Do you let your dog sleep in your bed?

We haven't had our pup long, only 2 weeks, but I was just curious how many people actually allow their dog to sleep on the bed? Ours doesn't sleep on the bed but does sleep in our room. People say to me all the time "oh I know it's unhygienic but I let the dog sleep on the bed", which tells me they know it's frowned upon but do it anyway because they love their pups. So I was just wondering, do you let your pup sleep on the bed?

Yes she sleeps in the bed, not in it. Loves going under the covers. She's a minature jack russell though so doesn't take much room up

Yes all 4 😬😬

Soubriquet · 12/07/2023 19:06

No but only because the cat sleeps with me instead.

I used to with previous dogs

Oceanus · 12/07/2023 19:08

Never, that is so disgusting...! Yuck yuck yuck! Or maybe I just won't admit to it here as I don't want to be judged because I do know it's wrong but I do it anyway. 😇

MiniTheMinx · 12/07/2023 19:21

OldEvilOwl gorgeous dog

useitorlose · 12/07/2023 19:27

No, but he's allowed on top of the covers on a weekend morning while we drink our tea.

usernother · 12/07/2023 19:27

Used to have a dog. Wasn't allowed upstairs never mind on the bed. But he did creep upstairs at night and sleep outside my door on the landing

Tinytigertail · 12/07/2023 19:31

No, DD is very cosy in her (open doored) crate downstairs overnight

BlastedPimples · 12/07/2023 19:32

No way.

Dogs like to roll in fox shit and even if you wash them there's still the residue.

Then there's ticks to worry about.

Plus it's better for dogs to stay 'below' humans. Know their place.

Grimchmas · 12/07/2023 19:38

Yes. He has his own bed in the top left hand corner of mine, but often sneaks under the duvet anyway.

I wasn't going to let him, but he just Did. Not. Settle at all in his crate for the first week. In the end I prioritised my sleep.

Why should he have to stay "below" me? I have a pet for the companionship, not because I want to feel superior to somebody 🙃 he's well enough trained out and about and a pleasant character to be around.

DDog is allowed on the spare bed, as that's behind my office desk and we don't get visitors since Covid.

She occasionally jumps on our bed (especially if she can open the sore after her morning walk if I'm still asleep - a rare but exciting thing!) but knows she's not allowed there.

Her bed for sleeping is in an actual dog bed which sits on the couch at bedtime and we close the doors so she stays downstairs. (The odd time dd leaves doors open, she lies outside our bedroom doors and barks, then quiets down , then barks again early am - so we aren't sure if she sleeps on the carpet at our door or if she goes to her daytime spot on the spare bed).

I dont, never have and I love them as much as I love my kids. I don’t let them sleep in my bed either though 😂 One of my dogs in particular suffers from separation anxiety and needs some level of boundary or it would get out of hand. They have their own room with big comfy dog beds. My anxious dog would most likely not sleep and just try to get closer and closer to me. It would be be good for anyone! Now we have a baby too so I’m really glad we didn’t start it.

I know someone who let their puppy sleep on the bed as soon as they got her and she fell off during the night, broke her leg and ended up needing months of rehab after surgery 😔 definitely better/safer not to I think, as tempting as it is

villainousbroodmare · 12/07/2023 19:58

Nope, not on furniture at all. I wouldn't get into bed with shoes on and wearing grubby clothes. Plus we all need our space. Very beloved dog though.

BlastedPimples · 12/07/2023 20:18

@Grimchmas it's not about a sense of superiority at all. You've complete misunderstood.

Dogs however need to know who is in charge. They are not our equals. If they think they can do what they like then you get problem behaviours.

Dogs are quite dirty animals. Don't want them in my bed at all.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 12/07/2023 20:21

Not my bed because he drives me mad but he sleeps with my DD and the 2 cats also. She says it makes her feel secure.

Therunecaster · 12/07/2023 20:25

Absolutely not....😂

I get confused sometimes but my dog sets me straight every time. 😁

tracylamont13 · 12/07/2023 20:39

No. We've got 4 dogs and they sleep in the kitchen diner.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 12/07/2023 22:32

The thought is disgusting. Hairs and oil from coat, bodily excretions, faecal matter, fleas, ticks, drool. Absolutely not. Even just the smell. Just no.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 12/07/2023 22:34

And god, the thought of them being there while you have sex!! Or if you put them out on the landing, the sound of them clawing at the door or whining is enough to put you off for life.

There is a line to be drawn with dog ownership I think. As others have said, they are not your equal. Yes, you are part of their pack, but you are their superior and they sleep where you tell them to sleep.

fitnessmummy · 12/07/2023 22:34

I wouldn't purely because when you need a dog sitter for a holiday etc the dog may not settle well at night which could make going away difficult

CurlyhairedAssassin · 12/07/2023 22:36

Also means you can't have kids in with you. Not great to have there when you are feeling ill and need peace and quiet to recover. A dog trying to hump the duvet and pestering to go out all the time.....

ginsparkles · 12/07/2023 22:37

No, she's downstairs. She sleep on the sofas down there.

tillyandmilly · 12/07/2023 22:42

Yes why not?
