I've found a puppy in a plastic bag

During a walk with my lab. It's looks like a poodle cross and go actually be in good condition.

I've called the vets and taking then in later. My next door neighbour has a microchip scanned and it's not chipped. No collar. Doesn't look to be in poor condition though.

Apart from the vets, what do I do?

I've fallen in love already!

Hide THE thread - stupid phone

Crumbs, it really IS illegal to keep a dog you found - I had no idea. You have to surrender it, apparently (criminal offence not to??!!!!) - but can ask for it to be rehomed w you.

we found 6 kittens once…

splilt · 13/04/2023 18:07

@Newpeep

The dog was in a plastic bag, so yeah, scumbags.

WTF

HurryShadow · 13/04/2023 18:07

What absolute bastards for leaving it like that.

However. Congratulations on your new puppy!

Take it to the vets for a checkup - it might need some extra support if it's been taken away from mum too soon.

Well done for checking the bag.

How the hell do you know that?

Next time I find a dog tied to post, probably by some well meaning passer by, I’ll remember to assume it’s been done by it’s owners and keep it. I’m sure the spaniel owners who were reunited with their much loved pet I found in this way a few years ago would be fine with that.

Because scumbags innit.

Tied to a post? How is that comparable to being stuffed into a plastic bag?

Chips can also move. Ddog is definitely chipped, in fact he is chipped twice, the vet now cant find either.

Yes - my cat's chip has migrated to low down on her shoulder/ top of the leg. Fortunately it can still be picked up. When people check for a chip, they need to check all over - not just over the neck.

GoodChat · 13/04/2023 17:57

Any decent owner wouldn't leave it in a carrier bag.

But the owner and person who left it in a carrier bag may not be the same person…

ThisNameIsNotAvailable · 13/04/2023 18:11

Place-marking for photos even though people hate it.

GoodChat · 13/04/2023 18:12

@TwoCoffeesandAMilkshake no but if the dog is left in a carrier bag AND not chipped I wouldn't be hugely surprised if they were.

Maybe so, but we can’t jump to conclusions until all of the checks have been made.

doozledog · 13/04/2023 18:14

Its fate!

Winterisalmostover · 13/04/2023 18:17

Wish I'd found it. Sounds gorgeous

JulieHoney · 13/04/2023 18:18

We found a tiny kitten on a rubbish dump travellers left behind in a field. She lived to be 16 years old. Gorgeous girl.

SorePaw · 13/04/2023 18:20

ReadersD1gest · 13/04/2023 17:00

It's been discarded like a piece of rubbish. Why not keep it if you want to?

@ReadersD1gest because it may be stolen from loving owners?

perhaphs those that stole it were unable to sell it?

people who have come by it legally usually have more of a sense of right/wrong & would give it back to breeders or to a rescue, or (sadly) sell online (dreadful because it's most like to end up as bait).

InTropicalTrumpsLand · 13/04/2023 18:21

Unfortunately doodle breeders are unethical and will frequently dump puppies in shelters if they haven't found homes. In some rescues in the US, doodles are now the majority. It doesn't surprise me one would dump a puppy in a plastic bag.

If you choose to keep this puppy, please get on top of grooming. The mixture of a poodle coat with something else often leads to an unruly coat very prone to matting. A greyhound comb is brilliant - look up line brushing.

I would also take up a fantastic insurance - sometimes the breeds mixed don't quite fit together, and the parents are not health tested, which can lead to expensive vet visits.

All in all, I'm very glad you found the puppy (I understand my comment ended up quite negative, but that's because I dislike doodle breeders, not the mixes themselves)! I'll be eagerly awaiting updates.

Clymene · 13/04/2023 18:22

Yes, chips can malfunction and they can migrate. In a 4 month puppy that would be unusual.

SorePaw · 13/04/2023 18:22

ReadersD1gest · 13/04/2023 17:27

Why would it have been stolen and then dumped? Honestly, what are the chances?

@ReadersD1gest more likely than a non stolen puppy.

suzettenoisette · 13/04/2023 18:25

You can't just keep a pet you found. It's your obligation to look for the owner, otherwise it's theft. I'd be heartbroken if I had lost my puppy. Please think about the puppy who might miss his family and the family.

Yes, it's very well possible that it doesn't have a home and then you can keep it, but you need to find out. You can't just keep it.

It may have been too young to get chipped and might have escaped from a garden. Please look for his home, puppies bond with their owners quickly and he might be suffering and missing his family.

CC4712 · 13/04/2023 18:25

I'd keep it away from your lab incase it hasn't been vaccinated or has anything from a puppy farm- kennel cough, diarrhoea, respiratory issues etc which might be contagious.

suzettenoisette · 13/04/2023 18:29

Newpeep · 13/04/2023 17:30

Yes! I always get stressed out when people just want to keep puppies they find because I have dogs myself and they are so sensitive. They would suffer so much if someone just kept them if they got lost.

It's not kindness, it's extreme cruelty towards the dog and the people who miss him.

If he has no home it's great if it finds a new home with OP, but he needs to make sure.

suzettenoisette · 13/04/2023 18:31

ImAvingOops · 13/04/2023 16:19

I'd keep him. Agree about not putting details on Facebook etc.

The police needs to be called, anything else is theft.

ShowUs · 13/04/2023 18:33

Sorry NRTFT but the RSPCA and police need to be informed if you’ve not done so already as it’s a crime.

Its also likely stolen considering they could have sold it and made some money.

If you get seen with a puppy that was reported stolen and you say you found it, you will not be believed.

raincamepouringdown · 13/04/2023 18:33

Hope the puppy has a long happy life with you. Well done for saving him from an awful fate.

RicherThanYews · 13/04/2023 18:34

Pick a colour palette and I'll make your new baby a blanket. Congratulations. I'm serious, DM me.

suzettenoisette · 13/04/2023 18:35

I can't believe people here are saying you should just keep it. It's theft. Please don't listen to them and call the police.

How would you feel if your beloved pet was stolen and lost and then someone just kept it?

That kind of act isn't helping the puppy, it's cruel.
