Dressing dogs up

Always hated dressing up dogs, ridiculous.
Understand it for very young, very old, or unwell. Or the thin coated like whippets/greyhounds, when very cold.
Every day adult dogs, just no. If you really want to spend more money on your dog, why dont you donate to rescue, for dogs in need.

Our previous ddog had a jumper. Would any rotty owners risk life and limb manhandling 8 stone into an unwelcome garment do you reckon?.

XelaM · 22/12/2021 21:18

Our dog is not anxious whatsoever. He is an extremely confident and very loving dog who loves warmth and spends his days napping on the electric blanket. He is single-coated and likes to be warm

Well thank goodness for pumpkin costumes then! ConfusedHmm

Can owners on this thread genuinely not see how tense their posed dogs in seasonal outfits look? Confused
Cherrypies · 22/12/2021 21:46

@Veterinari

I honestly don't think they do, because they project their thoughts 'oh my dog looks soooo cutie,wuti in his bit of tat'
Therefore he loves it, just like I do, that the dog might be uncomfortable does not enter their heads.
Will no doubt be shot down in flames for this, but as a few have problems understanding what I actually said in the first place about understanding about, very young, very old, unwell, thin coated, that's just the way it is.

A thread two weeks ago, and your point is what?
So sorry, I don't check every single thread, to make sure it was not done previously.
Got an idea, you could always think, that's been done before, will just scroll on by.[/quote]
Are you ok? That was quite an angry response to a harmless comment. Really possible the poster was showing you in case you wanted a read, as it's obviously something you're interested in.

Cherrypies · 22/12/2021 23:34

@ReeseWitherfork

Of course I am ok, if indeed that was a serious question.
Not angry one little bit - cheers!

@Cherrypies Caring about dogs is great, but you seem to have forgotten how to communicate with humans properly. Nobody is going to read your posts and think “that’s it, I’m burning all of the accessories I bought my dog because an angry random on the internet thinks I’m stupid”.

Cherrypies · 23/12/2021 00:26

@iBrows

Don't know why anyone thinks I am angry. Forgotten how to communicate with humans, how so? I do it everyday in my line of work, no such complaints, so far, in the 40 years or so of communication with clients and coworkers alike.
Just expressed an opinion on an article I read, on a forum designed for that, if your comment was meant as a 'dig', sorry don't play that game, not in the playground anymore.
As for burning accessories, don't recall suggesting that, maybe you could point it out?
As for the stupid comment, also don't recall saying that either, what I did say, and still say is that I don't agree with dressing up dogs or indeed cats with tat, for amusement.
Of course, you are also a random on the internet.

Hmm - you don't know that that's because of the outfits though - IME lots of dogs look tense when they're sitting for photos as their eyes and focus are on the treats behind the camera.

My impression is that a lot of respondents on this thread didn't bother to read the OP properly - hence random posts about cold dogs and links to a thread about appropriate coats for dogs when that's clearly not what the OP was referring to

It's easier to try and dismiss someone you disagree with by the whole 'you seem angry/upset/faux concern' than to construct a rationale argument or actually admit that yes dressing up dogs is often done for human amusement even when there's stress caused to the dog. It's uncomfortable for people who love their dogs to admit that sometimes they use them for amusement even if the dog doesn't like it.

Dogs anticipating treats don't generally look tense like that. They look expectant and hopeful

This is just a thread of uncomfortable looking dogs dressed up and posed by their owners
For what exactly?

icedcoffees · 23/12/2021 07:28

This is just a thread of uncomfortable looking dogs dressed up and posed by their owners For what exactly?

Because they want to.
For fun.
Because it makes people smile.

Not everything to do with animals has to be done because it's scientifically good for them. Most dogs are quite happy to wear a silly hat or a cute outfit for a few minutes if it means they get a treat.

Are they necessarily over the moon about it? No, but equally it's not hurting them in any way.

This thread is just an excuse to jump on people who buy what OP considers "tat" for their dogs - of course if you attack people like that they're going to jump and defend themselves.

oreosoreosoreos · 23/12/2021 07:39

Pic of DDog currently looking very anxious in her Xmas jumper Hmm

She’s 12, had a trim yesterday and feels the cold. She’d need some kind of jumper at this time of year after a trim, so why not a festive one?

She also has a non-festive jumper and 2 practical coats (one thicker than the other). I know she doesn’t mind wearing them, because she doesn’t try to take them off!

I did try these bootie things one year (actually on the advice of the vet, she’s a fluffy dog and the snow can get impacted around their paws), which she immediately took off!

Interesting how you think dogs looking tense are simultaneously 'quite happy' and 'not over the moon'. Cognitive dissonance I guess.

You're right though it is for the owners benefit. As is breeding dogs who can't breathe or can barely walk. Or cutting off ears and tails to change how they look. That only takes a few minutes too.

The objection is because whilst we promote dogs as accessories who's feelings can be dismissed to prioritise human preferences for how they look, we'll continue to cause them significant welfare problems.

To meet a dog's welfare needs it's important that we recognise them as dogs with the behavioural and physical needs that dogs have. Not accessories to be trapped in deformed bodies and clothed in seasonal outfits just so folk can get a 'cute' photo

Indoctro · 23/12/2021 07:42

My staffs puppy who is 11 months, crumbles in a heap at the door if I try to take him out with no coat on if it's raining or snowing. He most definitely likes a jacket on.

Well - considering they mean different things, of course I can think both at the same time. Quite happy (to me anyway) means they're tolerating it and aren't showing any major signs of stress - yes, they might not look ecstatic but most dogs don't look ecstatic in posed photos anyway, whether they're wearing outfits or not.

You're right though it is for the owners benefit. As is breeding dogs who can't breathe or can barely walk. Or cutting off ears and tails to change how they look. That only takes a few minutes too.

Are you really comparing poor breeding and deliberately deforming animals to owners putting their pup in a pumpkin outfit for a cute photo, just because they both take the same amount of time?Confused

No I'm not comparing them. If you read my entire post where I give the context then you can see that.

Easier to edit out the inconvenient bits so that you can more easily miss the point though I suppose Confused

@Cherrypies you said:

“I honestly don't think they do, because they project their thoughts 'oh my dog looks soooo cutie,wuti in his bit of tat'” - you are clearly trying to make people sound stupid if they put a coat on a dog. It’s a weird assumption to make. Literally creating a narrative out of thin air.

You DO sound angry, that’s why people are saying it.

I am going to put my dog’s jumper on for a walk now - call the rspca Xmas Grin

Might be worth actually reading the OP

Sausagis · 23/12/2021 08:35

I hope you keep your feeling to yourself?

I had abuse screamed at me while walking my dog with socks on.

He had a medical condition and the vet said he would have to amputate his toes. I found a possible fix online - and cleared it with my vet - but we couldn't get the necessary dog booties to fit his odd feet so improvised with baby socks.

It worked Grin feet saved, completely healed. But those kids screaming at me about how I'm abusive and shouldn't dress up my dog can go to fuck.
