Old dog of mine had a bad reaction to his worming tablet and kept wanting to pace around at night.

So I slept outside with him so he could pace to his hearts content and find somewhere cool to lay.

When it started to rain, I took his doors but slept downstairs again so it wasn’t too hot for him upstairs.

I also used to push him in a dog pushchair as he had something wrong with his paws where the skin would wear away leaving open sores if he walked in concrete too long.

Lovely thread

Had to have one of my darlings PTS in January - in the summer he used to love to lie in the sun for hours and hours. I used to let him sunbaths for about an hour and then pop a sun parasol over him incase he got sunstroke.

I crochet and had made him a blanket out of acrylic yarn. Started to make a blanket for a pregnant friend out of beautiful merino wool - he loved it so much I made him one (cost me an absolute fortune but he adored that blanket)

Rearranged the bedroom furniture so his bed was alongside the radiator but also in a spot that got sun in the afternoon.

Gosh I miss him

Hundreds of things for mine. Changed name as this is identifiable in real life. Eldest dog carries logs / no interest in sticks or balls just bloody great big logs - think tree trunks. Our standard walk in the woods is 4 miles - he lugs it 4 miles and then I heave it in the mini and drive it home and put it on the log pile. He cries if I won’t put it in the car. Once had a cyclist whip around a corner and I shouted be careful my dogs around the next corner and he’s got a stick - he was condescending and said ‘I think I can manage a poxy dog’ then disappeared two minutes later lots of swearing and he reappeared going that’s not a stick that’s a bloody entire tree.

I have more than one lab - no crate as they can unlock it from the inside.

they ask to the radio station when they get bored with it. We normally have a 2-5 minutes discussion in the morning over radio 2,4 or classic fm in the morning.

I could go on…..

Labpictures · 06/06/2022 20:00

to put in context he is 1/3 bigger than average lab and 37 kg - he’s a working lab

Labpictures · 06/06/2022 20:02

The longest stick was over 4 m long and he finds the centre of mass and just carries it - he’s done it since birth and being a small puppy and he is 9 now and still does it and won’t stop or settle for a small
stick

You are my DH's people. I love our old dog but he's on another level. When dog started struggling on our wooden stairs, he laid carpet just for her! Kids had been nagging for years as they can be quite slippery. There is an extra dog bed in bathroom so she has somewhere to lay while he's in the bath. Built a step for the bed for her but now she just makes this funny little noise to get up and he jumps up for her immediately.

Mushpup · 06/06/2022 20:16

What a heartwarming thread, you are my people!

My current dog was given up by her family & in the 1st year she'd sometimes howl in her sleep (she was in kennels for a month inbetween homes so think she got lonely). She sleeps on my bed I started to reach over, cradle her head & stroke her & whisper in her ears 'you're a beautiful little girl'. It always helped. Sometimes she'd wake up wagging & other times she'd stay asleep but no more sad dreams.

As she eats long grass as a recreational sport we do have to regularly do the magician's 'pulling a line of flags from the bum' trick though 😂 If any bit of grass, long hair or green bean remains partially poking out she'll race around the garden/park like it's biting her on the backside. Cue me running after her with poobag & tissue to make it all ok again.

My previous pup used to insist on prompt bedtimes, if i stayed up late to watch a film she would sit in front of me & stare very loudly. If i dared ignore this, the huffing would start. She rarely barked so once it got to the single bark stage I knew I had to give in & both of us would go upstairs where I'd help lift her onto my bed. She gave me regular grooming lick baths too - pinning down an arm or leg & 'clean' it. I miss her & all my former pups so much, so it's great to have this one to now look after.

I need to worm my old dog but am worried about a reaction now. Is it quite common ?

Mrsjayy · 06/06/2022 21:29

Late jaydog used to throw his bedding about and would stand and stare at it till I made it for him ! Used to share a blackberry yoghurt with him because they were his favourite im not so keen

Labpictures · 06/06/2022 21:32

also mine get stroppy with anyone who dares have a bath.so we have to get out on a stand there drying whilst they lick our ankles and bare legs until we smell more ‘dog like’

they Like to drink warm water in the winter and cool in the summer so we heat their water slightly in the microwave when it’s really cold and it goes in the fridge and rotated bowl in to cool and bowl of cool water down.

they also get birthday presents and cake

they of course all sleep on the bed under their own blanket.

two of them pull the blanket up and over their heads to go to sleep in the dark

no one is ever left alone when Ill even before we know it - they literally will not leave that child - eg son comes home from school and looks fine. Dog sits on his feet, under his chair and then goes on his bed etc - next morning son has temperature etc and again the dog ‘looking after’ that patient won’t move or go for walks etc

oh and they watch Wimbledon all summer left on the tv for them and they sit and watch it all together on the sofa

😂 I would love to meet your ddog on a walk. These pictures made me laugh. He must have Jaws of steel.

What is it with Labradors and having to pick something up? Whenever I call my boy, to come inside, he can't just come. He has to find something to pick up first to bring with him. It doesn't matter what it is, just whatever he can find that be can pick up quick before he thinks I'll change my mind and close the door. His beloved ball (mentioned uothread), but sometimes he feels that's taking a bit long as he found the inflated ball which he can't pick up, a blanket, quite often he will grab the pool thermometer if it's close enough to the side, cushion, just anything he can get hold of. This morning he grabbed his sister's jersey (it's super cold here) so she wasnt overly impressed.

