I will start
Corgis
Afghan Hounds

When I was a child I used to see lots of Afghan Hounds
And I don’t see any of the Collies with long hair (like Lassie is it a Rough Collie?)
Border Collies I see a lot of though
@MrsDeaconClaybourne
There are a few setters in my area
2 Irish since lockdown, there were already one Irish and an elderly English one

I always notice because we had two as a child
That's good. They are gorgeous dogs. Can't remember when I last saw one. They were one of the dogs I wanted to have when I was grown up!

Madlymumming · 21/08/2021 14:25

We had a tough Collie and a Collie Sheltie cross when I was growing up. Haven't seen a collie or sheltie for many years.

Lots of 'poos' though. And Cockers (which we now have).

RickOShay · 21/08/2021 14:25

I would be happy with an Irish wolfhound though.

tillytoodles1 · 21/08/2021 14:27

I had three Scotties at the same time. Different personalities, but lovely little dogs.

Violinist64 · 21/08/2021 14:29

@BeaucoupFish, my nephew has a Corgi.
@tillytoodles1, my aunt has a Scottie.

Iheartmysmart · 21/08/2021 14:29

It seems to be mainly working cocker spaniels and doodles/cockerpoos where I am but I did see a Bedlington terrier the other day which looked like a lamb. Also a couple of Shelties and a Dalmatian.

PermanentlyDizzy · 21/08/2021 14:31

Read further down the thread now. We also have a couple of Dalmations and Weimaraners and one OES, one Gordon Setter and one Red Setter. Also a couple of adult Great Danes and one pup. My df had Great Danes, so I always notice them. We’ve always had a few Boxers around here. Oh and we have one local Dandie Dinmont. I also know someone who has a Glen of Imaal Terrier, but they aren’t local.

As you can probably tell, we live on the main route to the local park and if you walk further up, the way to the local dog-walking fields, so we have a constant parade of pooches past our house. Grin

Not seen any Bassett’s, Irish Wolfhounds or Deerhound. The amount of times we are stopped to ask if my relatively small Lurcher is an Irish Wolfhound is baffling. He’s nowhere near big enough and doesn’t really look like one, other than being grey and shaggy. He does have Deerhound in him, but again, he’s tiny compared to the real thing. We even get asked regularly when we’re on holiday in Ireland! We met a beautiful Wheaten coloured Irish Wolfhound puppy on the beach in Ireland once and she was terrified of my tiny (by comparison) Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier.

We rarely, if ever, see ‘mongrels/bitzers’ though, if you discount the more fashionable ‘named’ crossbreeds’. I think my boy is probably the most ‘bitzer’ locally, as he has 4 breeds in his mix.

I have a rough collie. She's three, and when we got her first we were the only ones around who had one, but since lockdown there are about three more in the area. I think we started a trend.
She gets so much attention, older men in particular love her, people slow their cars down to look at her while driving past, parents say to their kids "look! It's Lassie" and their kids say "who?", and toddlers think she is a lion.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 21/08/2021 15:01

I had a Dobie until a few years ago. I miss her terribly still. She was a lovely dog and I'll have another.

I walk my dogs with an English bull terrier owner sometimes.

Mostly it's poo's and French bulldogs everywhere.

I see one lovely huge Irish wolfhound being walked!

hellcatspangle · 21/08/2021 15:02

That’s because they are generally lovely natured dogs

All the ones I know personally are hyperactive 🤷🏼‍♀️

Branster · 21/08/2021 15:03

I love this thread!
Around here I see most of the breeds mentioned apart from bloodhound and I have never ever seen an Afghan Hound for over 20 years (I absolutely adore the breed although I wouldn't be able to keep one as they it would be too challenging for me).

There is a mix of pure breeds, quite a few large dogs too including Great Dane and rarer foreign sheepdog breeds - all stunning. Even an English sheepdog.

Some unusual lap dog breeds too that I am nit familiar with ( papillon, Hawaiian, some maltese royal something or other i never heard of etc). Unusual hunting dogs of various origins like spain. A real dog parade which is nice to see.

But the poo mixes are absolutely in the majority, most if them are totally bonkers and I'm hoping their popularity will decrease soon.

SirVixofVixHall · 21/08/2021 15:06

@CovidCorvid

Dandie dinmonts…..only ever seen one.
I saw one yesterday! A puppy. And a puppy Old English sheepdog a few minutes later. I haven’t seen an Afghan hound in decades, they were everywhere in the seventies, along with all types of Setters.
JumpJumpSlide · 21/08/2021 15:11

I'm a dog groomer and still see some of the 'pure' breeds. Have had an influx in bernese mountain dogs recently and hadn't seen one in years!
Majority of dogs are crossed with poodles now though.

MrsEricBana · 21/08/2021 15:11

I'd say don't assume every "poo" you see is a cross breed. We have a pure poodle and everyone thinks he's a cockapoo/cavapoo but he's not. A poodle is just a curly dog with a normal face unless you have a traditional poodle cut with shaved muzzle, pompoms etc. I am PPRP (Poodle PR Person).

MissyB1 · 21/08/2021 15:13

So thinking about the estate we live in there us
Our Schnauzer
At least 6 labs of various colours
1 Scottie
2 Westies
1 Spaniel
2 Bichon
2 cockerpoos

fabulouslyglamourousferret · 21/08/2021 15:15

Mongrels - just proper mongrels!

True! There's only 1 youngish standard poodle in my area and you could tell. The only one I know of around here. Everything else a mix of poodle and anything else you can imagine complete with a name which I can never remember. We used to have a lovely large poodle in the park but it sadly passed away a couple of years ago - she was perfect in behaviour (and looks!)
fabulouslyglamourousferret · 21/08/2021 15:17

And I'm glad we don't see many Alsatians, all the ones I have seen over the last few years have been shockingly bred

MumofSpud · 21/08/2021 15:19

Saw a beautiful red setter this morning! So unusual in a sea of cocker poos / sausage dogs / frenchies !
Met a corgi on our local dog walk a while back - he said (the owner not the dog!) said there were only about 350 left ?!
Also there is 1 (giant) Irish hound that we regularly see.

KOKOagainandagain · 21/08/2021 15:23

@gardeninggirl68 - his idea of washing up is to lick the plates clean!

He is looking out of the kitchen window to see if a delivery is for him - we have a neighbour who brings him freshly shot deer carcasses and he lives in hope. If you look closely you can see the disappointment in his expression when he realises it is just postie.

chesirecat99 · 21/08/2021 15:30

@fringeneedsatrim

Every other dog I see seems to be a poodle mix... it's sad that everyone seems to have the same looking dog now days. Especially as when people talk about them they often say they got a poodle mix because they're hypoallergenic when very often they aren't at all... they're only hypoallergenic if they inherited that dominant gene from the poodle.
If it's a dominant gene and there are no non-hypoallergenic pure bred poodles, surely that means all poodle mixes that have a poodle as a parent must be hypoallergenic?

If all poodles are hypoallergenic, that means that all poodles must have 2 copies of that gene. Therefore, their offspring will all have a copy of that gene and if it's a dominant gene, they will be hypoallergenic too.
