Omg I never start ongoing threads like this!
Back to school for my lot tomorrow. Taken pup for an evening walk tonight, desperately trying to tire him out! He's struggled to nap today as felt too hot.

Meant I've not tried loose lead walking at all!

I've not tried at all. I do say good/good boy when he walks nicely and he does stop if I just a little tug on the line and say wait. This is required for the rapid trot towards home at the end of walks.

He got nipped in the park by an older Yorkie tonight and deserved it. I know the owners and I know she can be a little grizzly but pup has to learn not to bowl up to every dog and assume it wants to play like he does.

Did some cheese based recall (very hit and miss, depending on distractions!) and home.

Then he did a big 💩 on the floor. Door was open too! I am not pleased!!

Aria20 · 06/09/2021 20:21

Pup bit dd's leg tonight Sad she accidentally trod on her tail when she was asleep and pup snarled and went for her! Luckily didn't break the skin but she cried a lot and pup was banished to the kitchen for a while after that. Not sure how to handle that as obviously pup felt threatened or whatever when dd trod on her but she can't just bite! Dd does know not to bother her when she's asleep and it was accidental as dog was sleeping in a stupid place! I have tried to get her to sleep on her bed but she prefers the floor. I'd never forgive myself if she really hurt dd though or went for her face or something!

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 06/09/2021 20:49

@Aria20 that's a horrible predicament but no broken skin means bite was inhibited so that's good.

I have a full on 40 hr week at work and am jealous of the relaxing fun time DH is having with pup. They went to the beach together and it all looked fab in the few moments I surfaced to read a message. I'm really tired when work is busy and have a "is this it" philosophical ponder about life

MsAwesomeDragon · 06/09/2021 20:52

@Spudlet that sounds fantastic from your ds. Well done him for rescuing the leaflet on his own!! Such a lot of progress from a few weeks ago!!

@Aria20 that sounds awful. Poor DD, I hope she's ok. I have no advice, but I hope it hasn't put DD off interacting with the pup as much.

Thanks for the advice about dealing with sloppy poo, looks like I need to take a bottle of water on walks with us. It's not something I've needed to consider before as he's never produced something I couldn't just pick up. I'm going to end up needing a backpack or something for everything I need to take on dog walks. I was hoping to get by with just the treat pouch, but there's nowhere to put a bottle of water in that.

MsAwesomeDragon · 06/09/2021 20:54

He's starting daycare tomorrow, so I hope he doesn't have any more explosive gastric events tonight (either end). He still seems absolutely happy in himself, so I'm not worried about him, I just hope he doesn't make a mess at daycare.

LadyCatStark · 06/09/2021 21:15

Awww @Spudlet that’s so lovely, I remember when My DS used to do ‘hard stares’ when he was little 😭.

Aria20 · 06/09/2021 21:20

@MsAwesomeDragon I have this bag for dog walks, has lots of zips and pockets, poo bag dispenser, fits small collapsible water bowl in front pocket and a 500ml bottle of water and tennis ball fit in main section easily plus treats in a zip and phone, keys in zip part. Was only £9.99

I don't think it will put dd off as she's quite feisty and fearless, she's had a few nips before but this was a proper snarl and bite. Think am going to have to really enforce naps in either her bed or kitchen! Luckily dd back at preschool Wednesday so pup will be able to nap in peace as well.

Pup walked from the house for the first time ever which feels like real progress. She did stop and sit at the boot of the car for a bit but we persuaded her we weren't going in it and she walked nicely on lead along the pavement until just before the turn off to where we access the open space which she obviously recognises and was desperate to get there.

We also had fun in the paddling pool in the garden earlier so it's been a good day.

BaconAndAvocado · 07/09/2021 10:15

Hello may I join?
We got our Newboy lab puppy on Saturday.

I'm a complete newbie dog owner so, apart from reading and MNing, I really don't have a scoobie what I'm doing!

For the last 3 nights I've been sleeping on the sofa in the kitchen with Newboy in his crate.
He now willingly goes to his crate for rests abs sleep which wasn't the case at first!

Last night he woke and went outside at 12, 3, 4:30, 6 then woke for the day at 7.
Is it just going to be like this for a while or is there anyway I can get him to sleep longer?

tizwozliz · 07/09/2021 10:33

Welcome @BaconAndAvocado , we're exactly 2 months ahead of you with our lab pup.

He may start sleeping longer relatively quickly, some take a little more time to get there. We got down to one overnight toilet trip relatively quickly, but still quite a few wake-ups until around 11/12 weeks. I think we were downstairs for a fortnight or so before making it back to our own bed. I know some have slept through almost straight away. We got lucky with the toilet training rather than the overnight sleeping.

GuyFawkesDay · 07/09/2021 10:35

@BaconAndAvocado welcome! FawkesPup is 13 weeks and wakes once now, and many are sleeping through but that sounds exactly like our first week or so!

Mine has epic FOMO and a need to be attached to me constantly so it's been tough. He's still in our room at night and gets upset when I leave unless he's distracted.

opalescent · 07/09/2021 10:49

@BaconAndAvocado I am also a complete newbie, I literally have no idea what I'm doing from one minute to the next 😂.
I have a 13 week old working cocker spaniel puppy, and she's been with us for 5 weeks.

Welcome!

@GuyFawkesDay I always forget we have such similar pups in age/breed. Yours is a WCS right? What colour is fawkespup? Mine is lemon and white. Although she's getting to be more golden than lemon actually.

