I will start
Corgis
Afghan Hounds

When I was a child I used to see lots of Afghan Hounds
And I don’t see any of the Collies with long hair (like Lassie is it a Rough Collie?)
Border Collies I see a lot of though

We have Afghans, Bassets, Jack Russells and plenty of German Shepherds locally.

Not seen Boxers, Old English Sheepdogs nor Setters for quite a while.

BeaucoupFish · 21/08/2021 18:35

@DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat

Must depend on location I suppose because there’s a few Basset Hounds and Rough Collies here. Don’t see any Old English Sheepdogs here though or Irish Setters, both of which seemed quite popular when I was young.
yes - forgot about Irish Setters, beautiful dogs and again saw a lot as a child we called them ‘red setters’ I did a personal mental survey in town today and all the usual dogs around plus a couple of cross breeds.

Have not seen an Afghan since the 80’s

@liveforsummer

There are quite a few corgis round here including a few pups. My parents just lost their basset hound so I tend to notice those as I stop to talk, There is also a magnificent blood hound. Its quite a doggy part of a city here with lots of walkways and parks so maybe why we have such a selection. We even have one of those dogs that look like a string mop! Afghan hound is the only thing I don't see that's been mentioned here. We do still have a huge influx of poo's and doodles though. I've a Black and Tan Jack Russell and not seen many of those, however did spot a man walking one down the road locally the other day. Nearly stopped the car to chat then realised he'd probably think I was mad 😅
I love bloodhounds, have you ever seen ‘the film ‘Cool hand Luke’ they are amazing dogs there are some fascinating documentaries on YouTube showing how they are trained and how they are able to track humans form the shedding of their skin cells and I believe it is at one prison in florida they use actual prisoners to try and escape to train them. They are beautiful dogs and the puppies are so beautiful. I Have never seen one in real life

@Newfluff

Grouchy we have a Bernese Mountain, nearly 47kg but so soft and dopey, I just see her eyes when we meet yet another small dog and she has to be gentle. We meet up with a Rottie and they have proper bundle jumping all over each other games it's lovely to watch. Love Newfs, our tiny neighbours had then when we were growing up, they were so well behaved.
Have you seen this ? Talk about soft ….it’s adorable

@icedcoffees

I'm another that works with dogs - the most common breeds where I am are spaniels (cockers and springers mostly), labradors, border collies, dachshunds, cockapoos/labradoodles and staffies. There are also quite a few Jack Russells, Chihuahuas, huskies, malamutes, Frenchies and beagles.

Rare breeds here are probably things like Red Setters, Afghan Hounds and lap dogs.

Your list there is exactly the only dogs I see now in the area I live in

As I live in Sussex I have always thought I would like a Sussex Spaniel, but never seen one.

ApollO88 · 21/08/2021 19:17

We thought Jack Russells were quite rare in our area until we got one. Then we started noticing them everywhere and think I can name about about 8 in our area of the town.
This is our boy Edgar

No Cairns but lots of Westies
No Shetland Sheepdogs but lots of Australian sheepdogs
No Irish setters, no rough collies, but 50 million labradoodles or goldendoodles.
Every breed of dog in the world has been crossed with a black lab. And a lab/Basset hound is a terrible thing to see!

OverByYer · 21/08/2021 19:26

Funnily enough saw an Afghan hound a few days ago and both DH and I remarked that we hadn’t seen one for years.

Agree you don’t seem to get ‘Heinz 57’ any more. It’s all poodle - cross this that and the other.

joystir59 · 21/08/2021 19:30

It's all collies, lurchers and Jack russells round here, but love in farming country.

BeaucoupFish · 21/08/2021 19:53

@ApollO88
He’s lovely and I love his jaunty ‘neckerchief’

Reading lots of these comments it does make me realise I’ve seen a lot less bigger dogs around! Mostly all small/medium in this area with the bigger ones being collie or spaniel size!

I know in lockdown the prices of the giants didn’t really go up much which I think shows how unpopular they are compared to the little fluffies, such a shame as they really are amazing dogs!

MissShapesMissStakes · 21/08/2021 20:09

I have two proper miniature poodles. But they are just short all over. And everyone assumes they are cockerpoos.

We see a gorgeous black poodle with a full on poodle cut and big red bow when she's out walking. Looks amazing. I wouldn't pull it off though, neither would my poodles.

We also see a beautiful enormous standard poodle often.

SirSniffsAlot · 21/08/2021 20:25

@BIoodyStupidJohnson

Haven’t seen a borzoi for ages (although they were never the most common breed).
Funny enough I just saw one this morning being walked. First one I've seen in donkey's years though.

I miss the true Heinz 57s.

@Chickpea22

What are Afgahn’s like temperamentally? We have a couple of show Afghans near us and they seem a little bit nutty but I don’t know if that is a breed specific trait or just them.
They are a free spirit with a delicate soul and stingy with their affection. Physically strong and know exactly what they don't want. Absolutely stunning looking dogs but they do need a different kind of exercise than your regular labrador and you can't just go for a relaxing 8 miles walk without taking a million precautions. They are probably in their element if they had the chance to live on a mountain somewhere with one owner only without the faff of wearing pretty bows and having their hair done every week. I admire those who succeed in raising a content Afghan hound as a pet. Very jealous too.

We have a smooth collie - vulnerable breed and not very well known. When someone asks about him and I try to explain, I often say 'Like Lassie with a haircut' - which only makes sense to over 40s...

Gherkingreen · 21/08/2021 20:58

A neighbour has a young Irish Setter and she is breathtakingly beautiful, not a breed I've seen much of since they were quite popular in the 80s when I was growing up.
Most of the dogs round me seem to be cockerpoo types, whippets, staffie crosses or Border terriers. Have seen loads of daschunds recently too.

Roselilly36 · 21/08/2021 20:58

Bearded Collies, not seen one in years.

userxx · 21/08/2021 21:00

@CoffeeWithCheese what a beauty! Those eyes brows just finish him off.

StCharlotte · 21/08/2021 21:00

Those cross breeds that look like miniature black retrievers.

OverByYer · 21/08/2021 21:03

Now I’m googling all these dogs and wanting a new one. The smooth collie is lovely

Gherkingreen · 21/08/2021 21:04

We have a true Heinz 57; his mum was a pregnant rescue (she's part Patterdale) and we've no idea what she mated with.
Our pup is a loving, sensitive, daft as a brush spaniel-sized bearded terrier with hairy legs and a Lurcher look to him. We loves him so much.

Lonecatwithkitten · 21/08/2021 21:06

@lljkk

Unusual for me... Afghan: decades since I saw one, but I know a lurcher cross right now, who had Afghan parent. Airedales. I saw one other day, first one I've seen in yrs. Standard full size poodles. Dunno when I last saw one. Dobermans (I saw one about 2m ago, first time in yrs) Pomeranians. Proper Blood hounds.

Considering how popular they are on MN, I see few beagles.

Local village has both red AND English setters (white), I see them often. Red setters drool, I can't cope with it, so beautiful & so dim... There's a local fellow with an enormous black setter, about 5 yrs old. Plus at least 3 Shar Peis I see regularly. I see Bassetts a few times a month.

I like Mongrels best, mind.

I have a standard poodle. Having just been on holiday I have spent a week with people asking:

What is he?
Is he a labradoodle?
Is he? (A standard poodle)

Fortunately he adores people in particular small children and with strangers he is very polite and gentle. He is due a clip so is a little shaggy currently.
