It's 34C where I am and idiots are walking dogs. Are these people totally stupid. My dog hasn't been for a walk since Friday due to the heat. I am shocked 😲 at the stupidity of some people.

@coffeecupsandfairylights I found the same page last night.

85F is a little under 30C. So yes, potentially yesterday some surfaces would have been too hot for some dogs. But the 'your dogs feet will INCINERATE' squad were out on my local FB last week when it was about 27C max.

Call me picky, but I prefer facts and sensible guidelines to screeching hysteria.

Oh, I agree that the hysteria is unhelpful, but it's also unhelpful to say that heatstroke and burnt paws aren't an issue in this country when his suffer from both every summer, including those that are otherwise fit and healthy.

21 degrees is a pretty normal summer temperature even in the UK, surely? My spaniel wouldn't turn a hair at 21c. Seems a bit extreme to say never walk a dog in 21c or above - we'd be at home for all of July and August in that case.

Yeah, stopping walks at 21 degrees us a bit of an overreaction but again it depends on breed and each individual dog.

For example my beagle is generally fine up until 25 degrees but I walk a sarloos wolfdog who really struggles once it hits about 20.

vivainsomnia · 20/07/2022 16:05

My dog will stop walking suddenly and expect to be picked up if they even have a tiny gravel or piece of grass on one of their paws. I know for a fact they'd do the same if it was too hot for them.

Of course some dogs are at risk. The issue is the warriors who make nasty assumptions purely on the basis of their own dogs behaviour and not knowing the circumstances of the person and dog walking at a time they wouldn't walk their dog.

I asked my neighbour again if she'd seen dogs with burnt paws or heat stroke in the last two days. She said no burnt paws, 2 dogs unwell where heat could have been a contributor but not certain. Yet I saw quite a few dogs walked between 8am and 6pm yesterday.

I walked my dog in the park between 10am - 11 am. There were other dogs there and it was about 28 degrees I think. So very hot but it was clear that he was fine.

Small amount of pavement on the way home but he always walked on the shaded bits anyway.

This. And some dogs might be fine in 28 degrees or more. It really depends on a number of factors. Calling people idiots without knowing these factors is what is idiotic.

yep

*I think op's question of 'are these people totally fucking stupid ' has partly been answered by those saying but why not at 6am/9pm/I can walk on tarmac!! People are indeed idiots. Don't walk your dog over 21degrees. You fucking idiots.

I think it's partly laziness - people take their dogs out for walks to tire them out because they can't be fucked to spend time playing with or spending time with or training them indoors. Walking is easier. Fuckwits.*

Just read the whole thread.

ffs what a load of rubbish this is. Was wondering where the whole "not over 21 degrees " bollox came from🙄 My kitchen is often hotter than that .

Blimey.

Dog dies after being out at 9am in 21 degrees playing fetch. The vet said 'if you think it is too hot to put a thick coat on and go for a run, don’t make your dog do the same.'

Haha, unamed vet posting in FB. Now that's reliable information! Blistering heat at 21 degrees 😂

Omg. So you say " don't go out over 21' degrees? Because you read that????

sunglassesonthetable · 21/07/2022 08:23

You realise circumstances are so so so variable?

Yet you're happy to be calling people lazy and fuckwits?

sunglassesonthetable · 21/07/2022 08:41

And tbh @Lovelycheese I don't take my dog for walks " out of laziness ". 🙄

I do it because he LOVES it.
