I've found a puppy in a plastic bag

During a walk with my lab. It's looks like a poodle cross and go actually be in good condition.

I've called the vets and taking then in later. My next door neighbour has a microchip scanned and it's not chipped. No collar. Doesn't look to be in poor condition though.

Apart from the vets, what do I do?

I've fallen in love already!

Contact your local dog warden. Chances are they will let you keep it unless the owner comes forward. Don't put it on facebook, you could get some awful people claiming it's theirs. Watch out for missing/stolen dog notifications though. I think if its unclaimed after 28 days you can keep it.

comfyoldjeans · 13/04/2023 18:43

Finders keepers!

YunaBalloon · 13/04/2023 18:44

Please tell me you took pictures and kept the bag? You need to contact the police. This is animal abuse.

Love it, keep it, be happy.

This

Favouritefruits · 13/04/2023 18:48

If your dog will allow it let it snuggle up to him/her.

Shakirasma · 13/04/2023 18:48

Honestly you're all fucking mad.

Of course the OP cant just keep it and walk off into the sunset with her new found puppy!

An act of animal cruelty has been committed, a serious crime. She needs to call the police, or better still the RSPCA. This is one of the few types of cases they're actually interested in.

RicherThanYews · 13/04/2023 18:34

Pick a colour palette and I'll make your new baby a blanket. Congratulations. I'm serious, DM me.

I wouldn’t unless you know it’s genuine.

Messyhair321 · 13/04/2023 18:49

There may be more puppies I'd check, clearly has been dumped, it's happening more,& more recently

Well not everyone's 'fucking mad' considering so many posters have said the same as you, in a much more pleasant manner.

No way! Wow! Whatever shop the bag was from name it after it 😁
Lots of water and a warm quiet room perhaps

Little Poundland…. How sweet 💕

AgrathaChristie · 13/04/2023 18:52

what sort of bag? I’m just thinking of how you’d get a 4 month old pup into a bag. Was the bag tied? There are some sick people in this world. Offer the pup water, a tiny amount of food if it’s really hungry but not too much, can cause pain and vomiting. If you keep him/her feed little and often to start off and will probably need worming.

Findyourneutralspace · 13/04/2023 18:52

And yes, of course police and RSPCA

Tied to a post? How is that comparable to being stuffed into a plastic bag?

Abandoned maybe?

pilates · 13/04/2023 18:55

How upsetting 😢

I hope there is a happy ending.

Soapyspuds · 13/04/2023 18:56

Was it an American Pit Bull Carrier?

QueenofLouisiana · 13/04/2023 16:48

Well, I clearly have no moral compass. I’d already be buying a puppy bed and smart new collar.

Best of luck (with your new friend).

I think you have a very strong moral compass, @QueenofLouisiana! You would be giving a loving home to an animal that has been thrown away as if it’s rubbish - you wouldn’t be the one with no moral compass in that situation.

It would be different if the you had found a puppy or dog running loose, and were thinking of just keeping it and not trying to find the owner - but in this situation, you’d definitely be on the side of the angels, to take the puppy in.

birdywillow · 13/04/2023 19:01

How cruel some people or just vile poor pup.

I'd be keeping it, sometimes the Universe is trying to tell you something.
If that's not a possibility, the Doodle Trust are really good for support and finding the right home for any Poodle cross.

suzettenoisette · 13/04/2023 19:05

No one knows if the puppy has been thrown away or stolen. We also don't know anything about the plastic bag. Ever thought that there might have been food in it and that's why the puppy was found there? Looking for food after he got lost and maybe missing his siblings and family. It would be cruel to just keep it without trying to find it's home and I repeat myself but it would also be illegal.

Some of the advice here is so horrible, it's painful. Imagine your beloved pet would just be kept by someone?

Also letting it snuggle up to the lab is a bad idea. It could be sick.

The only right things to do are

a) Call the police

b) take it to a vet

c) keep it away from the existing dog as puppies can carry deadly diseases especially that could kill another pet

d) offer it a loving home if you want to AFTER it has been made sure he doesn't have one and a vet has had a look, which will take a few days/weeks

PalominoUK · 13/04/2023 19:10

Not all Doodle breeders are unethical, there are some who take great pride in breeding to better the resulting puppies, who socialise them, wean them on to quality food, and take the time and effort to raise their puppies in the family home.
Sadly, puppy owners just won't pay any more for a pup that's been raised that way, when they can find a puppy farm pup for less😕 little realising it may well cost them more in the long run.
Sorry to hijack the thread OP

WiddlinDiddlin · 13/04/2023 19:13

Legally...

You need to inform the dog warden and take 'reasonable steps' to find the legal owner.

You can let the dog do their 7 days in the pound and then claim them for yourself, at which point they are 100% legally, your dog.

Or you can keep them, having informed the DW and taking reasonable steps to find the owner and after 28 days the dog becomes sort of yours but this is open to legal challenge at any point. It means you can take care of them, do stuff like get them chipped, spayed etc, but should anyone challenge ownership you could lose the dog, after ANY length of time!

Doing nothing means you're potentially committing 'theft by finding', but also morally, this could easily be a stolen dog, dumped and there is a distraught owner somewhere, possibly the other side of the country.

PriamFarrl · 13/04/2023 19:14

I had a cat that kept coming to my door. He was in a real state, clearly stray and unloved. I tried for weeks to find his owner but no one was forthcoming. In the end a rescue came and got him. He had a chip but it was unregistered. He has been adopted by a very loving family. Turns out that he is a Maine coon, he has a deformed foot so my theory is that he was dumped in the park behind our house by a breeder.

Anyway, I would make efforts to find the owner before making any further choices.

EmotionalSupportHyena · 13/04/2023 19:28

I’m just posting in anticipation of a picture.

Hope the vet check goes well.

kagerou · 13/04/2023 19:32

I used to work in animal rescue and have come across lots of dumped animals. My guess is he was either dumped by a breeder because he's sick or one of their breeding dogs accidentally became pregnant by the 'wrong' breed resulting in an unpopular cross mix. Alternatively with that age he could have been dumped by someone who bought him without knowing how to care for / train a puppy who now just cba with him.

It is very very unlikely he got in that bag by innocent means or there is someone looking for him (stolen dogs are usually stolen 'to ordering are either sold on instantly, bred from, or used for dog fighting so I can't think of any circumstance where one would end up left in a bag)

If you do want to keep him go for it. But please be careful introducing him to your dog in case he was dumped due to illness. Ensure the vet fully checks him for transmissible illness , especially parvovirus and distemper which can be carried for a while before symptoms show and are truly horrible. Also have him check for things like heart issues that could have made him unsellable.

If at all possible I would also keep him separate from your dog for at least 2 weeks and make sure your dog is up to date on vaccines as false negative tests are common with distemper and parvo before symptoms show

With all that warning out of the way he was lucky to have been found by you and I hope it all goes well

shutthewindownow · 13/04/2023 19:40

The vet will advise you on what to do I'm sure. You either have to give it to rehoming kennels or keep him
