Old dog of mine had a bad reaction to his worming tablet and kept wanting to pace around at night.

So I slept outside with him so he could pace to his hearts content and find somewhere cool to lay.

When it started to rain, I took his doors but slept downstairs again so it wasn’t too hot for him upstairs.

I also used to push him in a dog pushchair as he had something wrong with his paws where the skin would wear away leaving open sores if he walked in concrete too long.

Had to pull a carrier bag out of my dogs ass when he was young Blush

used to leave its me or the dog on for him and his sister when we went out, and they used to watch an episode a day.

now he paces round upstairs all night scratching at doors to check everyone's still there, he's an old boy now. When he settles next to my bed he does a massive sigh, coughs into my dressing gown, sleeps, wakes, I let him out, he barks, doesn't pee, I bring him in and spend the rest of the night On the sofa with him so he doesn't have to face the stairs again.

When our boy became older and achey we had soft doughnut type beds all over the house and I would put extra padding underneath. I bought very nice ham or beef slices to put his Metacam and pills in. When we went out I would leave the TV on for him but only on programmes I thought he would like. Aww I miss him so much.

For those who are interested, I have uploaded to YouTube a clip of my dog singing to one of his theme tunes (the other is Family Guy, he must have a thing for Seth MacFarlane). He gets a bit distracted at the end when my son comes downstairs.

I realise this may be identifying but I haven't posted anything too embarrassing under this name so Smile

Awww this is amazing 🤩

I love this thread 😂

I changed my wedding venue because the place we’d picked didn’t allow dogs. He walked me down the aisle and jumped up on the pews at the end to get blessed. Managed not to eat any of his flowers or ribbons either.

I think if you own a dog you've pulled grass out it's bum at some point!

I spread his dog ham (perfectly good ham from Tesco but bought just for him) with cream cheese and wrap his tablet in it to get him to take it whilst saying "stop it's ham-a time" in MC Hammer style, even though DDog knows full well what's coming.

Regularly have a howl with him. He likes it and will try to get us to howl with him.

Slept on the sofa with him when he won't settle.

Drive him 30 minutes to his favourite groomer, despite there being plenty perfectly good ones on the way because he "loves Aunty Weffy"

DH will warm his food in the microwave to "take the chill off it" as he reckons when it's room temperature it hurts his old teeth and gums - DDog is 13.

Delay throwing next doors footballs back over as the banging on the fence scares him shitless

And finally, bought him ridiculously expensive fresh pork gravy from M&S at Christmas as he's allergic to chicken, Turkey, beef and lamb so he could have a proper Christmas dinner.

Imnotahippo · 01/06/2022 14:20

My son has a massive, tough as old boots staffie
ill never forget him having a wee outside (the dog,not my son!) when a blade of grass touched his Willy mid wee
he shot over to my son-piss splashing everywhere and my son got on his knees to console him and I heard the words ‘that nasty piece of grass…’

same dog can’t go anywhere without finding the biggest branch
my son can’t bear making him leave it behind so they are collecting an impressive collection in their back garden ‘just in case the dog wants them’ (he doesn’t)

we all buy him birthday and Christmas presents and he gets a special meal on those days

We've collected our dogs ashes from the vet this morning and this thread has cheered me up considerably. Thank you x

My old girl would get a bit hot in the garden during heatwaves. I would be forever trying to entice onto the cool grass in the shady part of the garden. I would then get a couple of wet tea towels and use those to help cool her down.

I also used to give her doggy massage on her arthritic knees and hips.

I’ve also run around the garden trying to catch her wee for the vet. I had to do it solo though.

This thread has made me laugh so much - especially ‘that nasty piece of grass…’

Glad it has cheered you up too stropalotopus83

I love this thread. Because I think I am bonkers sometimes, so I have found my crowd....😃

I have two big dogs and one is short haired so feels the cold. I live in a hot country so we aren't geared up for winter like Northern countries so we improvise at times. So Ddog 1 is a big gal and she grew out of her jersey, so I had used an old tshirt (conveniently cut to make it comfy) to keep her warm. I let her out for a wee in the morning, so she was still wearing it. Some people were walking past, and laughed at her wearing her fushia pink attire. I was so upset about it, that I went and bought her a new jersey the same morning. She did love that tshirt ensemble though, she would have this grin on when I had put it on her.

My old Labrador in his last few weeks wasn't very agile and battled to get up and down. So I got out a sleeping bag for him for him to lay on and then I could also use it to pull him around the house to where ever I was, as it was nice and slippy on the laminate floors. He would just lie there while we went from room to room. Then I cut a shopping bag to put under him when he stood up so I could grip the handles and help him along.

