Does anyone remember pet dogs being let out to roam???

I was just reading another post about 'the old days'.

Someone remembers pet dogs being let out to roam in the 70s.

Oh my god, does anyone else remember this? And white dog poo on the pavements?

Our dog had a friend who lived nearby, but across a very main road. The dog friend used to come to our house and tap on the front door until we let our dog out. They would run off together and go on the beach (across another big road) then come back via the local butcher who would give them treats.
We lived near a garage with a big petrol forecourt - our dog used to like going there on her own and laying on the forecourt blocking the way in for the cars - the garage man would ring my mum up to come and get the dog.
