I've found a puppy in a plastic bag

During a walk with my lab. It's looks like a poodle cross and go actually be in good condition.

I've called the vets and taking then in later. My next door neighbour has a microchip scanned and it's not chipped. No collar. Doesn't look to be in poor condition though.

Apart from the vets, what do I do?

I've fallen in love already!

FAKE POST, EVERYONE.

oggie679 · 14/04/2023 20:24

Oh phew, from the heading I thought the poor thing was dead, thank god!

Mothership4two · 14/04/2023 21:31

I would be surprised if you could automatically keep it OP. We found a (probably) dumped dog and were told to take it to an authorised kennels to check for a chip (there wasn't one) and had to leave her there. She was later taken to the main kennels in a nearby city and rehomed quickly. We could have put in a request for her but we have a dog and a cat although we were sorely tempted. As the finder maybe you would be at the top of the list?

Would love an update!

FAKE POST, EVERYONE.

How do you know?

Whatafliberty · 14/04/2023 21:59

Dog warden check and then keep him xx

Bugbabe1970 · 14/04/2023 22:01

TheFlis12345 · 13/04/2023 15:17

I would post about it on local Facebook pages giving a vague description including age and where it was found, but not post a photo. That was the emphasis would be on anyone claiming it to prove it is theirs and provide photos.

Why would you give a dog back to someone who left it in a plastic bag to die?

threatmatrix · 14/04/2023 23:02

The puppy found you, it’s yours give him a lovely home.

H007 · 14/04/2023 23:20

Report it to the police, when I was a kid I found a puppy a little jack Russell. We looked after it for a couple of days. Turned out it had jumped out of a lorry window when parked and run off. It had only just been picked up by the driver and it was on the way to being taken home. I found it a couple of miles from where the lorry was stopped. He also eventually called the police too so they were able to reunit.

The police did tell us if no one came forward for him we would be able to give him a home if we wanted too.

Thanks for the time wasting wind up.

There are just so many wind up threads now. I have just posted on another thread and now I think about it I bet that is a wind up too.

MyNDfamily · 15/04/2023 00:18

The owner probably didn't put it in the bag. This happened to us, quite a few years ago now. Some kids, well teenagers took my dog from my front garden 1 year old Jack Russell cross, a neighbour found him in the park, about 2 minutes from my front door in a box. We think that's what happened anyway. The dog had come through the side gate from the back garden into a locked front garden. They had also thrown the dog into a pond according to a witness. There are some bloody evil people out there. I got the dog back thank god. Police couldn't do much.

DsMumL · 15/04/2023 00:49

Haven't read all the comments so probably been advised already but its a legality to inform your local dog warden

You can offer to take care of the dog whilst the owner is traced which is called a "retainer" - if they ring the local council pound to ask if its been found, you'll be informed. After 7 days you'd be able to keep it, as it would be put up for adoption if it was in the kennels (in my local area anyway, not sure if all councils are the same, but assume thats the legal time limits)

You wouldn’t. If someone dumped it they are hardly likely to go out of their way to claim it back are they 🙄 But if it was stolen this may help find the owner.

Ukrainebaby23 · 15/04/2023 03:45

I don't believe it's the law they have to go to a 'pound' not here in UK anyway. They must be reported as found to police and local warden and effort made to trace owner but can remain with finder as long as safe and cared for. Or that's my understanding if legislation here. Or you have something that says otherwise?

T1Dmama · 15/04/2023 03:56

Personally I’d keep it and just check Facebook for stolen dogs.
I wouldn’t tell bets it’s found as they’ll probably confiscate it and then who knows where it will go

WiddlinDiddlin · 15/04/2023 04:27

I really do hope this is a fake post, there is so much incorrect and shit advice being chucked around.

I've worked with dogs for over 20 years, in rescue, foster, training and behaviour, with dangerous dogs, seized dogs and advising courts - @Feraldogmum I am plenty grown up enough thanks and am fully aware of what goes on, and what doesn't. I am also up to date on current dog related law and am not discussing issues from a decade or more ago as if they're recent!

You do have to report to the dog warden that you have found a dog, or you're at risk of theft by finding and you're potentially preventing someone getting their dog back. If you opt to keep the dog you must take reasonable steps to locate the owner and the dog will never be unquestionably, legally, yours (unlike if the dog does 7 days in the pound and then you take them on.)

I hope you never experience losing a dog to theft or escape and the endless worry, until well after their natural life span must be over, about where they are and what happened.

It is likely that a dumped dog has been dumped by their legal owner but it is also very possible its been dumped by a thief, for myriad reasons.