Ddog2 is on thyroid meds and has to have it squirted into his mouth first thing every morning. If I don't sing, he wont take it nicely. He just barks at me (granted sometimes it is very early so my thinking is to just get the meds into the dog). No, he will only approach me to let me give them to him after I have sang out

You're a big boy now
With a big boys needs
And a big boys dreams
Why don't you accept yourself
Accept your desires
And meet your needs
Deny your prooooooooooblemzz
(Have to emphasis the last bit).

Then he does his wiggle bum move and comes to me to get his syringe squirted in his mouth.

My dc think its hilarious as they don't need to go through this rigmarole with him, they just shove it in him lol....

I secretly love it though. It's our moment. Although at 5.30am there are some mornings I cut out a line or two.....

LightandMomentary · 01/06/2022 15:17

Warmed up the bed that we used in the boot of the car against the radiator, because it was a bit cold for him to use. No regrets.

Love love love these stories - laughing out loud!! Xx

CMOTDibbler · 01/06/2022 15:20

One of mine loves his humans to be safely in bed, so all of us will let him herd us to bed at intervals through the day, if you lie down he will get super excited, then run off to get a toy, tuck it in with you and then wander off in the knowledge of a job well done. You can then get out and resume normal service. If I'm working and don't have any meetings I will sometimes indulge him and work from bed which he adores as with no one else in the house he can fully relax in the knowledge no harm can come to me.
And not dog, but chicken. We buy digestive biscuits especially for the chickens, and green grapes, not red ones as one of them hates red grapes and gets very bent out of shape because the others do like them. She also likes to come in and sit on the sofa to share a snack

Early winter here, day temp around 17 degrees - 20…. Two elderly dogs who look mournfully at the log basket if the fire isn’t on during the day when they deem it is cold. I meekly put it on and escape the heat in the office and open the window.

they are both working/ utility breeds and not thin coated lapdogs… the Boxer happily pants/ roasts herself and will not come out of the sun or away from the fire, springer just likes heat, we humans are relegated to the back row.

we have a lot of hedgehogs ( ppl in NZ don’t like them but I’m a fan because they eat pests) Boxer learned after they came in the lounge one evening to associate with large helpings of pain, but she objects to the lovely critters ( garden isn’t big enough etc…. At 2 acres it definitely is) she whines, cries, howls at them, so I have to gently move them to ‘ their’ section of the garden the part I called the rewilded bit because I’m too bone idle to mow it so close to the stream. Boxer will not let me rest until they are moved …. I grumble that I’m not in a Harry Potter book de gnome ing the bloody garden…. She is so vocal I become worried our lovely neighbours will struggle to get their small children off to sleep ….. de hedgehogging indeed.

@PieonaBarm yep, my DH refuses for either dog to have anything that is fridge cold ( lies heavy on their stomach, they are pedigrees and they have more delicate stomach lining 🙄didn’t know DH was a vet) when they were puppies they had their puppy milk warmed and DH tested it thoroughly with his finger … was once caught giving them egg from the fridge… received a raised eyebrow …. He was ignored…

Nevercloser · 01/06/2022 16:21

Cosmo (reminds me of Cosmo Smallpiece, rip Les Dawson) thanks for that.
You’ve got one awesome dog.

Oh mines not that bad he'll feed him ham and cheese etc from the fridge, just his actual food he "takes the chill off" 😂

I’m so glad this is cheering some people up

My two current dogs love coffee but I don’t let them have it very often.

When I do though, I do them their own little bowl and I’ll make sure it’s the perfect temperature before they have it.

I don’t even like coffee!

When my dog had his balls removed he looked so down and sad with his giant inflatable collar round his neck I slept downstairs with him at 7 months pregnant, thinking we’d have a sofa each (he’s a large breed too) but he decided to sleep on the same one as me and hog the duvet , I lasted two nights before thinking he’d be just fine without me downstairs with him 😂.
He also gets a homemade doggy birthday cake every year.
Also due to his very wrinkly face he has a face wash every morning with a fresh flannel and warm water.

Cyberworrier · 01/06/2022 20:15

Lovely thread! Possibly the silliest thing I've done for dogs was sleep on a sofa with three dogs. I was looking after parents two dogs at my house overnight and the elderly one couldn't climb the stairs, so I slept downstairs to be with them and my dog. I ended up with a Labrador on my feet, a labradoodle by my middle and a staffie cross by my head, on a three seat sofa!