Speaking of the jersey. His sister ddog1 she is the boss dog and as loving as she is, gets a bit fed up with him. He does have a bubbly personality so I get where she is coming from because at times he does get a bit ott with enthusiasm. But lab boy ddog2 isn't allowed to wear a jersey nor collar on her watch. No, this is only allowed on queen bee herself. If I put either on ddog2 she will have it off him within minutes. So I have given up buying collars for him as they aren't cheap and she fully believes it needs taking off him, and then also destroyed. So he only has a collar on when he walks. If I don't take it off him right away, it will be a gonner. So his jersey is an old towel which so far she approves of, but he shouldn't attempt to lie on her jersey if it's laying on a bed. No no, she gets mighty upset.

Ddog1 isn't speaking to me this morning. She is holding a grudge as last night I threw a treat and she missed hers and it rolled under the coach. Of course ddog 2 being a Lab sniffed that out in seconds and got it, but that didn't fly with her. She growled at him for finding her treat, so I raised my voice at her. Oh boy, am I paying the price now. Got the sitting with her back to me and the whole shabang. She has had her breakfast now, so I'm sure we will be best pals again soon. I did put a bit of gravy in her breakfast though as I'm a sucker for those woe is me eyes.....

No. My dog was just allergic to many things and had a reaction to that particular wormer which was drontal. I gave him panacur after that and he was fine

Love this thread! Our first dog used to bring home tree branches too. Foolish chap. He also used to bark if we got separated on a walk ( thunk kids running ahead a bit).
current old boy who is very very near his end I flew home from France to look after him when he got ill when we were away. I also have slept downstairs with him and all of us have at times done the same. When I had chemo he was glued to my side at home, and when DD became sick ( she is now bed bound) he would cry at the bottom of the stairs because she was apart from him. When she came home from hospital after 4 months away he came into the ambulance and sang to her. Now we are just on watch for him each day hoping he will be still here tomorrow.
new dog is very anxious and nervous although super fab and often lies on DDs bed all spray when she is extra unwell.

all of you will know there's no one better to dry your tears than a dog.

userxx · 07/06/2022 08:16

I tried to watch 'Buried' but something about the heavy breathing noises at the start upset my dog so I turned it off. I still haven't seen it.

Several times a day our dog asks to sing. He sings along to two theme tunes and only those two, which I put on from YouTube. If I ignore his pawing and whining he will stand in front of the tv staring at the screen waiting. Sometimes we walk in the front room and the tv's off but he's standing there staring at the tv, waiting for his tunes to magically come on.

This has made me cry. Not sure why but I think it is the cutest thing. Have ever heard. 🥹

WeddingBella · 07/06/2022 20:34

Cancelled a trip abroad and hired a campervan to holiday in instead, just so we could take ddog with us.
In our defence, he was diagnosed with cancer and we were told it would likely be his last summer.
18 months later he's still going!

We soak all biscuits because he lost a lot of teeth.
I make him a hot water bottle when I have one / if he looks cold.
When he was ill I stayed downstairs with him all night. He ended up sleeping on my shoulder, like he did as a puppy.

My favourite is my mum though. She doesn't like dogs but insists I bring him with me when I go to her house, purely so she can sit him on a cushion in the kitchen and talk / sing to him while she's feeding him cooking before sending him to find treats that she hides before we get there 😂

PistachiokindaBear · 08/06/2022 11:01

My dog literally sleeps in a baby crib so he can be next to me at all times. He's the most intense, neediest thing ever but I wouldn't change him for the world.

LadyLothbrook · 08/06/2022 12:02

CMOTDibbler · 01/06/2022 15:20

One of mine loves his humans to be safely in bed, so all of us will let him herd us to bed at intervals through the day, if you lie down he will get super excited, then run off to get a toy, tuck it in with you and then wander off in the knowledge of a job well done. You can then get out and resume normal service. If I'm working and don't have any meetings I will sometimes indulge him and work from bed which he adores as with no one else in the house he can fully relax in the knowledge no harm can come to me.
And not dog, but chicken. We buy digestive biscuits especially for the chickens, and green grapes, not red ones as one of them hates red grapes and gets very bent out of shape because the others do like them. She also likes to come in and sit on the sofa to share a snack

That's just sent me into joy euphoria, you're living in an Beatrix Potter land.

My girl was scared of the fireworks so I cut up a pair of my lovely fluffy socks and made her some ear muffs. She looked sweet (and absolutely ridiculous) but it did help a bit.

alloalloallo · 08/06/2022 13:03

This is so lovely

My old boy had cushings and his last summer he struggled with the heat and wanted to be outside all the time.

We pitched a tent out in the garden and slept out there with him.

One of the side effects of his cushings was chronic insomnia so he’d be up and about super early.

I grumbled about it at the time, but looking back I’m so happy we had that time together, quiet and peaceful, watching the sun come up, listening to the birds, 5am walks on the beach

Soubriquet · 08/06/2022 13:04

Oh allo that sounds so lovely

im glad you got to spend some quality time with your boy like that

Everyone who comes to our house is required to put their phones on silent as youngest DDog is upset by alert pings. We even had to stop watching a tv show as it featured messages on the screen along with the pings. 😂

But on this thread that makes me a lightweight.

Oh! I do sometimes hand feed oldest DDog raw tripe if he's being picky & Im worried he's not eating enough. That stuff stinks!!!

Soubriquet · 08/06/2022 13:50

You’ve got a stomach of steel to do that.

I adore my dogs but even I draw the line at raw tripe Envy