BaconAndAvocado · 07/09/2021 11:19

tizwozliz yes we've been lucky too with the house training, so far!
It's nice to know the end is in sight.

GuyFawkesDay that sounds tough. At the moment, and because weather is so nice, I leave the back door open and Newboy often goes for a little wander in his own. Mainly to eat grass, moss, leaves abs other debris he finds.
Not sure how he'll be when I eventually go back to my bedroom!!

He's just had his worming tablet in his food.

Just scooted out there to give him a treat for doing a poo on the grass!!

Hi opalescent 👋🏻

BaconAndAvocado · 07/09/2021 11:22

I'm not sure how much time I should be spending on training him?

We're working on sitting and name recognition.
I've also tried him on the lead around the garden which was completely bonkers, he just tried to chew the lead!

567and · 07/09/2021 12:05

Hi @BaconAndAvocado! Sounds like you Nd pup are doing well so far!

Second jabs day finally here! 567pup has not been liking the warmer weather. He’s lay flat as he can on the floor at the minute trying to keep cool. I’m going to pop in the pet shop and see what I can get to help keep him cool whilst I’m out later.

He’s also discovered digging. We’re having some work done in the garden and he’s decided that he just loves digging in the piles of soil. I’ve had to cover them with tarpaulin to stop him or he gets filthy and gets it up his nose!

567and · 07/09/2021 12:07

We do a few 5 min training sessions through the day at the minute. Any longer and he’s just gets bitey and over excited. He can do ‘sit’ and ‘touch’, knows his name (mainly!) and we’re working on ‘down’ (going to take some time!) and ‘drop-it’ ( please let him learn this one soon!) Grin

TerrierOrTerror · 07/09/2021 12:17

Hi all. We took TerrorPup away for the weekend, her first time to the beach. It was actually her birthday so not sure I can get away with referring to her as a pup for much longer, though she still looks so young compared to others of the same breed (size is fine, just such a puppy face).

She really surprised me with how well she did, whilst we've been away before we've not done a huge amount of busy street walking ever (despite living in London). She used to have such a people obsession she'd greet every single person like a long lost friend, but that has definitely stopped, although as soon as they talk to her she often loses her mind. Still over focussed on dogs though we noticed this was much better on a street, not so much the beach (which she loved!). Also noticed her ability to settle ia getting much better away from home, she did really well in the Shepherds hut we stayed in until we were invaded by a lot of flies on the final night. At home she's never really had a problem but she definitely hasn't completely generalised her off switch yet!

So here's to no longer having a puppy anymore, just a terror of an adolescent terrier!

LadyCatStark · 07/09/2021 12:36

Welcome @BaconAndAvocado, we have a lab puppy too, he’s 5 months. Just to let you know, the price of entrance to the puppy thread is a photo of the pup 😂. We still only manage 5-10 minute training sessions, although you’re training them all the time really at this age.

MightyMeerkat · 07/09/2021 12:47

Welcome @BaconAndAvocado

@567and Mighty Pup had her second vaccination this morning. She squealed long and loud and then growled at the vet! So glad to be on the count down to being able to go for walks.

Elmrosie · 07/09/2021 12:50

Anyone else suffering in this heat? I can't wear anything that shows my calves due to the bruises and bite marks from Elmpup.

GuyFawkesDay · 07/09/2021 13:07

@opalescent he's black with a smidge if white and is a show/wcs mix. So he's definitely looking more show type in some aspects (eyes, floof!) And more WCS in others (longer legs and leaner).

He's just playing with a chilled carrot and I've filled our hamster play pen with some water. It's actually for dogs but an inch of cool water in the shade is handy, especially as the dopey dog chewed through his cool mat. I am covered in scratches and marks too and can't go to my normal wide leg linen trousers for work because the ruddy puppy thinks they're a toy and hangs off them. And bites toes through sandals.

Total fail on pen sleeping. He howled and weed on the floor. So gave up and put crate back upstairs for now. Just had a fleece and damp towel in it last night and he slept loads better. Only up once and then for the day just before 7am.

He had his first school run walk this morning and he charmed everyone as usual. I've decided not to walk him til much later this evening as it's 28/29 here. Luckily our living room is NE facing and so it's shady til later and not too hot.

GuyFawkesDay · 07/09/2021 13:16

One thing I wish I'd trained better/more is the harness and the car. He's still bitey when the harness goes on (excited?!) And I use a treat through the head hole but when I do up the strap he nips. He's not a huge car fan but I'm going to try using it for loads of trips out to fun places so he gets more excited. Not today though. Too hot!

Teaching 'watch' (eye contact) is useful, and if anyone can get me to move FawkesPup from treat led 'down' to actually getting it I'd be most grateful!!

GuyFawkesDay · 07/09/2021 13:38

On the dog walking bag front I have a mini one from Big Pawfection which has poop bags and treats sections. I may have treated myself to one of these for once we can go further....enough space for phone, keys, treats etc I may have had to get a Spaniel one 🙈

LadyCatStark · 07/09/2021 13:54

@GuyFawkesDay oh they’re cute! I use a hand me down ruck sack from DS that’s usually covered in sand 🙈.

Talking of covered, here’s a warning to anyone who uses a whistle. I put mine on a lanyard and went to pick up Billy’s poo yesterday and the whistle went straight into the pile 🤢. Needless to say I had to use my voice instead and sterilised the whistle when I got home (although I’m still a bit 🤨 about putting it in my mouth!).
