I was just reading another post about 'the old days'.

Someone remembers pet dogs being let out to roam in the 70s.

Oh my god, does anyone else remember this? And white dog poo on the pavements?

Yes my neighbours dog always used to be let out roam up and down the street. Lots of white dog poo around too

Gosh yes. Our family dog was never in during the day. Shagged everything apparently. Ate butchers scraps and bits of Winalot. Pooped wherever, but never in the garden.
Very much a mongrel and not especially cuddly. Nothing like my 2 pampered labs 😂

Yes! The random dogs I used to encounter on the way to school used to terrify me.

Did they just come back in?

When were they let out?

Did they have collars on?

So many questions!!

Yes to white dog poo, no to roaming dogs.

some dogs escaped and had a fun time before taking themselves home. Unlike today when they are on FB lost pets in seconds.

Yes I do. Everyone's dogs were just let out like cats and came home when they were hungry. Same as us kids 😂. My fil told me a story yesterday about a dog he had that went out and never came back and then turned up on the doorstep 7 years later!

It was still happening in the 80s when I was a child. I have clear memories of campaigns against doing this.

White dog poo was everywhere, in my memory.

Quite a few dogs roam here , northwest highlands. I can think of five in my village which potter about pretty frequently. They are all well behaved and keep to themselves. I imagine they do poo though! But to be honest five dogs' worth of poo is just lost in the swamp of dog poo that tourists leave everywhere in summer.
I think if there was a badly behaved dog getting out all the time that people would have something to say about it and it would get sorted pretty fast 😁😆

We used to get them wandering in to the school playground all the time. I think they came looking for 'their' kids. There was even a poem called Dog in the Playground it was such a common occurrence in the 80s and 90s. I think it was in Please Mrs Butler by Alan Ahlberg.

Oh my god, I just can't remember it (and I am definitely old enough!).

It seems akin to sending your 5 year old out for the day now 😳😳😳

Oh yes, all the dogs on our estate used to be let out all day - they would roam around and join in with the kids games. RIP Bobby, Chippy, Blackie and Max, you were all very good dogs.

A friend of mine had a childhood dog that used to regularly get on the bus to the next village, have a want about and then get the bus back. All the drivers knew him by name.

Did they just come back in?

Of course! They knew where they lived.

When were they let out?

When they wanted to go out, or when they were under someone's feet.

Did they have collars on?

Maybe yes, maybe no.

I'm just off to google 'why was dog poo
white'! I have a recollection it's to do with more calcium in their diet?

@BiscoffSundae - can you remember more? Was it just "let Fido out?" Did anyone worry that they didn't know where the dog was?

White dog poo?

From eating bones or bonemeal.

Manchester council estate 1950s/60s. We loved our dog, never took it 'for a walk' - just let it out in the morning, it came back at teatime. Packs of dogs roamed the estate. The idea of taking a dog 'for a walk' would have seemed bizarre.

God yes I remember this. A dog would occasionally get in the playground causing mass hysteria in all the kids 🤣

Yes it's a good part of the reason why dogs terrify me
