Sympathies to those with restless away from home dogs. I was horribly reminded of going away to France with two babies...

tizwozliz · 27/10/2021 20:49

@LadyCatStark - guess I should be thankful Ada only eats the cow pats, no washing required.

@GumsAndTeeth We had the patio doors open nearly all the time which is meant to be a big no no for toilet training but toilet training was a breeze. I'm not sure whether you can even call it training tbh. Pup was in a crate overnight so always let us know so can't help there

GumsAndTeeth · 27/10/2021 21:00

@tizwozliz I’ve heard it’s a no no before but it works for us and has done with our other dogs and with a toddler it’s just easier. We did the taking her out for the first week and she got it pretty quickly and now I don’t need to escort her. Sometimes if it’s raining or really cold I close the door and then take her out every 30-40 minutes and she will go but not routinely, it’s normally open. She’s 14 weeks and hasn’t had any accidents in around 3 weeks aside from overnight.

I’m hoping as she gets older and older there will just be no need and I can take the pads away. We crate her if we go out to teach her to hold it and she always has. But aside from 1 day a week she is never left more than 1/1.5 hours. Tonight was the first time over that at 1 hour 45 and she was golden.

In many years of dog ownership, I’ve definitely learned that there is never one method that works for every dog. It’s very similar to raising children in that respect. There are a variety of reasonable approaches to house training a puppy, just as there are for toilet training a toddler. What works for one puppy (or child) won’t necessarily work for others. They are individuals, after all.

GuyFawkesDay · 27/10/2021 22:21

They also seem to have their own little way of doing things too: you rarely get one who sleeps well, trains well, behaves, travels easily. Same person training, same methods, different results with different dog.

I mean mine travels like a dream. Behaves...hmm.....yeah typical spaniel puppy on that he's basically a bitey black kangaroo about 50% of the time. Other 50% he's angelic. Sleep....let's not go there. Still doesn't settle in crate after the early morning bog trip. Still whines when I leave.

My kids are like chalk and cheese too 🤷‍♀️

LadyCatStark · 27/10/2021 22:23

@tizwozliz he’s dreadful for rolling in poo! I only had to bath him on Monday before we went away as he rolled in fox poo ffs.

@Goawayangryman it’s literally like going away with a baby! I had to take as much stuff for him too 😂.

GuyFawkesDay · 27/10/2021 22:29

Me too!! Madness. Top 4 puppy pen panels and the little sod jumped out this morning. Casual as you like. So that was a total waste of time.

That said I left him with my parents and no fuss or whining so that was a huge surprise. He's followed my dad round like a shadow!

GuyFawkesDay · 27/10/2021 22:31

Took, not top 🙈

Dumplingpud · 27/10/2021 23:00

I’ve spoken to a friend and they are going to ask around and suggested I ask the vet if they have any recommendations.

The crate has come put her bed in, breeder had told us she was used to crates and pup has decided that nope she isn’t too keen the bottom shelf of the tv stand is a much better. I’m currently sat on the floor next to crate with her led next to me with her head on my leg. It’s the first time time she’s sat with me and put her head straight on me. It’s definitely making the numb rear end worth it. 😁

tizwozliz · 28/10/2021 07:51

Someone's had their garden privileges revoked this morning!

Awww, Doggo brought you flowers! 😆

Mine has dug a lovely miniature mine in one flower bed.

GuyFawkesDay · 28/10/2021 08:42

Oh my word. FawkesPup slept in til 7!! Woke but went back to sleep at 5 when I got up to the loo. This has never happened before without me taking him to the toilet at least once in the night. Hoping it's not a one off!!

He's woken full of beans and really cutely happy today and is currently throwing s piece of paddywhack round the living room and jlong on it.

Hello to the gorgeous new puppies and owners!! This is my pup on his first beach visit this week

Three guesses where my pup is now sleeping

GuyFawkesDay · 28/10/2021 09:03

Oh @cheeseisthebest with that little face anywhere pup prefers! What a sweetheart. Mine is having his 9am nap on my lap at the moment. It's bliss having a week off!

What a life. Get up, eat, go to loo, play, chew some dead stuff and then have a nice nap.

BaconAndAvocado · 28/10/2021 09:50

On our way gone a day early from our "week" in the New Forest.
Missing Newboy too much to stay another day.

