I've found a puppy in a plastic bag

During a walk with my lab. It's looks like a poodle cross and go actually be in good condition.

I've called the vets and taking then in later. My next door neighbour has a microchip scanned and it's not chipped. No collar. Doesn't look to be in poor condition though.

Apart from the vets, what do I do?

I've fallen in love already!

You probably need to tell the police, just in case it's been stolen.

If it's not claimed, keep it if you'd like it - can't wait to see a photo

AgnesX · 13/04/2023 17:25

Sweet Jesus, what is it with the people that do these things.

I hope you're in the position to keep him/her.

Why would it have been stolen and then dumped? Honestly, what are the chances?

Newpeep · 13/04/2023 17:30

Finding law. You cannot just keep a dog you find, no matter how and where, chipped, unchipped etc.

I have heard that prolific dog thieves sometimes steal too many and then can't sell them on and would prefer to dump the dog rather than keep it until they can find a buyer

Switchwitch · 13/04/2023 17:35

I'd take to the vet. Might be it has a serious health issue and was too expensive to keep.

Newpeep · 13/04/2023 17:30

It's owner chucked it away. It's not a "lost" dog and op should certainly not make any attempt to reunite it with the scumbag who dumped it in a plastic bag.
Do you think this dickhead is likely to be out there searching for it? 😵‍💫

ToHellBackAndBeyond · 13/04/2023 17:38

Whoever asked about chipping law- they have to be chipped and registered by 8 weeks.
Poor puppy, thank goodness you found them!

I'd love to see a pic too but I think @ayal should wait until s/he knows the dogs statues , info on here can end up on FB / Daily Fail etc which could cause @ayal problems like false claims , pestering etc .

But once its all sorted I'm with you pics please

ScattyHattie · 13/04/2023 17:38

Poor puppy, so glad you found him in time. Pups are meant to be microchipped by breeder prior to sale now.

Should report any found dog to council dog Warden. You maybe able to keep at home rather than send to local pound but sure its something like 28days rather than 7 for owner to claim before lose ownership but you'd possibly be liable to pay any vets bills while in your care though 🤔 Discuss with warden if your interested in keeping.

Hellocatshome · 13/04/2023 17:40

I found a cat in a bag on a dog walk once. That wasn't microchipped either and 4 years later he still comes to bed with me every night. We did advertise it incase anyone had had it stolen and it was the theives rather than the owner who had dumped him but no one came forward so here he stayed.

You dont know it was the owner who chucked it out. It could have been stolen, it could be a vindictive abusive partner etc. The owner may be frantically looking for it.

Yes, that's true. Sorry.

I will say though I think cats are different to dogs as dogs are classed as property where as I dont think cats are hence why you don't have to tell anyone if you run over a cat (although you absolutely should!)

How the hell do you know that?

Next time I find a dog tied to post, probably by some well meaning passer by, I’ll remember to assume it’s been done by it’s owners and keep it. I’m sure the spaniel owners who were reunited with their much loved pet I found in this way a few years ago would be fine with that.

Because scumbags innit.

splilt · 13/04/2023 17:46

Oh poor puppy, I hope the vet check goes well

Clymene · 13/04/2023 17:50

Any decent owner would have had it chipped

Chips can malfunction.

SparklingChampagneAndStrawberries · 13/04/2023 17:56

Why on Earth would you give a dog back to someone who’s left it in a bag?? That’s neglect. It needs to be reported to the RSPCA or something for a loving family to adopt it.

LakieLady · 13/04/2023 17:56

Lucky puppy to be found by someone as nice as you, OP.

I'm afraid I'd keep him, but look out for reports of lost/missing puppies.

Chips can malfunction.

Chips can also move. Ddog is definitely chipped, in fact he is chipped twice, the vet now cant find either.

Any decent owner wouldn't leave it in a carrier bag.
