I will start
Corgis
Afghan Hounds

When I was a child I used to see lots of Afghan Hounds
And I don’t see any of the Collies with long hair (like Lassie is it a Rough Collie?)
Border Collies I see a lot of though

I'm in the US. We have Pembroke Welsh Corgi. We have had Corgis for years. (Obviously I love the breed). They are not hugely popular in the US, but you do see them out and about on a fairly regular basis.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/08/2021 16:31

I'm not sure I've ever seen a bloodhound.

Quite a lot of bassets, including once a French 'working' type which was iirc rather longer legged and more active looking. I can't imagine ever having a dog which couldn't either get over a stile itself or be easily lifted - bassets and some other heavy dogs must be quite restrictive.

marmaladehound · 21/08/2021 16:40

@BeaucoupFish

Or Basset Hounds
Yes! I saw a lovely basset yesterday and thought I never see them anymore!
marmaladehound · 21/08/2021 16:43

I see lots of westies and border collies here in London. Not sure why so many border collies in a large city though!

I don't see bearded collies though,
One of my favourite breeds.

Far too many poodles crosses though as well as too many french bulldogs and pugs!

GuyFawkesDay · 21/08/2021 16:56

In our village there's:

Westie
Cockerpoo X lots
Welsh terrier
Spaniels of varying size
Shih Tzu
Greyhounds
Labrador
Bedlington/whippet cross
Mini schnauzer
And the chap up the road has 2 Borzoi! They're HUGE!!!

Franticbutterfly · 21/08/2021 17:00

@GiantCheeseMonster

I don’t think you see many Cairns as you used to, or even as many Westies. Old English Sheepdogs.
I think that people don't want Cairns as they don't look like pedigrees, they look like mongrels. Also there aren't many KC registered breeders of them due to their unpopularity. I love them though, and don't care if my dog doesn't look very posh, he's clever and full of personality.
littlebilliie · 21/08/2021 17:06

I love Afghan hounds our neighbours had one as a child she was beautiful.

We had a Welsh collie which are beautiful

Brownlongearedbat · 21/08/2021 17:07

You don't see Pekinese any more, well I haven't seen one for years. They used to be seen as the ultimate lap dog.
Curly coated retrievers. Haven't seen one for over 50 years. I think they are one of the breeds in danger of dying out. Shame really - I wonder if they didn't moult much? Would surely be popular now, especially seeing how much ordinary retrievers moult.
There are 3 Dandie Dinmonts in our village, all owned by the same person.
Gordon Setters? A friend had one years ago. I think another endangered breed.
I have a pedigree poodle. A lot of people assume she's a poo of some sort because she has a puppy cut. I also have a little Yorkie - no rarity value there!

littlebilliie · 21/08/2021 17:08

@Gingernaut

Irish Wolfhounds - there were two owners when I was growing up (fairly affluent area of London with big gardens).

Haven't seen one in the flesh for decades

We searched them up but no breeders

German Shepherds

Violinist64 · 21/08/2021 17:10

I have a Cairn and you could not ask for a better dog. The non-shedding part was very important for me as I have a lot of allergies. He is fairly small - we don't have a particularly large living room and did not want a dog to take up all the space by himself. Finally, he is very friendly and this is important as I have so many people coming to the house with my private music teaching. He is full of character and rather like a real life Teddy bear to look at.
I would say that the most popular breed in my area is the Miniature Schnauzer, closely followed by the Cockapoo.

wavecatcher · 21/08/2021 17:10

St. Bernard, amazing big dogs but only think I've ever come across 2

bigbluebus · 21/08/2021 17:18

I know at least 6 different people who have got a black lab puppy over the last 12 months so definitely no shortage of them in these parts. I haven't seem an afghan hound for years. As a child I had a schoolfriend whose mother used to breed them.

CoffeeWithCheese · 21/08/2021 17:18

Proper Heinz 57 varieties mutts. Last one that there was around here I think was our old guy - the greatest dog ever if your definition of a dog was something not very bright who worshiped the ground you walked on and just loved every second he spent with you.

He was an ex-stray - and he is incredibly missed. Was also an incredibly good looking chap - people used to stop and comment on him and tell me he had the look about him that he should be doing sausage adverts on the telly!

icedcoffees · 21/08/2021 17:19

I'm another that works with dogs - the most common breeds where I am are spaniels (cockers and springers mostly), labradors, border collies, dachshunds, cockapoos/labradoodles and staffies. There are also quite a few Jack Russells, Chihuahuas, huskies, malamutes, Frenchies and beagles.

Rare breeds here are probably things like Red Setters, Afghan Hounds and lap dogs.

PearlyAdriatic · 21/08/2021 17:29

I only ever once saw a beautiful Griffon Bruxellois pup. They’re not the prettiest dogs but they certainly look very wise Grin

Are they monkey dogs? I saw one of those once.
DominicRaabsTravelAgent · 21/08/2021 17:42

I would say Irish Setters but I saw one yesterday.

Agree that Bearded Collies and Bassets must be regional as I always see some on my way to work.

icedcoffees · 21/08/2021 17:55

@BeaucoupFish

Or Basset Hounds
I think there's a reason bassets aren't that popular, sadly.

They're very strong and heavy for their size, are prone to all sorts of health issues and aren't the easiest to train.

We have a beagle - so very similar personality wise, but he doesn't have the health issues that come with bassets and he's not as heavy or stubborn Grin

lljkk · 21/08/2021 18:09

There's a house I know with FIVE King Charles spaniels.
They swirl around the window when I walk by.
Not once have I seen them out on walkies :(
Would say they are unusual breed nowadays, otherwise

DominicRaabsTravelAgent · 21/08/2021 18:11

Thanks, OP. I now desperately need an Otterhound

A couple of years ago I went out with a DF to a local tourist spot and there was a meet-up of Otterhounds. They were gorgeous!

More recently DH abs I went for a walk at a local reservoir and there was a trading session for Newfoundlands. They were in the water and seemed to be loving it Smile

Black labs are very common around here, both pets and working gun dogs.

I love flat coats! We have one near us and he's SO friendly. He also knows I have treats in my pocket and makes a beeline for me every single time Grin
