IDIOTS walking dogs in heat.

It's 34C where I am and idiots are walking dogs. Are these people totally stupid. My dog hasn't been for a walk since Friday due to the heat. I am shocked 😲 at the stupidity of some people.

OP posts:

Far too hot to have my two out, they're both chilling in a darkened room with a fan on and wearing cooling harnesses.

SuperCamp · 18/07/2022 13:21

Why can’t they go out at 6am or 9pm?

For me, for example, I cannot walk him at 6am, as our work/school day start at 7am. And 5am it is just too dark, so it is a security risk.

And I have a lab. Who loves a walk, but there is no way he will go at 9pm. His bedtime is 8pm.... (other Lab owners will get it). I am just referring to the hottest of hot days. Usually we go before its dark in the evening, but its not always a set time. But if its over 30 degrees, we don't walk. Luckily I have a big garden so we go and have a wander around there, have a chat and look at the plants etc. He certainly isn't neglected as he didn't roam the streets for a few days.

I was also able to walk comfortably barefoot on our tarmac drive

You wont be able to later is it is indeed hitting 35 degrees now.

bigbluebus · 18/07/2022 13:51

We were travelling back after a weekend away yesterday. Stopped at a set of traffic lights/pedestrian crossing and a family walked across in front of us with a small fluffy white dog on a lead. It was 33°c on our car thermometer! The poor little thing had it's tongue hanging out, was panting and goodness knows what the heat of the tarmac and paving stones was doing to it's paws. Unbelievable stupidity.

Comefromaway · 18/07/2022 13:53

I expect to be able to at around 9-9.30pm tonight.

Hoppinggreen · 18/07/2022 13:55

We went to an event at our local park yesterday, it was around 30 degrees.
People were walking French Bulldogs and Pugs, 2 breeds that cant breathe well at the best of times - fucking idiots
DDog was walked at 7 yesterday in shaded woods and then at 10pm. DH took him out at 6.30 this morning and he wont go out apart from into the garden for a quick wee until 9.30/10 tonight

Responses like this really piss me off, just keep your dogs in as much as possible when it's hot ffs. I've just been to the garage in bare feet to test it before letting the dog out and the path is boiling so I've hosed it down in cold water, yet there's still dicks walking their dogs past the house, no shade, no water with them

Crow12345 · 18/07/2022 13:57

We have this too perfect for dogs in apt

WeeHaggisFace · 18/07/2022 13:58

DH and I have been saying the same. Ours were out early this morning before it hit 18 and won't be out again today as the temp won't lower enough to allow it

Hembria · 18/07/2022 13:58

Not everyone walking their dog can avoid it, for example, I am staying in a hotel with my dog this week visitng family. We have to pop out for pees even in the heat.

But yes I do agree that walking dogs in the heat isn't fair on them.

Ivedonethisthreetimealready · 18/07/2022 13:59

My young fit heathly dogs have been walked at 5.00am for the last few days and will be tomorrow (predicted height 19 degrees)

The quiet shady dog walking areas are packed here at 5.00am. About 5 degrees cooler in the woodland.

Just stopping all walks for days on end is pretty mean for the dogs when there is cool safe times to walk them - just need to get up early!

Ivedonethisthreetimealready · 18/07/2022 14:00

predicted temperature not height!

Lovelycheese · 18/07/2022 14:00

I think op's question of 'are these people totally fucking stupid ' has partly been answered by those saying but why not at 6am/9pm/I can walk on tarmac!! People are indeed idiots. Don't walk your dog over 21degrees. You fucking idiots.

I think it's partly laziness - people take their dogs out for walks to tire them out because they can't be fucked to spend time playing with or spending time with or training them indoors. Walking is easier. Fuckwits.

@StrangeCondition I think the poster is just being goady. It is not the first time I have had similar responses. I really just do not get it.

Aria20 · 18/07/2022 14:01

We were out 6.40 this morning and the pavements were fine, it was getting warm already by 7am so it was a short walk! We saw lots of dog walkers out then and none have gone past since about 8.30 - it's a very busy dog walking area. We may go into the woods after 9pm as it's fully shaded there so much cooler. We have fan on and cool mat, ice in her water etc and only popping out to the garden for toilet breaks. She still keeps trying to get me to play despite me trying to get her to do calm activities. She's a 17 month old spaniel tho so lots of energy and doesn't understand why I have confiscated her balls so she can't run around like a loon.

Comefromaway · 18/07/2022 14:02

EXCUSE ME!

Where have I said that I would walk our dog in the middle of the day in intense heat? I absolutely would not. I even commented on an idiot that was walking his pug along the main road yesterday afternoon.

I will walk the dog (or rather dh will) this evening at whatever time it cools down sufficiently which is likely to be around 9.30pm ish. There is more shade etc in the country park at the end of our road than in our garden. I needed a cardigan last night. The pavements will be cool enough not to damage his paws. If they are not, he will not be walked.

vivainsomnia · 18/07/2022 14:03

FGS, can people hust stop projecting!

I've just tested the tarmac to get to my car, in the sun, and it was perfect bearable. There is a cool breeze where I am and it's nowhere as hot as they predicted. It really is not that different to temperatures we had earlier in the year.

I haven't taken my dog out yet today, and I'll see how it gets later but the drama that has been going on in the last week is getting very tedious.

Walk your dog when you think is right for you and your dog. Report anyone whose dog appear in genuine distressed if you are out.

But please stop sprouting generalities that don't impact on every one and every dog, it doesn't make you a more responsible and caring dog owner.

SirenSays · 18/07/2022 14:04

There are lots of homeless people staying in the shade at the local park. I've just filled a load of water bowls for their dogs and even now it's peak heat there are two people dragging their overheating french bulldogs around the park.

murasaki · 18/07/2022 14:04

I was chatting to a colleague this morning who is a dog owner , and as he said, no dog ever died from two days of.not walking. The alternative though... I agreed with him

Collidascope · 18/07/2022 14:05

I walked my dog at half 5 and got him back by 7am. Now the idiot keeps going in the garden (it's 34 degrees) to lie in the sunniest corner. Genuinely don't know what goes on in his head. He's got a massive fur coat too.

OR MAYBE people don’t all live in the same town and it’s a different temperature/set up at those times?! Doesn’t mean they are fucking idiots. I walked my dog at 9:30 last night. Hottest temperature here during the day was 22. By 9:30 it was cold enough to need a jumper on, and we walked along the beach on the cold wet sand and he had a lovely splash in the sea.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 18/07/2022 14:08

I've got a friend who lives in a flat and doesn't have a car. She has to take her dog out to pee. Personally I think it's really unfair on the dog, but also it's unfair if the dog is expected to hold his bladder for 12 hours.

Comefromaway · 18/07/2022 14:08

Well, quite. Ds went out in a hoody last night. The woodland was beautiful and cool.

justasking111 · 18/07/2022 14:09

Our dog was in the sea at 7am I've just showered him in the bath cool water coz he's panting. He's limited to house and garden until tomorrow morning

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 18/07/2022 14:10

Our neighbour's teacup yorkie collapsed on the road at lunchtime when she took him for a walk. He has long hair all through the year and a padded harness on which will only make him warmer! Poor thing is at the vets now
