@MightyMeerkat how old is yours? We've found the older age chews have helped massively now he's 12 weeks. The beef bladder twists, pizzles and the coffee wood chew have really helped direct his chewing to the right things and being

Nylabones and toys just haven't ever cut it for him. He seems far happier and calmer this week, bizarrely. Very likely also linked to being out and about too.

opalescent · 02/09/2021 22:19

@GuyFawkesDay what is the least smelly adult chew that you've tried? Opalpup loves a beef one of some description, but I've had to banish it to the garden as it really pongs!!

Re: leaving them alone- I really wanted to establish that as early as possible. I work from home, but have to go out several times a week for home visits, which take about 90 minutes start to finish. So I'm trying to work up in increments. So far she seems ok about it, as long as I leave a busy toy, and make sure she's well exercised. It may all change of course, it's early days.

Please don't take this early positivity to mean I have an angel pup- she is also a bitey chewy jumpy demon, who has me in tears of frustration at times!

LadyCatStark · 02/09/2021 22:40

@Elmrosie is doesn’t make sense does it? We have a boy but even I know that you don’t walk a bitch in heat in a busy place at peak times!

@opalescent lamb skin chews don’t smell and are longer lasting than pizzles.

Our crate training went too well and Billy struggles to settle outside of it when he’s tired, so I’m sort of working on undoing his crate training now!

GuyFawkesDay · 02/09/2021 22:46

Lamb skin braids definitely, pizzles don't smell too bad.

The beef bladder twists are definitely his fave though 🤢

FawkesPup is a little tinker. He's STILL protest weeing at the bottom of the stairs. Going to shampoo the bottom step this weekend as cleaning the wooden floor isn't working.

He's also starting excitemeng weeing when he sees people. Lovely.

MightyMeerkat · 02/09/2021 22:47

@GuyFawkesDay pup is 12 weeks now. She's not bothered by yak chews. She'll chew a lambs ear a little. But nothing keeps her attention for longer than a few minutes and then it's back to the curtains, furniture etc. She has her second jab on Tuesday so I'm hoping a few walks will help.

GuyFawkesDay · 02/09/2021 23:14

Argh nightmare! Fawk5 not bothered by yak chews tbh. The others are far more successful.

He's been a toad for feet/ankles/trouser legs though. Hopefully yours will get better once out, that's really helped as he's tired out!!

Aria20 · 03/09/2021 06:05

@GuyFawkesDay my pup has only just stopped excited wees when seeing certain people at 6.5 months!!

To everyone in the pre-walk stage - the walks really do help, so don't lose heart! The only thing we've found is that we have to be careful Elmpup doesn't get too overstimulated on her walks or she gets overtired. That means the biting etc returns and she's a devil to get settled.

Her new trick is stealing my socks from my feet.

MightyMeerkat · 03/09/2021 06:51

@GuyFawkesDay and @Elmrosie Thank you, that gives me hope!

Elmrosie · 03/09/2021 07:03

@MightyMeerkat - you're welcome. We made the mistake yesterday of not taking her out in the evening because she's been so tired from her various activities this week. Massive error. She had zoomies on steroids. Won't be doing that again.

Tonight will be night 1 of trying to get her to sleep on her own downstairs. I'm expecting a very broken night!

opalescent · 03/09/2021 07:08

@Elmrosie how old is your pup? Please keep us posted on tonight! Does she currently sleep in your room? I will be wanting to make the same transparent some point, but we are definitely a way off that right now. Opalpup is very settled in her crate upstairs though, which I am grateful for.

takemetomars · 03/09/2021 07:15

@MakeMeCleanTheHouse

That's a lovely photo *@takemetomars*
Thank you. I picked one where he is looking majestic. Here he is looking like a goofball!

