What’s the most random thing you’ve done for your dog?

Old dog of mine had a bad reaction to his worming tablet and kept wanting to pace around at night.

So I slept outside with him so he could pace to his hearts content and find somewhere cool to lay.

When it started to rain, I took his doors but slept downstairs again so it wasn’t too hot for him upstairs.

I also used to push him in a dog pushchair as he had something wrong with his paws where the skin would wear away leaving open sores if he walked in concrete too long.

I had a much loved little westie. When she was in the car she couldn't see out of the window as she was so short. I had a thick piece of foam cut to the size of her seat. I then made a fluffy cover and embroidered her name on it. She could then watch the world go by out of the car window. My sons thought I had lost the plot.

@SunnyLobelia > Thoughts going out to you 😢.

LetsGoWithTheFlo · 01/06/2022 22:07

Recently my 14-year-old girl decided she doesn't want to eat from her bowl anymore. Instead, she wants to be fed by hand and now every evening she expects me to lay down on the ground with her to feed her her kibble piece by piece.

She is also the reason why I started watching youtube videos on how to manually express her anal glands.

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 01/06/2022 22:10

Sleep next to her as she's just had puppies and I want to make sure everyone's ok. I also give her bottled water in her dish and lift it in and out for her 🤣

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 01/06/2022 22:11

Who wouldn't want to sleep next to them 🤣

@LetsGoWithTheFlo

Ah that happened with my old boy. Hand fed raw beef & kibble every night, often while he reclined on the sofa like a Roman.

Pollywoddles · 01/06/2022 22:23

When my now departed ddog was getting on a bit she used to stay squatting for ages after a poo because she would have a little runny bit at the end. I always carried tissues to wipe her and she used to let me wipe and then run away really quickly as I’d she was embarrassed 😂

I carried out open squeak surgery on her favourite ducky more than once. We had a wing amputation at one stage too. I made that toy last 10 years and when it was too threadbare for her to play with I kept it safe and she was cremated with it.

I made her a massive layer cake for her 15th birthday complete with icing made from mashed potato and yoghurt. I’m so glad I did, it was her last birthday, I’m glad we made it special.

When our last dog was diagnosed with terminal cancer and we were told he had a few weeks to live, I promised him that I would make him his favourite ever thing, pancakes, every weekend for the rest of his life. He went on for another seven months. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to face making pancakes again.

Badger1970 · 01/06/2022 22:35

We had the grassy arse experience this morning......... our girl dog is a horror for doing it, and she will be trying to poo in the garden whimpering. DD shouted downstairs at me "Mum, go and sort her arse out" Hmm

My 2 are my absolute world. When I go up to bed at night, they come with me and lie on the bed until I fall asleep. Then they take themselves off downstairs into their beds in the kitchen. Never told them to do it, or trained them..... they're just magic.

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 01/06/2022 22:37

Last month I spent £60 on 100 pink flamingo rubber ducks for my younger dood Ted (2), because he loves playing with them in his 6ft hard edge paddling pool (another bonkers purchase), B&M stopped selling them last year & he’d just chewed the head of his last one & kept mournfully crying.

He’ll only get 3 x 5 packs a year; one for Christmas, his birthday, and the inaugural Day Of The Flamingo when his pool is cleaned & re-filled on the first warm weekend of the year.

I must also tuck the Flamingo of the Day into bed with him or he doesn’t settle.

His brother, nearly 11, is marginally more robust, but must be sung Under The Sea from The Little Mermaid before he has breakfast, or else he doesn’t eat it. Or Paint It Black.

They’ve both gone wrong.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 01/06/2022 22:48

I pick my dog up so he can watch the bin men out of the kitchen window. The bin men must think I'm completely mad 😂

MuchoMistrust · 01/06/2022 22:51

My dog hates it when I cough so I hold my cough in, run outside, close the door and cough outside, even if it's raining

Basilbrushgotfat · 01/06/2022 23:29

@MuchoMistrust you've just reminded me I used to leave the room to sneeze because my cat hated it 😆

I had a good giggle that this.

My lab loves those huge tennis balls and he usually has three on the go at a time. His gave, which is completely flat and burst so he can carry it around at will. The second is slightly flat so he can pick it up but it also rolls quite slowly. Then the third is the newer one which is perfect so he plays ball by himself, he rolls it with his nose or even kicks it, then runs after it.

But they were getting hard to find during the lock down times and dd and I went to a random shop and they had a whole net of them, bright pink and marked down to a silly price. So I bought them all 😂. We had a trollley overflowing with pink balls. Now he isn't allowed them until one of the 3 needs replacing, so I've had to store them 🙈. I didn't think of that bit when I bought them. So there are balls stashed all over the house.

But he does love it when a new one surfaces....

XelaM · 02/06/2022 08:45

This is the best thread on Mumsnet! Hands down 😀

@GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough Awwww so beautiful 😍

Thelikelylass · 02/06/2022 08:59

I'm in bed and just stroked my dog, kissed his head and said 'such' a good boy.

I then turned over and did exactly the same to my FWB as he stayed over last night.
Absolutely true.

Dog is number one here.

Soubriquet · 02/06/2022 12:25

I’m loving these

shows I’m not the only daft one when it comes to the pets

When our cat was diagnosed with cancer I decided we would have roast chicken every Sunday just so she could have some each week. We had roast chicken every Sunday for nine months..

What a lovely thread this is, great stories.

Our dog was spoiled rotten. He was a rescue from SE Asia, where I taught English. In class I'd hold up vocab cards and the kids would say the word, so I used a similar method to teach the dog all his meat words. I'd hold up a little bit of the meat, say the word a couple of times and then give it to him. He learned fast. In the end, I only had to say 'steak' and he'd salivate, but that was on days when we were actually having it. He also always had steak on his birthday.

Before shipping him back to the UK, I had to get him used to being in a crate for the journey and would get in there with him so he wouldn't be scared.

He also had a comfy bed and a water bowl in every room in the house.

Rodneytrotterslovechild · 03/06/2022 18:34

I’ve just found myself filling up the water filter and pouring it into the dogs water bowl
hes so precious,no nasty limescale is going near him
my cup of tea?
limescale only hurts the kettle…

Basilbrushgotfat · 03/06/2022 18:38

🤣

I've just been round closing all the windows and patio doors because next door's very civilised children's party is disturbing the cat🙄

Furrbabymama87 · 03/06/2022 18:38

Relieved my constipated puppy.

Soubriquet · 04/06/2022 08:33

I once bought a fountain type water bowl for my dogs because I thought running water would be better…

She actually didn’t care and I put myself though the weekly cleaning routine of this stupid fountain for a couple of months before I realised she didn’t care

Not my dogs - a family members, who used to pay me a handsome sum to dog sit (and I would have done it free, but wasn’t going to tell them that at 16!). He didn’t like to leave them for more than 30 mins due to their ages.

Two elderly Staffies, sisters, both 15, beautiful, soft, well trained.

I would sit on the sofa and within seconds would have a dogs head on each leg, I’d stroke them and they’d doze off. For HOURS. Numb legs? No problem. Really need to pee? TV remote out of reach? Tough. I’d sit there until they woke up.

Maybe not ridiculous, but I was 16 and barely able to sit still due to having ADHD, but I did it for them. I loved them.

@msssm @TheSpottedZebra @Basilbrushgotfat

For those who are interested, I have uploaded to YouTube a clip of my dog singing to one of his theme tunes (the other is Family Guy, he must have a thing for Seth MacFarlane). He gets a bit distracted at the end when my son comes downstairs.

I realise this may be identifying but I haven't posted anything too embarrassing under this name so Smile
