What should I do? I can't afford the bloody vets but now worried sick!

OP posts:

Our little dog stole a whole box of chocolate champagne truffles last year and wolfed the whole lot down. She was slightly tipsy for a while, but the vet said it was nothing to worry about. That was around 250g and she is only 7kg! And more recently she ate half of a whole massive Toblerone bar and again the vet said not to worry about it. She was so pleased with herself. We are incredibly careful about leaving chocolates out but she's so bloody sneaky she can climb onto things and sniff out the chocolate, honestly I wouldn't worry a bit, all dogs are different but it doesn't even look like she had that much.

mrsbyers · 13/01/2023 19:21

Dogs can eat a lot of milk chocolate without any issues , it’s dark that causes the problems

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 13/01/2023 19:22

Surely you would just have to pay excess and rest on insurance if needed?

But agree with others, thats a small amount of chocolate

Some can't, it's a lottery with dogs!

Nap1983 · 13/01/2023 19:24

She’ll be fine. They have to eat quite a reasonable amount of milk chocolate for it to be toxic. Dark chocolate is much worse

Totally false, and dangerous info! It’s the theobromine content that is toxic to dogs, and dark, milk and white chocolate ALL contain it.
also to the people claiming posters are overreacting, they aren’t. Speak to any vet who has seen loads of dogs die due to theobromine poisoning, they will tell you how toxic it can be. In this case OP the amount your dog has eaten is in the safe limit.

SuperGinger · 13/01/2023 19:27

Hope your dog is okay, I came on to MN because our elderly cat (16) who is on a strict diet just stole some foie gras.

OddsocksinmyDocs · 13/01/2023 19:31

Your dog will probably be fine. Just keep an eye :)

I overheard my vet saying yesterday that he's seen a dog eat 20 raisins and be absolutely fine, and another die by eating just one.

Mileage clearly varies.

Raisins aren’t the same as chocolate. Some dogs have a response to raisins which you don’t know about until it’s too late. It’s not volume related. It causes the kidneys to fail acutely. Most dogs don’t have this predisposition but, a small percentage do.
I know this as my 12 year old German shepherd ate 1 mince pie out the bin just before Christmas. He spent 3 days in dog hospital and it cost me £1750 😑

MissMaple82 · 13/01/2023 19:37

My dog ate a box of quality street once and was absolutely fine and dandy

ThatOneChinHair · 13/01/2023 19:39

is it also that some dogs just do not have a problem with chocolate?

mine is a terrible thief and has opened bedside cabinets to get a box of cream eggs out to devour. she has also stolen my Dark chocolate lint bars on various occasions, and been fine.

She cannot tolerate roast beef/steak at all though (again stolen) and we end up at the vets for antiflamataries, and 2 days of being lethargic and us bring fresh water to her wherever she's laid out.

StarDolphins · 13/01/2023 19:41

How big is your dog & how much choc.

My dog ate a bag of choc coins & an advent calendar & was fine, just a sloppy poo! & he’s small (Shiz Tzu)

Hairlikeabewitchedhaystack · 13/01/2023 19:42

Just to reassure you my cockapoo ate half a tub of Quailty Street (including wrappers) on New Years Eve. The vet calculated that because the chocolates were dairy and poor quality they didn't pose much of a risk to his liver. He was whimpering and restless. I kept an eye and he vomited some later and the rest gradually over the next few days. All good now and he'd do it again in a heartbeat😄

OddsocksinmyDocs · 13/01/2023 19:42

To be fair, every single dog I know has eaten chocolate of some sort!

so all the work done by vet toxicologists is wrong because your dog was fine and dandy?

anecdote is not data.

as Pp have said there’s a lot of factors. How much theobromine is in the product, some milk chocolate will have less than other brands, dark chocolate has more, white chocolate has only small amounts.

then it depends on the weight of the dog and the amount eaten.

theobromine isn’t just a give them a bad stomach toxin, it has cardiac effects.

the uk veterinary poisons service has only existed since the 90’s, which is when much more became known about animal poisoning as they collected case reports and established toxic doses etc.

APurpleSquirrel · 13/01/2023 19:43

One of my dogs, when I was a child, ate an entire large bar of Mint Bourneville & was fine. Others got into a Mint Matchmakers - particularly impressed with that considering the box.

Cileymyrus · 13/01/2023 19:45

case in point- theobromine is a risk to the heart more than the liver. If the dog has had a toxic dose the liver is not a concern.

Yes! Maybe 2 and a bit l. She is a cockapoo

Only just seen this! I’m pretty sure she’ll be fine after 2-3 pyramids!

My DS’s Cockapoo ate a whole chocolate orange she nicked from under the tree at Christmas. She had diorrheoa the following day but she’s fine.

I know of literally loads of dogs that have eaten chocolate, I know not one that has died off eating chocolate! Dramalhama

louise5754 · 13/01/2023 19:52

Over 40 years ago we didn't know chocolate was harmful. Ours saw the hidden Easter eggs / advent calendars etc and ate the lot. All were fine.

Coffeecreme · 13/01/2023 19:52

my dog ate a huge swiss bar
and was promptly sick
when i was a teenager

Phos · 13/01/2023 19:54

Our border collie scarfed one of those massive kick ass Toblerones you only get a duty frees abroad and no ill effects. How is the dog doing now?

Georgeskitchen · 13/01/2023 20:19

My labrador ate a full box of milk tray she was fine 🙂

liveforsummer · 13/01/2023 20:36

I think chocolate is one of those things that not all dogs actually react to. My little 6kg Jack Russell is never one for eating or chewing anything she shouldn't so we arent especially careful about putting things away. The other day I found the empty wrapper of what was 3/4 of a bar of fererro rocher chocolate that she must have, very uncharacteristicly eaten. We'd been out all day and she hadn't been in that room at all that day or since early the day before so it was obvious at this stage, minimum of about 30 hours, potentially much longer later that she was indeed fine, at the time id have had her checked if I'd known as she's fully insured, so it was maybe a blessing we'd not all gone through that unnecessarily. To add that most commercial milk chocolate probably contains very little cocoa so try not to worry, especially as the vets too have told you just to monitor. It really is worth having insurance though. Even the most basic policy will cover for this sort of emergency and won't cost too much compared to a hefty emergency bill
