I was just reading another post about 'the old days'.

Someone remembers pet dogs being let out to roam in the 70s.

Oh my god, does anyone else remember this? And white dog poo on the pavements?

Myself and DH are always talking about this. Both grew up in council estates in the 1980s. There was always packs of dogs roaming around and white poo everywhere. He was just saying the other day if people of that era saw how we treated our dog they would think we were insane .

I remember meeting our dog in the middle of the town with all his pals .He would come over , say hello and go off again. We were always wandering and so were the dogs .We all met at home at mealtimes.

I remember in the late 70’s a massive (well I was 7/8) chunky Labrador type dog roaming the area. I can still remember the deep scratch marks on our front door where it used to try to get to our little female dog when she was on heat (uncommon for dogs to be neutered then as well I think). Bloody horrible thing. It used to try to hump us in the street. Can’t remember anything being done about it.

Can also remember my mum putting nappies in our dog when she was in heat!

Our dog didn’t roam. We used to take her up the fields on a lead and throw balls for her. Had to run like hell if we saw humpy mutt.

I also remember going to the post office to renew the dog licence. Crazy that they were abolished.

I never knew this how amazing!!

I feel sorry that my dog wasn’t born a few decades ago as she would have loved this!

I do think it’s funny that there are multiple threads about a dog being off it’s lead on here. Imagine what the threads would have been like back then.

One of my strongest childhood memories is seeing two dogs killed by a car. They had just run out in front of it, they were always out roaming around. Would have been about 1965/66.

Yes, my aunty lived a few streets away from my Nan and her dog would be let out and would usually end up lying in front of my Nan’s fire. In Summer when the door was open he’d just come walking in. Often though kids would knock on the door and ask if someone could get the dog off the green outside my Nan’s bungalow because they’d be playing football and he’d be joining in and running away with the ball.

Walking through Northern Spain a couple of years ago, in the tiny villages there would always be lots of little dogs out and about, going about their business, looking like they had places to go and people to see. I loved it!
Not so much the barky farm dogs but that's different.

He also used to go to his doggy friend' s house and 'call' for Patch Walker. (In those days dogs were known by the family surname in our town)

Our cat Sooty used to go and call for Bimbo O'Donoghue. I still think of cats as having their family's name, although that is probably politically incorrect now.

Why would that be politically incorrect?

It was a thing and if you saw a dog that you were scared of, you would walk another way to avoid it.

I also remember us having a dog licence. You could get into trouble for not having one.

I remember there being a big snarly scary dog at the bottom of my road and I actively avoided doing that route to school!

Honestly, can you just imagine, @CallOnMe ?!

I'd be ridiculed. My dog is treated better than the kids (by all of us 😂😂😂)

My friend lives in rural portugal her dog is completely free range. Its really odd when you are out waking and he just comes up to say hello then carries on whatever business he has got going on. He comes home for his tea and sometimes brings a friend.

Narwhalsh · 26/06/2022 22:10

My dogs poop dries white now-fed raw with bone in it

Warmhandscoldheart · 26/06/2022 22:12

Apparently my DGF's dog used to call/bark for their NDN's dog, they would spend the day out and return for their dinner same time every day 😃

ilovepixie · 26/06/2022 22:13

Our childhood dog in the 80's used to 'escape' she roamed about all day and came home at night when she was hungry.
My sisters dog used to escape too and go up to our mums house around the corner, he used to knock the door to be let in 😂😂

rickandmorts · 26/06/2022 22:16

AnyFucker · 26/06/2022 21:15

Apparently white poo was due to high levels of certain minerals in the dog food at the time

It's just from dogs that have bone in their diet. I guess they didn't have as processed a diet as dogs do now plus scraps and bones from the butcher was more common. Our dogs are fed raw which has bones in it and I'm pleased to report their poo goes white 😂

Absolutely remember it

My Dads family let their dog roam as well (long before the 70s) . Out it would go mid morning and home for Dinner . loll. Seems so strange now .
I also remember the white poo

LadyLothbrook · 26/06/2022 22:22

Still frequent in our area in the nineties. Big German sheperds and staffies all over with kids playing in the street. I love it.

LadyLothbrook · 26/06/2022 22:25

I thought the white dog shit was from being dried and bleached in the sun?

The poo of a dog who is only ever fed commercial dog food won't go white no matter how long it sits in the sun. White poo is from the bone content. My raw fed dogs poo would often be white especially if not picked up immediately.

I was born in 1986 but have lots of memories of dogs being let out to roam around.

There was one, a little white terrier thing that lived about half a mile away, who'd always join us in our garden for a bit or would scratch our door to come in. She'd come in and casually lie down or ask for water then after a bit she'd be up and off about her business again.

Enjoyallthewine · 26/06/2022 22:38

Hahaha I love this thread. 😂

ParrotsAteThemAll · 26/06/2022 22:47

Growing up we had a terrier cross from 1980-1997 (yes lived a long life!) he’d bark to go out for his business, we never walked him! When a local dog was on heat he could be gone for days so one of us would be sent to find him! He’d be found running in a pack so my dad was sent to get him in his van, cue the dog howling all night wanting to go out again!

What a brilliant life!

Sounds like me as a child, a bit feral.

MissStarry · 26/06/2022 22:52

I’m loving the dogs going around on the bus and just generally how lovely for them to be missioning around playing 🥰 Also 80s child and remember the roaming dogs and ubiquitous confusing white poo (finally know why/what is thanks to this thread)!