UK Pounds are not euthanising dogs who are fit, healthy, happy and have homes asking to adopt them.

UK Police are NOT involved in stray dog cases unless there is a dangerous dog issue.

UK Vets are not confiscating dogs from anyone, they have no power to do so and frankly have better things to be doing with their time.

(what goes on in other countries I have no idea, it isn't relevant in any case).

As I say, I hope this is a fake post and I also hope fervently some posters here NEVER find someone elses straying, stolen, dumped dog and simply decide to keep it based on outdated ideas and misery-monger bullshit!

There are just so many wind up threads now. I have just posted on another thread and now I think about it I bet that is a wind up too.

It's very annoying and becoming far more frequent on MN. Goady post then either no follow up or a brief update basically saying nothing then poof!

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 15/04/2023 07:34

Mothership4two · 14/04/2023 21:32

How do you know?

Bullshit detector beeping in overdrive. It's pretty obvious when it's very far fetched in the first place, OP doesn't return, no photos are forthcoming...and so on.

Butterfingers1977 · 15/04/2023 09:23

@WiddlinDiddlin - one of the few people on here talking sense. Fake post or not , this is the best advice. I know that animals are a VERY emotive subject but also an awful lot of misinformation and downright immoral advise on here so I would second exactly what they are saying . Everyone needs to be a tiny bit more objective if this is , in fact , real . I mean objective , not dispassionate. ( Registered Vet Nurse here for 27 years for context) x

Kate0902900908 · 15/04/2023 09:41

In my opinion at 4 months old it’s most likely been dumped. Keep it & love it ♥️ By 4 months a Responsible owner would have chipped it, puppy is yours X

T1Dmama · 15/04/2023 13:08

Legally the breeder should’ve chipped the puppy, makes you wonder if breeder couldn’t find a home for this particular pup and dumped it. Poor puppy!
I Struggle to believe this is real too though. At 4 months old I doubt a puppy would stay in the bag!! If it was tied up and could still breath it would chew it’s way out surely.

Rosejasmine · 15/04/2023 13:14

I’m so glad you found him in time. Obviously either dumped by the owner or breeder, or maybe stolen from somebody and then dumped. I’d look at social media to see if any puppy thefts have been reported. If he’s not a stolen pet that belongs to somebody, then I would keep him. I wouldn’t post any photos on social media because you’ll get chancers and he might end up in the wrong hands or being sold on

Notsoivorytower · 15/04/2023 16:02

Oh my goodness! The poor pup! Some people are heartless monsters! I despair!!

I'm so glad that it was you that found him/her.

I'm desperate to see a pic.

If you've fallen in love I say please keep said pup if you can. You sound like a lovely caring and clearly a 'doggy person' so it was meant to be. It's destiny.

I have to say I am a tad jealous. If the same happened to me I'm not sure I could part with it... though my dog might not be too keen he would have to get used to it and make room.

The world works in mysterious ways ... please post a photo of your little furry friend!!

suzettenoisette · 15/04/2023 17:00

ChristineCricket · 14/04/2023 09:42

@suzettenoisette it was in a plastic bag though so would’ve died then who is the thief. One of my cats went missing a while back, if I found out he was alive and well in another home I would just be pleased.

Really? That's quite odd.

Maybe you didn't bond with your pets in the same way others do, but my dogs would actually suffer terribly if they were taken away from their home. So it wouldn't just be the owner who'd be upset, it would be traumatizing for many pets as well.

The puppy could have tried to find food in the plastic bag. In any case, it doesn't change the law. It's theft to keep an animal that's not yours without checking.

I would sue anyone who just kept my pet because I know exactly how much both my pets and I would suffer. They are a part of my family.

suzettenoisette · 15/04/2023 17:05

This! These people are so selfish and don't think about the dog and its feelings or owner's feelings at all. Dogs bond with their owners and miss them.

The whole "omg why doesn't this happen to me" - nonsense shows what kind of people they are. Not people who care about animals but people who want a free puppy, not caring about the puppy's needs but about themselves getting what they want. It disgusts me. It is not kindness towards and animal but cruelty to not look for its home first. Dogs bond with their owners and it's an incredibly strong bond. What an awful thing to do to an animal.

bpirockin · 15/04/2023 17:59

Oh my goodness, I'm always on the look-out for a bag of dumped puppies. Of course it would be hard not to keep them all which would be a nightmare, but it's a standing joke that on a day of little else to do I'll take a drive and see if I find any wriggling bags.

I do hope you can keep it! So many ruthless and cruel people out there, so I'm glad it was found before it suffocated, poor thing. Enjoy!
