IDIOTS walking dogs in heat.

It's 34C where I am and idiots are walking dogs. Are these people totally stupid. My dog hasn't been for a walk since Friday due to the heat. I am shocked 😲 at the stupidity of some people.

21 degrees is an ok heat if your dog is fit and well. Of course people shouldn’t be walking any dogs, never mind brachycephalic dogs in outrageous heat like this, but all dogs are different. A decent dog owner would known what their dog was comfortable with so at 6am at 23 degrees is perfectly fine for some, not others. Just like humans.

MagentaRocks · 18/07/2022 15:03

obviously the temperature is different depending on where you are. DH got up at 5.30 to take my 2 to the woods this morning, it was pretty cool when he left but after 10 minutes at the woods it started to heat up. I was planning on getting up at 4.30 tomorrow to take them but it is looking like it will be 23 degrees at that time so may need to be a day of no walking, if it is a bit cooler I will take them out for a short one, in the woods in the shaded part under the trees. If not then they will just have to go without. My oldest dog doesn’t drink much so don’t want to risk it.

vivainsomnia · 18/07/2022 15:06

You obviously don't live in the same climate as most of us then so your dog will be used to it
And why sirs this not apply here? My dog was much more bothered in May when we had the first temp around 20 than more recently in temps over 24. That's because he has indeed acclimated.

That doesn't mean I'd take him in 30 degrees, but they are perfect fine in temp around 24/25 asking as there is some cool breeze and shade.

Some dogs really struggle in temperature of 20, and others are indeed fine in 28 degrees temp.

The idiots are those who can't recognise their dog's needs, whatever they are. Not those who dare to take their dog out in 22 degrees because someone has arbitated that anything over 21 degrees is bound to make any dog ill or injured.

If you live in a flat you really should have an option for them to pee during weather like this. We have a grass potty patch on the balcony so no need to walk anywhere

Lol yes because every flat has a balcony 🤦‍♂️😂

There are lots of homeless people staying in the shade at the local park. I've just filled a load of water bowls for their dogs and even now it's peak heat there are two people dragging their overheating french bulldogs around the park.

Did you offer the people water too?

Blackmoggy · 18/07/2022 15:14

Far too many people are busy bodies. Live and let live. Not your dog, not your problem. You don't know everyone's circumstances so MYOB. I can't imagine having the energy to get up in arms over people walking their dogs in the summer. Lol

TrufflesForBreakfast · 18/07/2022 15:18

We went out early this morning when it was lovely and cool, however this evening it will be too hot - even at 10pm it's forecast to be 27 degrees here.

ShirleyPhallus · 18/07/2022 15:22

Yeah it’s really stupid but I also think it’s unnecessary to have not walked the dog since friday. No part of the country has been that hot since then that the dog can’t have gone out early or late, especially if you can take them to a wooded area / streams

Picklypickles · 18/07/2022 15:24

I haven't got a dog, but I've been seeing the neighbours cats out walking about the streets today - nobody is forcing them to go outside they just do as they please and they look perfectly fine to me, no flaming paws or anything!

Are all dogs really that fragile or is it just those pathetic little designer toy dogs?

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 18/07/2022 15:25

We were out and back by 6.30, lovely shady walk for much of it, will be going at 5 tomorrow. No evening walks, it’s 37° at the moment.

I think it really depends on the animal tbh. I’m trusting my dog somewhat to come and go in the garden / house as she pleases, she has been out in the garden and padding around a bit but then coming back inside to lie on the cold stone kitchen tiles

I always think the charts they share online about what temps to stop walking your dog in overdo it a bit, 21 degrees for most dogs is absolutely fine for a walk esp not in the direct lightn

Cats are completely different from dogs when it comes to sun; cats originated in deserts and can, even now, still tolerate higher temperatures than dogs.

Also the cat is deciding for itself where it goes, it's not being dragged out on a lead by some idiot owner who doesn't have a clue.

I've been going out at around 5.30 in the morning with my dog for her walks.

Since we came back from our walk this morning she's spent most of the day upstairs where it's cooler, just coming down and going into the garden for a wee.

I really miss our afternoon walk, but she's got a thick double coat so it's been too hot for day time walks for a while now.

Roll on winter.

Fit healthy dogs will acclimatise to the heat after about 10 days and will be happy and able to safely walk in temps up to 23 degrees with no issue.

Obviously it would be sensible to pick the activity levels and encourage shady walks and not mad crazy ball throwing or over vigourous activity

However sniffing calm trotting walks would be fine for most healthy fit dogs.

PeloAddict · 18/07/2022 15:42

We've had lots of people who had planned to walk their dogs today (while their car was in) ask to bring their dogs inside instead
Work has tiled floors, AC, dog treats and water plus all the staff want to fuss them so a lot of VERY happy dogs!

I have a cat and he's an idiot so.. Grin cats do as they please even if it's not best for them
Found him asleep on a thermal blanket lightly roasting himself as opposed to the cooling mat

PringlePoppin · 18/07/2022 15:48

Serious question.

Do cats have thicker paw pads than dogs? How comes they are all out in the street ?

Stretchandsnap · 18/07/2022 15:48

My pup was out at 7am this morning in the park (we drove down) and it was 19c, we had a nice walk and play with all the other dogs there and a swim in the river and he’s been chilling on his cool mat ever since. I’ll take him out again about 9pm this evening for a short sniff and splash if it’s not too hot

oldwhyno · 18/07/2022 15:49

Our dog is desperate for a walk, even on hot days. We just go early, don't go too far, and take water.

I think if anything the heat is getting to some PP's heads on "The doghouse".

Oh its always hot in The Dog House Grin

HelenHywater · 18/07/2022 15:57

I walked my dogs this morning at 6.

Genuine question - is it the sun that makes it too hot (so the pavement is hot)? Willl it be ok to walk dogs tomorrow morning at dawn even though it's supposed to be 25 degrees - there'll be no sun/hot pavements then?

Ours would be absolutely fine at that temp in the shade

Iheartmysmart · 18/07/2022 16:06

Another flat dwelling dog owner - without a balcony! We went out about 530 this morning for an hour and I’ve carried my dog from the front door to the communal garden for a quick wee several times throughout the day. He’s currently lounging in front of the fan with his cool vest on having had a bowl of dog ice cream!

We’ll go out again for a proper walk about 10pm. There’s a lake just over the road where the temperature always seems quite a few degrees lower than elsewhere. It’ll probably be the same routine tomorrow.

perimenofertility · 18/07/2022 16:14

Anyone taking their dog for walks in this heat doesn't deserve to have a dog. I honestly think people should have to have training before they can take on the responsibility of an animal.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 18/07/2022 16:35

My mum took some persuading that her 8 year old Frenchie really would be better off not being walked at all for a couple of days, even after dark, as it'll still be very hot, and she has breathing difficulties in normal temperatures.

Our 7 month old Cavalier is cross he's not getting walked, but he's extra chews, and treats in his puzzle feeder to divert him, and the occasional ice cube to chase around the kitchen floor.

Agree with you, some people are seriously lacking in logic.

Beyond stupid.
