The foghorn is sounding frequently and I suspect that's why I'm up enjoying the ambience of a foggy garden at 4am.

Hoping @BaconandAvocado is fast asleep and all the others with wide awake pups.

Thanks tizwozliz I've just ordered an ostrich bone on line 👍🏻
Will have a look at JR.

ilovesushi · 28/09/2021 20:50

Not tried ostrich bones on sushipup yet. They look amazing and like they will last for ages! Not cheap though!

LadyCatStark · 28/09/2021 20:52

@sandwiches77 yes! It was a nightmare getting Billy to walk off our street. Once he got off he was fine but he never wanted to leave. It’s only really this month (he’s just turned 6 months) that he’s stopped doing that. We bribed him with Primula which worked. He did nice sit down in the field like a toddler who doesn’t want to get out of the swimming pool but that was quite funny!

sandwiches77 · 28/09/2021 21:25

Thanks GuyFawkesDay no Dobies near me but I'll look at JR when DH stops complaining about me spending money on sandwichpup Hmm....

How does bribing with primula work LadyCatStark on walk work? I throw treats in front of sandwichpup to keep him moving....

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 28/09/2021 22:46

I started using primula this week and just walked with it hanging down and giving him a tiny squeeze every few steps.

Two ostrich bones ordered for our two. I shall bring them out on special occasions =when I'm utterly exhausted and need them to leave me alone. What's the equivalent for family members?

LadyCatStark · 28/09/2021 22:54

@sandwiches77 he just loves it! I hold the tube by my leg and just squeeze a tiny bit at a time into his mouth when he’s walking by my side.

GuyFawkesDay · 28/09/2021 23:02

Exactly same for primula based walking here, and he loves it so much he voluntarily walks by my left leg, looking for it. Mine is definitely one for stomach based bribery positive reinforcement aka total gannet.

Have also found the more excited and stupidly overenthusiastic I am, the better he responds. His recall has improved no end this week because I got nuts when he does it, as well as giving the cheese. Maybe the annoyingly children's TV presenter trainers that do the "sexier than a squirrel" thing are right....

On a different note, FawkesPup killed and ate a big spider tonight. I'm partly grateful and partly horrified!!!

cheeseisthebest · 29/09/2021 07:34

Do the ostrich bones smell?
I've ordered a big box of puppy chewy treats but DH moaning about smelly chews!
I've tried the primula walking but it's hard when he's so small!

tizwozliz · 29/09/2021 07:39

The ostrich bones do have a mild smell but it's not very offensive imo, reminds me of bacon. Not like some of the beef twists etc.

Returnoftheowl · 29/09/2021 07:56

I haven't noticed an ostrich bone smell. The worst I've found for smell so far is "beef jerky" dog treats, they reek!

MsAwesomeDragon · 29/09/2021 08:03

The ostrich bone is one of the least offensive smells from a chew I think. AwesomePup adores his bone, and spent a good long time chewing it yesterday, then it was the first thing he wanted this morning.

BaconAndAvocado · 29/09/2021 09:08

Klaxon!!!
I got 8 hours of straight, uninterrupted, blissful sleep last night!!!!!

But I came down at 6:30 to find 3 smelly gifts on the kitchen floor. 2 solid and 1 liquid.
The Puppy Lords giveth and they taketh away......

567and · 29/09/2021 12:28

That’s brilliant @BaconAndAvocado I’d take that as a win!

Anyone with a spaniel know what their weight was at around 13 weeks? Pup is 7.5 kg (will be 12 weeks on Friday) and the online calculator said he was underweight. But he doesn’t look it I don’t think. He would definitely eat more I’d I let him, but I don’t want to over feed him, especially as we need the margarine for treats for training and when we are out on walks.

I think I’m going to nip to our local dobbies and get some chews and bones too! He loves the beef bladder sticks but I send him out to the garden to have it as they stink! 😂

ashmts · 29/09/2021 12:58

@BaconAndAvocado Sounds like he's not quite ready to go the whole night yet. What happened to setting alarms overnight?

@567and I can't remember but mine was 9kg at 6.5 months so that doesn't sounds underweight to me. What does the vet think? The online things are just a general guide, I expected my girl to be petite as her mum was a small adult.

Jinnybean · 29/09/2021 13:00

Iv ended up bringing pup to sleep with us! I was getting up 3/4 times a night with her, last night she slept from 12( when I bought her up ) ubt 5 and then back until 7!

BaconAndAvocado · 29/09/2021 13:14

ashmts I completely forgot to set the alarms last night!!!
The eight hours were sooo good though and kinda worth the kitchen floor gifts 😂

Jinnybean is your pup sleeping in your bed with you or sleeping n a basket/bed in your bedroom?
I'm so tempted to have Newboy in our room but DH doesn't want that.

567and · 29/09/2021 14:12

Thanks @ashmts he doesn’t seem underweight to me, but DH said may be his ribs were a bit too lean and sunny anted to up the food. The vet said at his last check that we could give him a bit more food, which we have and he’s definitely grown in the last few weeks. He’s active enough and doesn’t seem on the brink of starvation so I might just carry on and slowly up as we head forwards 4 months.

567and · 29/09/2021 14:14

Gah, spelling mistakes!
Should read-
*DH said may be his ribs were a bit too lean and wanted to up the food

Lifeishitsometimes · 29/09/2021 14:40

ahh @Jinnybean is s/he a retriever?

ashmts · 29/09/2021 14:42

@BaconAndAvocado I'm sure you needed that full night's sleep! Everything is so much easier to deal with when you're rested. Persevere, he's still so young. You'll get there. Don't be tempted to accept the pooing on the floor long-term though or you'll set the toilet training back.

@567and What kind of spaniel is he? Mine's a working cocker so naturally very lean. As long as you're feeding the recommended portion I imagine you'll be okay. 7.5kg actually sounds quite heavy to me at 12 weeks but maybe not if it's a show or a springer?

@Jinnybean Adorable!

Aria20 · 29/09/2021 15:02

@567and Like @ashmts I can't remember at that age but I think less than yours but she is a girl so they are usually smaller. She's 9.7kg at 8 months and she is slim but not skinny.

567and · 29/09/2021 15:27

I shouldn’t have used the calculator as I wasn’t worried before then! He’s a bit of a mix up, bless him. He’s mainly springer as his mum is a sprocker and his dad is a springer x beagle. He looks like a liver and white springer to me so I just assumed he’d be on that trajectory but may be he’ll have more traits of the other breeds.

GuyFawkesDay · 29/09/2021 17:10

Shhh but FawkesPup slept for 7 hours straight. In our room. AND he took himself off to bed. Didn't try to twat about doing Andrex puppy in the bathroom or dashing into DDs room to jump on her bed. And he's been a dream out on our walk round the field tonight. What is happening??!!

I mean, he's pooped on the floor twice but I will gloss over that as it was more human error

GuyFawkesDay · 29/09/2021 17:11

@567and I will try and get FawkesPup on the scales, he's half working cocker, half show & is 16 weeks.

MsAwesomeDragon · 29/09/2021 17:17

Took AwesomePup to get weighed today, and he's 20.5kg at 6 months. According to the weight charts that's slightly underweight, but I'm not worried about him. We will up his daily food a bit though, as he is getting taller and skinnier. I think DH has been stingier with the treats than I am while I've been ill.
