Dressing dogs up

Always hated dressing up dogs, ridiculous.
Understand it for very young, very old, or unwell. Or the thin coated like whippets/greyhounds, when very cold.
Every day adult dogs, just no. If you really want to spend more money on your dog, why dont you donate to rescue, for dogs in need.

My dogs wear a coat on walks when the temperature drops to about 4/5 degrees. They shiver without and don’t enjoy their walks. One refuses to go out. No clothes other than that though. Our house is warm so they’re fine and they’re not accessories to dress up.

We have had to use surgical suits, when they’ve had operations and they’re not thathappy in them but they’ve been necessary and less distressing than a cone. When I’ve been able to sit with them and make sure they’re not messing with the wound/stitches I have always took it off to give them a break.

@LaurieFairyCake
Nope. It's not even a cute photo showing your dog "smiling/laughing"
You see a 'cute outfit', your dog sees and feels something uncomfortable and annoying being placed on him.Hmm

It's not exactly up there with distressing animal cruelty, but it's just stupid.

XelaM · 22/12/2021 14:28

@LaurieFairyCake awwww we have a black pug too!!! Yours looks absolutely adorable in the elf outfit!!

Some dogs really don't care. Especially if it's a child doing it who is their little playmate.

I used to dress our dog up as a child. He didn't mind it. Would hold out his paws to let me put socks on him and put his head through the shirt if I held it out.

I used to put scrunchies on his tail, sunglasses on him and all sorts. I used to sit and feed him from his bowl with a spoon. Most patient and loving dog I've ever met.

ChristmasRobins · 22/12/2021 14:35

My whippet has a coat which he loves- when it’s time for a walk he goes and gets it from the shelf Grin He hates anything on his head though.

I think you need to allow that other people know their own dogs. Some of them like a coat, others don’t and others don’t care either way.

LaurieFairyCake · 22/12/2021 14:35

All the pugs 🥰 so adorable 🥰

Came for the photos of dogs dressed up, slightly disappointed.

I find the Birmingham Mail have really clickbait headlines and sensationalist journalism. My phone is always recommending their articles because I've fallen for a few in the past.

magicstar1 · 22/12/2021 14:53

There was a whole thread about this less than two weeks ago

We have a turkey hat that we plan to put on our cockapoo. 2 mortal sins neatly tied up in one sentence - the dog and I don't care.

Grimchmas · 22/12/2021 17:04

Oh @Cherrypies

I'm pretty sure the only person being overly dramatic around here is you Xmas Wink

Veterinari · 22/12/2021 18:25

@LaurieFairyCake

Bollocks

He was dead happy in the jumper as he was cold - he's always trying to get under rugs and blankets

And the hat was on for 20 seconds while I took that photo (for the rescues calendar 🤦‍♀️)

So why not leave the hat on if he loves it so much?

We both know you're just doing it for the 'likes'

I alway think it's a bit sad when pet owners are willing to make their pets uncomfortable so they can show off on social media

Veterinari · 22/12/2021 18:29

@Tal45

Some horses don't like a saddle at first but I don't see you complaining about people putting saddles on horses and how cruel that is and how it's not for the horse's benefit.
@Tal45 Surely unnecessary rugging would be a better analogy? And yes you do see welfare charities challenging it,as unnecessary rugging has be shown to be a problem for equine welfare.

www.horseandhound.co.uk/news/unnecessary-rugging-compromise-equine-welfare-study-finds-670457/amp

Why do you think unnecessarily dressing up dogs would be any different ?

Veterinari · 22/12/2021 18:32

Interesting how it's the brachy owners who are also focussed on dressing up their dogs.

It's almost as if you'd prioritise looks over welfare... oh wait!

liveforsummer · 22/12/2021 18:46

Well my terrier loves a jumper, I mean she can't tell me but at home she spends most of her time curled under my 15 tog duvet and out on walks she's fine when moving fast but on slower walks or where we need to hang about for a bit she's far less hunched and shivery if wearing a coat.

Impossible to compare to horses though, their physiology, metabolisms and general way of being alive it totally different so over digging of horses is an entirely different issue. Also can't compare dog coats to saddles. We need horses to accept saddles/bridles to fulfil the need we own them for and the equivalent with dogs is a lead or harnesses. Most domestic dogs cannot be off lead at all times, in order to walk them where it's convenient and practical for us so we need to lead/harness train whether they like it at first or not

What makes you think I'm doing it for 'likes' ? (No Facebook or Instagram here)

When I said it was for the RESCUES CALENDAR Hmm

How dare you be so rude and make assumptions

LaurieFairyCake · 22/12/2021 19:42

prioritise looks over welfare

He's a RESCUE ! He can't help being a pug abandoned in a town centre

Yes I saw that. You aren't the only person in the thread posting photos of brachycephalic dogs looking scared whilst inappropriately dressed though are you?

Personally I prefer not to make my rescued dogs anxious.

Ah so promoting stressed dogs in clothes Brilliant

Your rescue might want to review 3.3.4 and 5.1 if this guidance document

A thread two weeks ago, and your point is what?
So sorry, I don't check every single thread, to make sure it was not done previously.
Got an idea, you could always think, that's been done before, will just scroll on by.