@Elmrosie Definitely like to hear how you get on. My pup won't sleep in the pen or crate, she just sits crying and won't even settle if I am next to her/stroking her, and so she's on the bed with me at night. It does mean I'm knackered though as she wakes a lot during the night for a wee or just to play. I need to get her used to the pen or crate but just don't know where to start given the number of failures.

tizwozliz · 03/09/2021 07:41

The beef bladder twists are definitely his fave though

Secretly quite glad that Ada doesn't seem that keen on these. Her favourite seems to be ostrich spaghetti at the moment, which are very inoffensive smell wise

567and · 03/09/2021 08:00

Oh no, I’ve just checked the chews I bought and they are the beef bladder ones! 😆 I might just leave those for the garden after reading the comments about the smell!

567pup is much better after going back to his original food. Dh tired him out in the garden yesterday evening and he slept really well last night. 1 week and 4 days until I can take him out. Not that I’m counting!

tizwozliz · 03/09/2021 08:19

I'm busy trying to research food to transition to as were nearly at the end of a bag. We got a free sample of wolfworthy which we've used as training treats and she'd definitely choose that over her current kibble. Looking at getting some samples of Eden and Millies Wolfheart too but there are so many different options to choose from.

567and · 03/09/2021 08:28

That last food I tried really didn’t agree with his poor tummy! I also think I did the transition too quickly. He didn’t seem too upset with it but not nice to be cleaning up!

I’ve just put him in his crate for a nap so I can have a quick shower and I’ve found that if I put bird sounds on YouTube on the tv he’ll happily sit and watch it if he’s woken up. Means it gives me 10 mins or so to sort myself out!

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 03/09/2021 08:46

I need new food (possibly) He is on Arden Grange but not that enthusiastic so I'm thinking something different maybe.

We lost iPhone charger in the first week.

First night sleeping alone in his crate in another room. Result from my pov. DH heard him at 5.30am so came to join him and I slept through 😆

cheeseisthebest · 03/09/2021 08:52

Sorry so much to catch up on. Seems like all pups are doing well at some things and struggling at others. Cheesepup slept last night in his crate from 11 to 7. I used to put him in there earlier but now DH is going to put him in there just before he goes to bed and we will stick what that.
Can't believe he's now 14 weeks old, he's grown so much. I already miss my tiny puppy.
We need to work on leaving him alone though, just while we go upstairs!

cheeseisthebest · 03/09/2021 08:54

Need to use Kongs and Lickimats more.
Been really nippy but if we are strong and ignore and no eye contact he does give up!

cheeseisthebest · 03/09/2021 08:55

If I leave him in his crate with the door open he will just follow me so do I just move around loads? Sorry if I'm being a but dense!

tizwozliz · 03/09/2021 08:59

I think the idea is you leave something good in his crate and move around doing boring things so pup learns that sometimes staying still is the best option.

Elmrosie · 03/09/2021 09:02

@opalescent - she's just turned 15 weeks. She won't stay in her crate, as she gets too hot, she likes to move around the room in the night.

@MightyMeerkat - it's such a landmark when they start going through the night without needing to go out for a pee or poo! Made a huge difference to how tired we were.

TheBigMacDougal · 03/09/2021 09:24

This week has been so busy! I’ve been reading to catch up each day and then not posting!

Mac pup is doing well. Definitely enjoys getting out on his walks and he tried doggy daycare for a couple of hours yesterday, and think he’s still tired today Smile

I am trying to let him snooze with the crate door open or on a settle blanket next to me more. Sometimes it works, sometimes he can’t settle. Last night he took himself to him crate at 8.30 and left DH and I in the living room. He doesn’t like being taken out the last couple of wees at 9 and 10 before we all go to bed and just wants to snooze. When did people start to let them settle earlier to bed for the night?

Also, sorry for the grossness, but has anyone given a wormer and then seen worms being passed the couple of days after? It sounds like it’s normal from what I’ve read, but I wasn’t expecting it and any worrying he may have been uncomfortable. He does eat lots around the garden though so maybe it’s to be expected…???

cheeseisthebest · 03/09/2021 10:29

Given him his lickimat for first time so will see how that goes!
