What should I do? I can't afford the bloody vets but now worried sick!

You need an emergency vet. Maybe they can do a payment plan. You don't want to risk it with dogs and chocolate.

OneAndDon3 · 13/01/2023 18:23

How much did they eat?

You'll know soon if they're sick it causes hyperactivity before toxicity. If they freak out you need to go to the vet.

This.

How much did it eat?
Approximately 500g of milk chocolate is poisonous to a 10kg dog. The average chocolate bar contains 56g-85g of milk chocolate. It would take two to three bars to poison a 5kg dog. Note: semi-sweet chocolate has a similar toxic level.

How big is the dog and how much did it eat?

spagettinoodlebrain · 13/01/2023 18:24

How much toblerone and how big is your dog? It needs to be sick so let it drink lots of water.
My dog ate a chocolate bunny eater egg and was very poorly, I stayed up with him all night then took to vets where he was on a drip for 36 hours. Phone the vets they might be able to give your poor dog something

Y7drama · 13/01/2023 18:24

I know it’s not good for them but my childhood first dog ate loads of chocolate (stole it at various times) and was fine. It was in the days before people knew it was bad. I’d just keep an eye on them and see if they seem ok.

frenchnoodle · 13/01/2023 18:25

If it was one segment of a small bar your dog will probably be okay.

DorothyCannoli · 13/01/2023 18:25

You absolutely must call the vet. They will give the dog something to induce vomiting and then also treat them for the dehydration that the vomiting will cause.

Namechanged131 · 13/01/2023 18:25

How much did they have ? One of dogs had a cast iron stomach and often ate choc before we knew how dangerous it was . Recent years my dog ate sugar free chewing gum which is poisonous and the vet told us to spoon feed him salt water to make him throw it up . Caused lots of vomiting and diarrahea but it worked . But we did under supervision of a phone call with the vet as emergency .

SirenSays · 13/01/2023 18:26

Call your vet and ask for advice. Mine are always great for this

Cileymyrus · 13/01/2023 18:27

Phone these guys:

www.animalpoisonline.co.uk

they will calculate if the amount is an issue for your dog.

think it’s about £30. You used to get that back off the vet if they needed treatment but it’s a long time since I used them.

might save you a vet trip and will give peace of mind if he doesn’t need treatmen.

RampantIvy · 13/01/2023 18:27

How much did it eat and how big is the dog?

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 13/01/2023 18:28

Totally depends on the size of the dog and the amount and type of chocolate

Cileymyrus · 13/01/2023 18:29

Which may not be necessary. And will cost £££

ime a lot vets do this regardless of whether they’ve had enough to cause a problem, especially if they’re inexperienced with poisoning.

Meltinthemiddle · 13/01/2023 18:30

Dog is 12 kgs. This much of a large bar! She is so pleased with herself 😭

I think your dog will prob be fine but it’s whether you take the chance. My dog once ate an Easter egg when I was a kid and was fine. I would maybe call the vet and see what they say but it doesn’t look like your dog has eaten too much so hopefully she will be ok

Flaunch · 13/01/2023 18:32

You can work out the toxicity level if you know how much has been eaten and how much they weigh. My dog ate an entire chocolate orange - little shit! - and was fine. My friends dog ate an entire toblerone.

Most cheap chocolate has so little actual chocolate in you probably don’t need to worry.

you would definitely need a vet if it were dark or posh chocolate, though.

DadANDPK · 13/01/2023 18:33

So she's had 2-3 pyramids?

what breed is she?

Meltinthemiddle · 13/01/2023 18:33

58g I think if it want already open!

OP posts:
daisyjgrey · 13/01/2023 18:35

I'd take a punt that it'll be ok with that amount. My JRT ate a whole box of Thorntons once and didn't bat an eyelid 🙄

Meltinthemiddle · 13/01/2023 18:35

Yes! Maybe 2 and a bit l. She is a cockapoo

nc1013 · 13/01/2023 18:36

The emergency vet near me have a policy where they won't charge if it's a genuine emergency and you can't afford treatment. Maybe worth asking

RambamThankyouMam · 13/01/2023 18:40

Oh just leave it. They'll be fine. Massive overreactions on this thread, as usual.

PoorMegHopkins · 13/01/2023 18:41

There are a few online calculators that will show how much is toxic- I would suspect this is fine but you can check. The amounts are actually reasonably large. Dark chocolate is much worse. The cocoa % is key.
This is from a dog owner of a dog who has scavenged all sorts over the years.