According to his hosts (my parents) he's had a marvellous time. Mum cooked chicken for him which he gollloped up.
He's not not done a number 2 in the night (please let it not be a fluke!)

We found the most amazing pet shop in Romsey and have bought him some delectable treats. I did have to draw the line at rabbit ears....with fur 🤢

Can't wait to see his beautiful face and give him a huge cuddle!!
3 hours drive to go.....

Camper82 · 28/10/2021 10:23

Can I join please? Our cocker spaniel pup is 13 weeks now. Sleeps ok in his crate 10-4 when he needs to go outside, then back in the crate until 5.30/6.

He’s started chewing the furniture yesterday, so working at discouraging that…

He had his vaccinations yesterday too, and vet recommended kennel cough as it’s so prevalent at the minute. But that means no mixing with unvaccinated dogs (most!) for a few weeks.

When we got home from there I trapped his paw in the door Sad he really cried but was walking around ok. Then he cried again this morning, but has been running and jumping since. Waiting for him to wake from his nap so I can see how he is and maybe call the vet.

We’re staring puppy classes at the end of November, but have been doing some bits from an app and watching some YouTube videos of Steve Mann.

GuyFawkesDay · 28/10/2021 10:30

Oh what a cutie @Camper82!!

@BaconAndAvocado mine loves the fur on rabbits ears. I'm not squeamish but they are a bit grim! They didn't have the plain ones in the shop and rabbit ears one of the good non sloppy poo making treats so I do buy them.

I need to buy FawkesPup a new collar. His "puppy" XS one is on the last hole so time to move up to one that'll last a long time. Going for a classic leather (wipe clean 😆) one.

Ooh and I bought some Bareback boots for walks 🥳

Camper82 · 28/10/2021 10:32

We tried a furry rabbit ear last week, he was sick fur after it and it really put me off. He loved the bull pizzle we tried though. I’m finding lots of things a bit grim, but the rabbit ear was the worst!

BaconAndAvocado · 28/10/2021 10:37

Camper82 beautiful pup!
GuyFawkesDay are you pleased with your boots?
I'd like to get some waterproof walking boots for the winter months but have no idea where to start!

Goawayangryman · 28/10/2021 11:09

Rabbit ears very popular in this house.

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 28/10/2021 11:14

^What a life. Get up, eat, go to loo, play, chew some dead stuff and then have a nice nap" what a funny way to spend your week off @GuyFawkesDay.

Nice new pups. Big pup had me up in the night twice....again poo and wee and straight back to bed so I feel he needs his nightly toilet visit but bit fed up. I then walked him at 6.30am and a really long wee and another poo

I do like the early morning beach though

MsAwesomeDragon · 28/10/2021 11:32

AwesomePup had a lovely walk this morning. We were out for 2 hours, which is too long for him really but it was mostly off lead in the woods and it's rare we stay out that long. He found a new best friend, a one year old black lab who was happy to play and chase with him. He's now zonked on the sofa looking utterly exhausted.

tizwozliz · 28/10/2021 11:35

That looks like a good collar @MakeMeCleanTheHouse

I bought one and whilst it's perfectly fine illumination wise, the clasp is really fiddly and I think one day I'm not going to be able to get it off without resorting to scissors.

Cute pup @Camper82 , I love the melting into the floor look

I've enjoyed a week of full night sleeps now, the price for this is pup in the bed. Although she's a fairly considerate bed sharer. We've been going up at 9/9:30 watching something in bed and she sleeps through until 7

tizwozliz · 28/10/2021 11:35

Ada still hasn't found any friends :-(

MsAwesomeDragon · 28/10/2021 11:45

@tizwozliz

Ada still hasn't found any friends :-(
I'm sure she will. It just takes time, and going on walks at a time and place where there are likely to be other dogs around. That's not something I often get to do though. Pup does think that all dogs are brilliant and they will all want to be his friend though, which I'm attempting to train him out of, but then the dogs he is allowed to meet ARE all delighted to play with him and his world view is reinforced 🤷

We've got a light up collar for AwesomePup, but the clasp was really loose, and he managed to lose it in some undergrowth 😢 even though it was on and flashing I could not find it anywhere.
