My instant thought was pretty much any sighthound, particularly Afghans, Salukis, Borzois and Podencos. Any/every Lurcher we see draws my attention. To me there’s nothing more beautiful than a sighthound in full-flight. Having read through the thread though I have realised I am a sucker for so many different breeds:
- Good strong, old-fashioned, square-set, long-coat GSDs. My first ever rescue was one and she was perfect in every way. Sadly they are like hen’s teeth these days, but we do have one locally and she is a stunner.
- Bernese Mountain Dog - came so close to having one in the late 90’s having researched the breed and breeders and been in regular contact with a breeder who was happy for me to have one of their pups. We had waited for a couple of years and were up next on their waiting list - only for a crossbreed rescue pup to find her way to me just before, so she came home instead. Didn’t regret it for a minute, she was an amazing dog.
- Gordon Setters - used to know a breeder and they are the most beautiful elegant looking dogs, with a completely contradictory goofball, loopy personality behind their glamour.
- Irish Setter - my grandparents had one that helped teach me to walk! Beautiful, sweet natured girl.
Irish Water Spaniel - almost never see these anymore. My grandparents had one after they lost their setter and he was the most loving, affectionate, loyal boy.
- Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier - the only pedigree dog we’ve ever bought, an awesome girl, still missed every day and it’s been over a decade since we lost her.
- Dandie Dinmont - can’t resist their cute faces, with their huge eyes!
The list goes on and on and includes gorgeous cross and mixed breeds. We live 30 seconds from the park entrance, so there is a constant parade of dogs past our front window and I get to see all manner of different breeds on a daily basis.
My particular favourites these days are oldies of any variety, absolutely love them to bits and always want to hear their life stories, if their humans are up for a chat.
I would also be ridiculously excited to meet one of my next breed, English Toy Terrier, out and about. Our getting a pup will have been years in the planning by the time it happens and although it is a big departure from the type of dogs we’ve had before, I am absolutely smitten with them.
