep out of the living room, kitchen, hallway and my room. She used to sleep 99% of the time on my bed but now never starts the night there and is only there when I wake up maybe a third of the time. I think it's too hot for her atm plus she has long legs that she likes to stretch out.

Rainbowstripes · 12/07/2023 14:20

My rescue slept in a crate the first year I had him - now he's older, more trustworthy and far less destructive the rules have relaxed and he does often sleep on the bed but if I ask him to get off for whatever reason he'll sleep on his dog bed on the floor quite happily.

cornflakesandtea · 12/07/2023 18:00

@Netcam no need to worry, we will be weaning him off them after a short while. He keeps forgetting to take them and doesn't react badly to her at all, just a few sneezes, so we're hopeful he will adjust. If not, DH will go, not pup!

Zippedydodah · 12/07/2023 18:27

Mine sleeps on my bed if DH is away, otherwise she sleeps on top of him, daft pooch. She has choices of 4 chairs, 1 sofa, the living room, hall or landing plus 2 dog beds 🙄, not spoiled at all obviously!

bozzabollix · 12/07/2023 18:34

If my husband is on call at night yes, but on top of the duvet. When he’s back they sleep on their own beds in our room.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 12/07/2023 18:51

Yes ours had a cuddle with DH while I brush my teeth etc (he’s a mummy’s boy so DH doesn’t get as many cuddles as me), then he lies in the middle of us taking up all the room between us as he likes to lie on his side with his supermodel legs stretched out, then he gets moved to the bottom of the bed when we go to sleep and sleeps with his head on my feet 🥰.
