It's 34C where I am and idiots are walking dogs. Are these people totally stupid. My dog hasn't been for a walk since Friday due to the heat. I am shocked 😲 at the stupidity of some people.

How and where do you think people walk dogs in warm countries and live in flats??
Early morning and 9pm is ok as the pavements are not that hot.
Putting the dog with windows down to a shady park, stream, etc. is also an option.

Kione · 18/07/2022 14:14

Tip at home, freeze towels for them to lie on and put ice cubes in the water.

ihatethefuckingmuffin · 18/07/2022 14:14

Can their bladder hold out for several hours? Isn’t this one of the reasons why owners who work hire dog walkers to allow them to pee? I thought vets also recommended 6-8 hours between pees?

Kione · 18/07/2022 14:16

Lazydaisy agreed! Also a lot of streets have plenty of trees that lowers the temperature.
It totally depends on where you live.

Mariposa80 · 18/07/2022 14:16

Don't walk your dog over 21degrees. You fucking idiots.

My dog is perfectly fine walking in shaded areas with access to water at 22/23 degrees.

TheAirbender · 18/07/2022 14:18

My Dubai born, recently arrived in the uk saluki would never have gone outside if we’d stuck to 21c! Walked her at 9am today. She was fine, but then she would often sunbathe in 45c 🤷🏻‍♀️

BotterMon · 18/07/2022 14:18

Poor dogs not being walked at all! Obviously not between 9 and 21.00 but my dog would go nuts if not walked.

Got 3kms in at 6am before leaving to work (no DD's not home alone) and he'll have another one late evening. There's a breeze and we just go to the woods where it's cooler.

My dog walker isn't working which is completely understandable.

Those owners walking in the heat of the day should be reported.

zoopigi · 18/07/2022 14:20

Don't walk your dog over 21 degrees?? Where I live it doesn't get down to 21 degrees until November! Dog gets walked at 7am and 7pm

MintyGreenDreams · 18/07/2022 14:20

My Chihuahuas are heat shy anyway to say they're of Mexican descent! I certainly wouldn't be walking them in this.
Mintydog will just lay around and Mintypup will half heartedly play with her soft toy and nap probably.

Topseyt123 · 18/07/2022 14:21

When I had my dogs they were not walked in during heatwaves. Nor did they show the remotest interest in it. They prefI certainly wouldn't walk one at present.

That's because your dog is acclimatised to high temperatures, in the UK our dogs aren't hence the very high risk of them over heating and gathering heatstroke.

Topseyt123 · 18/07/2022 14:25

That should have read that I certainly wouldn't walk one at present.

These people walking theirs in the heat of the day at the moment are fuckwits. Perhaps they should be made to don a thick, heavy coat and be dragged around whilst not being allowed to take it off.

I'd better not even start on those who leave them in hot cars!!

Enko · 18/07/2022 14:26

Dh took DDog out at 6 am this morning he said he met loads of our regular dog walk friends (whom we would usually see with their dog in the afternoon) who were all trying to ensure their dogs had a walk before it got too hot. Many people are trying their best for their dogs at the moment too.

DDog is lying on the sofa trying to work out a way to be somewhat comfy. He has his cool mat to lay on but today has decided the sofa is better :)

Not saying that some people are not idiots just that where we are it seems people have really listened and are keeping their dogs safe.

onmywayamarillo · 18/07/2022 14:27

I took my dog out this morning on a shady breezy woodland walk. She's now sulking as I won't let her lie in the garden in the sun, it's 37 out there!!!

HelloAllll · 18/07/2022 14:30

I took mine out at 5am and it started to heat up very quickly. We were back home for 5.45, having been through the fields so nothing but grass, and i would not have wanted them out any later.

regrett · 18/07/2022 14:30

Took my pup out at 7am as it was 18 degrees here. It's forecast to be 25 degrees the same time tomorrow so will skip a day.

Just drove back from shop though and saw someone walking a Lassie collie, car temp thing says it's 36 degrees. Some people are just thick.

Coffeeholix · 18/07/2022 14:33

I walk my dog (through fields and woods) around 6am everyday, and did this morning. Tomorrow i might make it 5am. I’m always surprised how few other people / dogs I meet.

CbaThinkingOfAUsername · 18/07/2022 14:34

When you say 'a walk', do you mean they are out taking their dog for a long walk or do you mean just a short walk to the end of the street and back? As not everyone has gardens so dogs do need to access the outside to do their business.

Lovelycheese · 18/07/2022 14:40

You obviously don't live in the same climate as most of us then so your dog will be used to it

Cashewwws · 18/07/2022 14:43

I just went out, it’s 36 here and there was a woman quite literally pulling her dog along into the tube station. It didn’t want to walk and clearly was really hot, I assume pavement was hot for its paws too :( I mean WTF! Made me so so angry.

I would of said something poor dog - stupid woman 🤬

isthismylifenow · 18/07/2022 14:49

The 7 second test

Here is a link showing that an at air temperature of 35 degrees, the tarmac can be 65 degrees!

Jalisco · 18/07/2022 14:51

But please stop sprouting generalities that don't impact on every one and every dog, it doesn't make you a more responsible and caring dog owner.

^This^

My Border Collie was absolutely fine, where we are, at 9am this morning. Other dogs might not have been, but he was.

And how many threads do we need to have on this subject? If a dog is in distress then it shouldn't be out. If the surfaces it walks on are hot, it shouldn't be on them. Perhaps there are some stupid dog owners. There are certainly stupid people. Some might even be on MN. But I doubt they are bloody reading these threads!

Branster · 18/07/2022 14:56

It would be stupid go take a dog out in this heat walking on pavements or in a dry park.

But how can you possibly not take your dog out since Friday?????? Has it been a constant 34C where you are since then? Day and night???? Seriously.

I take our dogs out to the river every morning (5, 6AM very rarely 7) and every late afternoon. No drying.
They also get a walk through the woods at 9PM when it's lovely and cool.

Today we'll skip the 6PM and go to the river at 9PM.

They'd be climbing up the walls within 24h otherwise.

Eeksteek · 18/07/2022 14:56

I won’t be walking mine. They’re old girls and don’t mind. We often skip the odd day if the weather is awful. They don’t seem that bothered tbh. I got them cool mats and have a fan with ice bottles in front, but they are ignoring both and neither is even panting.

we’ve been going in the evenings while it’s been hot, but won’t go tonight (our low at 2am is 22°C!)
