I was just reading another post about 'the old days'.

Someone remembers pet dogs being let out to roam in the 70s.

Oh my god, does anyone else remember this? And white dog poo on the pavements?

My Nan and Grandads dog used to wander . On a Saturday morning he would come to our house and wait for my Grandparents who used to call in for a cuppa after doing their shopping. He'd then get a lift back in the car. There were a lot of "Rex" lookalikes in the neighbourhood 🤣

Nomoresmoresthensnores · 26/06/2022 21:24

Yes some dogs but this was not the norm in 80s in my not at all posh area. Farm dogs yes. And there were always scary yard dogs everywhere to stop burglars the kind on a chain looking unloved and demented. What WAS the norm was leaving your dog locked up in your house (kitchen/garage) all day on its own for 10 hours... or leaving it in garden to bark its head off. Dogs didn't go on day trips or holidays. Dog walkers..nope..

notgreatthanks · 26/06/2022 21:25

In the working class north in the 80's absolutely! It was the best day if a rogue dog got in the playground and one of the teachers had to shoe it away!! In a lot of ways it was probably kinder and more natural for dogs to wander the streets than spend the day in cages alone. Think white poo was a deficiency of some sort.

CandyLeBonBon · 26/06/2022 21:25

Yep I remember it. As kids we were similarly feral!!

Mrsfussypants1 · 26/06/2022 21:26

Ah that was why it was white. It wasn't common to have dogs neutered then so alot of dog hormones roaming the streets and unwanted pups. Our own dog didn't run the streets but did escape a few times and had a couple of litters with unknown father's. She was a beautiful looking mongrel, looking at old photos she looked like a labradoodle, her pups did not and were very hard to re home. I also remember the dog warden van going around the streets.

Libertybear80 · 26/06/2022 21:27

DH telling me funny stories of dock packs in Leeds raiding butchers shops, getting on buses. Hilarious.

Nomoresmoresthensnores · 26/06/2022 21:27

White poo is from bones in food. If you get butchers chopped up carcasses raw food (it's a thing. My dog hated it) the poo comes out whiter.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 26/06/2022 21:29

Definitely remember white dog poo.

Mrsfussypants1 · 26/06/2022 21:29

@Nomoresmoresthensnores yes, my parents put the dog in the garage at times, not often but I remember crying to have her back in the house. She did accompany us on local days out to the dene or beach though.

I can't believe this was a thing, never heard of it before!
Why was all their poo white?

It didn't come out white. It went white when it dried up.

Tanfastic · 26/06/2022 21:30

Yep I remember both! Seems so bizarre now. If a random dog was roaming in our street they'd be a Facebook post out within seconds in the local group.

All the random dogs were proper mongrels as well 😂

I used to meet a lovely German Shepherd at the bus stop every morning on my way to school. It used to get on the bus travel 3 stops and get off . Every school morning. I remember gangs of dogs at the park too and obviously all dog poo was white

Did the bus driver just let him on, @Vicliz24 ?

Can you imagine the drama now?!!

How we're they not run over?

D0lphine · 26/06/2022 21:39

I don't even leave the pooch outside Aldi in case she is stolen.

WeAreOnTheRoadToNowhere · 26/06/2022 21:40

Yes. There were responsible owners. Our dog didn't roam. I lived in a small market town and I guess about 5-10 dogs roamed. We knew who owned which dog. One terrified me. It came onto the play ground frequently and tried to shag our legs. It was impossible to get off and everyone was scared of it

Knockoneofftheshelftowin · 26/06/2022 21:40

It was a thing and if you saw a dog that you were scared of, you would walk another way to avoid it.

I also remember us having a dog licence. You could get into trouble for not having one.

mumda · 26/06/2022 21:42

The difference now being dogs get took out mostly on a lead and their poop is put in black plastic bags and thrown on the floor.

Vicliz24 · 26/06/2022 21:44

Yes @einstienagogo the driver let him on every day we nicknamed him Bussy because he was always there and he got off by a pub so I have no idea if he was going to the pub or lived at the pub and was on his return journey😂😂

EinsteinaGogo · 26/06/2022 21:44

Me too, @D0lphine

I don't know many people or in fact anyone at all who would even tie their dog outside a shop for two minutes.

How we're they not run over?

A lot less cars on road.

D0lphine · 26/06/2022 21:45

@EinsteinaGogo

Literally cannot risk it! Dogs get pinched all the time.

Oh my god - what an adventure!

Wonder what was going on in that little doggy mind!!

Yes, the good old days..

We used to call the neighbourhood dogs [name] [surname]. Same with the roaming cats.

So Fido Murphy, Fluffy O'Brien, etc.

If we were calling them we used first name only. If talking about them, we used first name plus surname.

They got roped into games, often playing the role of dad if nobody else wanted to spend the whole game of house sitting on the sidelines making daisy chains ("at work").

Stressybetty · 26/06/2022 21:50

Remember going to the corner shop for sweets with my sister and the dog when we were young. Tied the dog up outside and were almost back home when we realised he was still there! His little face when he saw us coming back!

mathanxiety · 26/06/2022 21:53

In summer the doors of the parish church used to be left open for ventilation and dogs sometimes wandered in and stretched out in the main aisle, or trotted around trying to find their only slightly embarrassed family.

One Sunday morning a dogfight broke out at the top of the aisle in front of the altar.
