Puppy Survival Thread August part 2

New puppy thread as August has been a busy month! Not sure how to link the other thread?! @MrsHerculePoirot @SweetLathyrus @Spudlet @MsAwesomeDragon @GuyFawkesDay @opalescent @ashmts

First night for Elmpup sleeping on her own went really well! So proud of her. She whimpered quietly a did a soft bark in the first 30 minutes, so I went in to the room and settled her back in her bed. One more quiet whimper in the night, then she was quiet until I got up with her at 6.30. She trotted out to the garden happily to gave a pee and poo and seems to have slept better than usual - not sure whether the sleepy music helped, or whether it was not having to listen to me/DH snoring.

I know one swallow doesn't make a summer, but I'm really pleased with her,

How old is Elmpup? It feels light years away to do that with ours 😩

After a really good day yesterday... had to cut our morning walk short as naughty pup ran the length of the field to try and play with an on lead dog and completely ignored me calling her so I had to run over and grab her! Luckily it was a friendly spaniel who didn't mind but I put her back on lead and went home after that!

I'm so jealous @Elmrosie We had a rubbish night. Pup was up just before 5 for a wee and then wouldn't settle. Out at 6 for a poo and then was playful and bitey, crying for attention, so I gave up on any more sleep and got up at 7.

Have just been to Wilko and they have some fab dog toys including a stretchy giraffe for only £3. Pup loves it and it means we can play tug without her biting my fingers 🙂

@Aria20 I think we have the same dog as well as the same DH 🙈. Have you tried a dog whistle? They can hear of from further away and once they got that one track concentration on something it does seem to cut through it better than your voice!

Gawd you've all made me rethink the sofa. He's fast asleep in his crate (on his back, legs akimbo) and very settled.

But.... I like cuddling a dog on the sofa and all our dogs have been allowed up. Sofas are both old and covered because of this.

But ...goofy is a big dog and probably not as clean as our terrier so I wanted to keep him off right from the off.

Now dithering

@hilseey it's really hard isn't it. I was in simillar dilemma a few nights back. He drank well and by morning was fine but really worrying

I'm standing firm on the sofa issue. As tempting as puppy sofa cuddles are, we're expecting our pup to end up 50kgs+, so if he sits on the sofa I'll have to sit on the floor!

Yeah I think if mine was going to be 50kg not 15 I'd probably change my mind.

FawkesPup is now a tired boy. Took him into town to the Doggy Deli on the market to buy some treats. Met about 20 other dogs, he had a dog ice cream and he is now absolutely flaked out, to the point that even lunch hasn't interested him 🤣

I think I may have to change Spudpup’s food as we get to the end of the current bag as his tummy isn’t happy at the moment. It’s not awful, but things are definitely a bit looser than they should be and he’s extremely farty in the evening. Thinking I may try Simpson’s Premium - we really need it to be a dry complete food, and not too expensive! But this one looks not too bad? Does anyone feed it?

@GuyFawkesDay what an adorable photo. Mine loved that ice cream too!!

One tired puppy here too, we went to a dog social with some friends who have a 6 month old lab, then back to theirs afterwards. Everyone was amazed at how bold she is (I'm yet to decide if this level of boldness is a positive or negative thing!). We spent quite some time trying to get a photo of them together, easier said than done!

@Spudlet we use this which scores highly but she's getting bored of it so I'm trying a different flavour when we finish this bag

@tizwozliz wow the size difference! I think bold is a good thing! You don't want a timid pup who is scared of everything

Bought a level 3 Nina ottosson. It's been out of the box five mins and he's cracked it

@tizwozliz it was Worker. I'll be interested to see how he comes at it a second time and how much of working it out was just luck and scrabbling. The flip things took less than ten seconds. The ring in the middle is slightly trickier

@Wolfcub how big are the sections you put food in on the toys. I looked at that puzzle and the pictures on Amazon show small holes with tiny bits of kibble, our kibble is quite large!

The worker has the same size holes as the slide and hide, they're about 1 cm in diameter. We still have puppy kibble which fits easily, but the sample kibble we had from wolfworthy also fitted, but that is more cylinder shaped, I know some kibble is more spherical so might not fit.

Realised goofy fats pup needs a new harness as his is looking snug. What is the chance of buying one that adjusts to adulthood...he's only 13 weeks. (Highly unlikely I imagine)

Aria I put slices of sausage in the depressions and then either kibble (small sized) or broken soft biscuit in the holes. As Tiz says they are about 1cm wide photos of a wagg fish and chips biscuit (which fits) for info

@MakeMeCleanTheHouse - we have a perfect fit which comes in 3 sections. Whilst I don't expect to use any of the sections we have now in adulthood I think we'll be able to incrementally change the sections so the end result is we will only buy the equivalent of two full harnesses.

Billy certainly had a good desensitisation session today. We went to our usually deserted beach only to find it had been turned into a pop-up airfield! I wasn’t going to go down onto the beach but there were off lead dogs running around the aircraft that must have belonged to the owners so I figured why shouldn’t I? The prom was packed full of people watching that we had to walk past nicely and then we watched some aircraft taking off from a distance. It was difficult to know where to walk though as there was no defined runway. How on Earth that for past health and safely in this day and age I’ve no idea!

The Primula worked an absolute treat as he happily ignored an exuberant collie but I did put him on his lead when we saw a westie as I wasn’t going to risk it after last time 🙈. He did some lovely off lead heeling but the only down side is that I had to walk further as he stuck to me like glue 😂.
