@DadANDPK raisins are either really really toxic or not at all. But you don’t know which applies to your dog.
Speaking from experience here btw 😂 bloody dog.

My friends whippets were firmly in the not toxic camp - for everything. There were relentless scavengers and could open the best baby lock etc. the things these dogs ate including bags of raisins, bars if dark choc, blocks of cheese complete with wrapper and never a sick or sorry day in their 17 and 19 years was jaw dropping.

MrsSkylerWhite · 13/01/2023 20:44

Which breed and how much was eaten? We took our 6 month old Parson Russell in when she found a bag of milk chocolate buttons under the bed in my son’s room years ago.

We thought she had eaten around 8. She was well, no sign of any problems and our vet told us that the dangerous issue was high cocoa content dark chocolate, which can be lethal.

If you have a grown lab who ate a triangle, it probably won’t cause any harm so please try not to worry too much. Call for advice, though. Hope all is well.

liveforsummer · 13/01/2023 20:45

I know of literally loads of dogs that have eaten chocolate, I know not one that has died off eating chocolate! Dramalhama

My friend lost his beloved border terrier after a very small amount of chocolate. Not all dogs can tolerate it unfortunately.

RampantIvy · 13/01/2023 20:49

Is chocolate toxic to dogs?

Yes, chocolate is toxic to dogs. While rarely fatal, chocolate ingestion can result in significant illness. Chocolate is toxic because it contains a chemical called theobromine, as well as caffeine. Theobromine is the main toxin in chocolate and is very similar to caffeine. Both chemicals are used medicinally as a diuretic, heart stimulant, blood vessel dilator, and a smooth muscle relaxant. Dogs cannot metabolize theobromine and caffeine as well as people can. That is why dogs are more sensitive to the chemicals’ effects.

For the benefit of posters who deny that chocolate is dangerous for dogs ^^

Whilst on holiday the DCs we're looking after my 8kg dog and she managed to eat a large bar of Galaxy that was a present. She was fine, bit of a dodgy tummy and they didn't tell me until I got home about 4 days later.

Cileymyrus · 13/01/2023 20:55

Be interesting to see whether the Americanisation of uk chocolate and replacing cocoa butter with palm oil has made the theobromine content lower.

CopperMaran · 13/01/2023 20:59

If not affording vets in an issue and insurance costs feel unobtainable tight now, then pls look into PDSA eligibility. It’s a desperate situation to be in to need treatment and not be able to afford it.

LimeCheesecake · 13/01/2023 21:07

Op - do you not have insurance for your dog or is it you can’t afford the excess? I would strongly push getting insurance if you don’t yet, it is horrible having to make choices like this.

DeoForty · 13/01/2023 21:14

Why could 80s dogs eat chocolate and modern dogs can't? We used to feed my cocker spaniel Cadbury mint crisp on road trips.

Meltinthemiddle · 13/01/2023 18:50

Ok vets have just said keep an eye on as it's milk chocolate and a small amount! Still slightly worried 😣. This is because my teenage son leaves food in the floor in his room so it's fair game according to the dog!

Your dog will probably be fine OP. As the vet said, it's milk chocolate so contains a much lower percentage of the poisonous ingredient, and she didn't eat a lot. my labrador puppy ate some chocolate buttons someone had dropped in the park and he lived to tell the tale. He also managed to get on top of my gran's bird table (no idea how) and ate 6 stale mince pies she had put on there (yep full of mincemeat which is bad for them too). And...my uncle's golf glove (he threw it up and re-ate it, and threw it up again before we got that out of him. Honestly his stomach is like a charity shop.

Border terriers are about half the size of OP's cockapoo so it's not really comparable.

Yes, some dogs die eating chocolate but there's no need to send OP into a panic. She's spoken to the vet who has told her it's highly likely to be absolutely fine.

MN seems to love scaremongering on these threads and it's just not necessary.

Meltinthemiddle · 13/01/2023 22:20

Hi yes I do have insurance but wasn't sure if I could claim for this sort of thing. I would have stuck it on the credit card if needed though. It's just not the best month to be spending loads out! Anyway she seems ok, I keep nudging her.soni think she's getting annoyed with me!

Newuser82 · 13/01/2023 22:23

Hopefully the vet has put your mind at rest. Just keep an eye on your dog for any abnormal behaviour, vomiting etc however it tends to be dark chocolate that is the issue not milk and the dog doesn't appear to have eaten much at all. I'd be fairly confident that all will be fine.

That's not high cocoa. Not much chocolate in the 80s was - plain bournville was about as strong as it came and that's under 40%. And probably some dogs did die without people making the connection.

coffeetofunction · 13/01/2023 22:53

Meltinthemiddle · 13/01/2023 18:35

Yes! Maybe 2 and a bit l. She is a cockapoo

My cockerpoo managed to open a wrapped box of chocolates that were a gift for my mil, eat the load and was fine. (She also eat a spikey cactus once)
My jack Russell has been know to eat a full Terry's chocolate orange on one occasion and an Easter egg on an other...again fine. Infant she's 12 now and is fit as a fiddle, not over weight walks miles ect ect.
No dogs are not ment to eat chocolate but then humans are not ment to drink large amounts of alcohol, eat large take aways and take drugs but people do and live to tell the tales.
Keep an eye on your dog and if they appear up well seek advice from a vet, otherwise try and help chocolate out of reach in future.

Dogs will always be drawn to chocolate

Oh just leave it. They'll be fine. Massive overreactions on this thread, as usual.

This

It's NOT an over reaction!

Don't minimise the risk! If people do, others will start thinking it's ok to give dogs chocolate as a treat & it's not.

most dogs will be fine, but not all. It's like Russian Roulette.

DadANDPK · 14/01/2023 10:43

@Meltinthemiddle how is she this morning??

Meltinthemiddle · 14/01/2023 10:55

Hi she has been absolutely fine, no dodgy poos or sickness so hopefully 🤞 she will be ok. Thank you for all ok your advice!

Good to hear, chocolate is toxic to dogs of course, but the panic at the start of the thread over 2 triangles of toberlone was ridiculous, and doesn't help any one. The dog's size, breed and amount of chocolate was all needed before panic, or suggestions of salt water, or induced vomiting.

Your dog had a tiny amount in comparison to her size.

whataboutsecondbreakfast · 14/01/2023 12:24

Sounds like she's absolutely fine Grin

DS needs to learn to hide his Toblerone better in the future though!

Coffeecreme · 14/01/2023 12:45

dogs always always love their forbidden foods!

Corgiowner · 14/01/2023 13:16

About 14 years ago my 15kg dog ate a whole unopened can of Green and Blacks coco powder (125g). I only found out when I went to make a chocolate cake. My husband who didn't know that chocolate can be toxic to dogs said he'd eaten it about three weeks ago he was absolutely fine.

Silvercatowner · 14/01/2023 17:42

louise5754 · 13/01/2023 19:52

Over 40 years ago we didn't know chocolate was harmful. Ours saw the hidden Easter eggs / advent calendars etc and ate the lot. All were fine.

Over 50 years ago you could buy tubs of actual chocolate dog treats. Nice chocolate too.

Long time ago, my small dog ate a whole chocolate orange and was fine. Her poos were normal except for a sparkly quality.

WeepingSomnambulist · 14/01/2023 17:49

I'm only saying this because everything worked out well.

Toberone sounds like how Scooby Doo would say toblerone. I enjoyed that typo.
