I will start
Corgis
Afghan Hounds

When I was a child I used to see lots of Afghan Hounds
And I don’t see any of the Collies with long hair (like Lassie is it a Rough Collie?)
Border Collies I see a lot of though

@MrsWooster

Mongrels, proper old school medium size bitzers.
We've just come back from Cornwall. Loads of gorgeous dogs there. But yes, lots more of the 'poo' type dogs this year. Then we rock up with our 3 'bitzers' and our JRT Grin.

I would LOVE to meet a Borzoi in real life. Absolutely STUNNING dogs Smile.

Zarene · 21/08/2021 15:32

Plenty of Doberman's round me, and we had a basset hound in the park the other day.

I loooooove an Irish setter. Would adore seeing more of them.

Newfluff · 21/08/2021 15:33

Big dogs. Just big ones in general, which is v annoying when you have a big dog that wants to play. (She does play with small dogs but it's not the same)

lljkk · 21/08/2021 15:33

Unusual for me...
Afghan: decades since I saw one, but I know a lurcher cross right now, who had Afghan parent.
Airedales. I saw one other day, first one I've seen in yrs.
Standard full size poodles. Dunno when I last saw one.
Dobermans (I saw one about 2m ago, first time in yrs)
Pomeranians.
Proper Blood hounds.

Considering how popular they are on MN, I see few beagles.

Local village has both red AND English setters (white), I see them often. Red setters drool, I can't cope with it, so beautiful & so dim... There's a local fellow with an enormous black setter, about 5 yrs old. Plus at least 3 Shar Peis I see regularly. I see Bassetts a few times a month.

I like Mongrels best, mind.

lljkk · 21/08/2021 15:33

Great Dane, come to think of it. Years & years since I've seen one in the flesh.

dottydodah · 21/08/2021 15:35

Hadnt seen an Afghan Hound for years! Suddenly saw one at the beach a few years back .Then another sort of Charcoal colour ,really nice !

GrouchyKiwi · 21/08/2021 15:35

What kind of dog do you have Newfluff? Our Newf wants to play with everyone but she's much bigger than most of the dogs around us. She always has a lovely time with the dog boarder's greyhound.

potter5 · 21/08/2021 15:36

Boxers are indeed fab! I have 2!😀

LEMtheoriginal · 21/08/2021 15:39

Im a vet nurse so see a few dogs !

Its all cockerpoos and french bulldogs

Quite a few small terriers

Certainly seeing fewer staffies and mastiffs.

We see a fair few lurchers and spaniels.

Fairly well off area, private practice

Too many imported "rescues"

dottydodah · 21/08/2021 15:40

Viszlas havent ever seen any before ,but a few years ago on the Cross Channel ferry from Jersey about 5 coming over and being checked through Customs .Then saw another at the beach near us !lovely

Milenpoe · 21/08/2021 15:41

Interesting to read, lots of pedigree, particularly British pedigree breeds you don't see as pets very often anymore..it's all doodles and poos now.

Luckily I live in the world of dog showing so get to see all these wonderful, some rare breeds on a weekly basis.

gardeninggirl68 · 21/08/2021 15:42

theres a great dane we see here out walking....very slow and serene but he's fab!

i saw a clip of a great dane puppy on social media, all legs and no coordination! very cute

Newfluff · 21/08/2021 15:43

Grouchy we have a Bernese Mountain, nearly 47kg but so soft and dopey, I just see her eyes when we meet yet another small dog and she has to be gentle. We meet up with a Rottie and they have proper bundle jumping all over each other games it's lovely to watch.
Love Newfs, our tiny neighbours had then when we were growing up, they were so well behaved.

GrouchyKiwi · 21/08/2021 15:45

Ah Newfluff I love Berners. They are so lovely.

mantlepiece · 21/08/2021 15:49

Rhodesian Ridgebacks used to be quite popular, not seen one for years!

Planetsandstars · 21/08/2021 15:50

@BeaucoupFish

Or Basset Hounds
It always surprises me they aren’t more popular as family pets. We had one as children. They are probably the most loveable breed (IMO!)
LubaLuca · 21/08/2021 15:53

I suppose we see fewer mongrels because more people get their dogs neutered and there are fewer strays these days. Good news for dogs, but it does make for a more boring guessing game when in the park - everything is a 'something'poo.

My friend has just got a St Bernard puppy, and I realised I'd never seen one in real life before! Another friend has just got a Leonberger puppy to keep her adult L'berger company - they are very gentle, but definitely not suitable as a pet for the average family.

Planetsandstars · 21/08/2021 15:55

To be honest I think the size is a major factor for the popularity of poos as family pets. They are a nice sort of compromise between boisterous Labs and toy breeds which are easily hurt by children.

Tocktock · 21/08/2021 15:58

I love a good old fashioned 'bitzer'!
DH calls all the 'poo' types expensive mongrels.
They are so fluffy though 😍

Mummyoflittledragon · 21/08/2021 16:01

There’s an Airedale near me and what might be a Dande Dinmont - it’s a sort of sausage dog terrier anyway. Occasional see a red setter around. A couple of people have pomeranians and bichon frisées. But yes, mostly poo cross breeds of some description. The almost lack of shedding is very appealing!

ErrolTheDragon · 21/08/2021 16:03

We see a good variety of dogs in our area but not Afghan hounds.
Most of the ones mentioned crop up, including some of the regional breeds - Airedales and Patterdales, Manchester Terriers (toy and standard), Lancashire Heelers.
There are of course quite a lot of French bulldogs, pugs, and mini dachshunds. Ours is a 15yo standard dachshund, our second - people used to regularly comment they didn't see many around. Quite a few -oodles but not that excessive. Lots of terriers of various sorts and 'pointy hounds' - greys, whippets and lurchers, plus occasional deer or wolfhounds. Great Danes too - before covid, DDog used to sometimes spend his holidays with a lady who had a Great Dane only a little younger than him.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 21/08/2021 16:11

I have a wire fox terrier, usually on walks we have at least one person say “you don’t see many of them”
We saw bloody loads of French bulldogs on holiday last week. And a Chinese crested. That was enough for one lifetime.

Chickpea22 · 21/08/2021 16:11

What are Afgahn’s like temperamentally? We have a couple of show Afghans near us and they seem a little bit nutty but I don’t know if that is a breed specific trait or just them.

CagneyNYPD · 21/08/2021 16:12

We have lots and lots of dogs living near us. Labs, cockerpoos, whippets, cairns, spaniels, collies, Dalmatians are all v popular round here. Loads of different breeds locally. A new English sheepdog recently arrived.

But have not seen a red setter, Afghan hound, Irish wolfhound, great dane, nor a Doberman for a very long time around here. Nor a St Bernard, Basset or a bloodhound. I suppose it is all about the "easy", non shedding dogs these days.

CoastalSwimmer · 21/08/2021 16:13

@BeaucoupFish

Or Basset Hounds
Having owned a Basset Hound (NEVER AGAIN!!!) there's a reason there aren't many around. They don't make good pets. I had 14 years of stress with ours. We have very different dogs now who are pure bliss to live with in comparison.
