I can't imagine a bed like that surviving Wolfpup.

She might turn into a chewer yet, but I thought I'd try this as wasn't hugely expensive and wanted to reclaim the armchair.

Aria20 · 18/08/2021 19:16

@tizwozliz looks like a nice comfy mini sofa bed!

Returnoftheowl · 18/08/2021 19:18

So... How do people get their pup to settle in a crate?

We put treats in the crate so he has good associations with it. We've sat with him while he goes in there, with the door shut.
But he just barks and bark and howls. He won't settle. I'm surprised the neighbours haven't complained yet.

I keep seeing the advice "just pop him in the crate for a nap"...I wish we could do this?!

LadyCatStark · 18/08/2021 19:23

@Returnoftheowl we play sleep music for him on Spotify through Alexa. It knocks him straight out 😂.

Nix32 · 18/08/2021 19:25

@Returnoftheowl I think you're supposed to encourage them to go in there for naps with the door open before moving to closed door naps, but I'm definitely not an expert and the crate isn't getting much use at the minute.

Have had a family day out and Nixpup is completely zonked. Ended up carrying him for some of it. He behaved beautifully in 2 pubs (I'll gloss over the puddle he made in the first one - I was very apologetic and cleaned it up immediately, very grateful for tiled floors!).

cheeseisthebest · 18/08/2021 19:26

My puppy whiffs of dog poo. He had a particularly sticky one earlier and I thought I'd cleaned it all off. The joy of shitzu fur! Yuk!

Unfortunately he won't nap in it with the door open. He won't nap in it at all. If you encourage him in the crate and leave the door open he walks straight out.

I'll try some sleepy music.

We are really struggling with getting him to act calmly.

tizwozliz · 18/08/2021 19:32

@Returnoftheowl - does he nap elsewhere? If so, have you tried transferring to crate when sleeping? That was the first step for us

cheeseisthebest · 18/08/2021 19:46

Im struggling tonight. I'm really tired and feel like it's all on me. It was me who wanted a puppy. Feel in chaos.

He likes to nap right in the doorway between the living room and the kitchen, other then that he's not fussy. We've got flagstone tiles in the kitchen which he likes to lay on, I suspect because they are nice and cool.

The crate is only about a metre away from the doorway, so we can't move it any closer.

GuyFawkesDay · 18/08/2021 20:11

I have had to transfer FawkesPup sleepy from the floor to his crate. He has a ferplast travel one though which is light so we carry it downstairs to the living room in the morning. He tends to nod off near a person's feet but if I pop him onto his comfy bed in the crate he snuggles down and has now started taking himself into the crate for naps. The calming bed has really helped with this.

I'm no crate expert at all but we wanted him to have somewhere that's his "den". The current one is small but I have the same in next size up ready for when he outgrows it so hopefully he will transfer into that.

You have my sympathy! I'm struggling tonight as well. We've had two good evenings, now he's back to his previous behaviour.
GuyFawkesDay · 18/08/2021 20:13

@cheeseisthebest I've felt the same today. Wee puddles, bitten kids, can't move without the puppy following. Stolen socks/undies, general mayhem and feel awful I can't take the kids on as many outings as I would in summer normally too.

Our puppy is a 15kgs at 12 weeks, so he's a bit tricky to carry and put where we want him! Also if you go near him while he's napping he bounces straight up.

It's like he didn't have an off switch!

cheeseisthebest · 18/08/2021 20:37

I'm trying to work too and feel like I'm just behind with everything and so can't do anything. I'm just moaning at the kids to take the dog out! They are good with him I just wish I'd booked some time off work.

GuyFawkesDay · 18/08/2021 20:37

Oh lordy yes, that's not an easy job @Returnoftheowl !!! FawkesPup is only 5kg and quite portable!!!

I did have a shock meeting a full adult Springer in the park, I have got used to a titchy dog

cheeseisthebest · 18/08/2021 20:43

Returnoftheowl what breed is your dog?

Returnoftheowl · 18/08/2021 20:46

@cheeseisthebest

Returnoftheowl what breed is your dog?
He's a Newfoundland x standard poodle
cheeseisthebest · 18/08/2021 20:51

Oh lovely. My pup is only 3kg so more portable! Grown loads though!

Returnoftheowl · 18/08/2021 20:58

I'm jealous! A more portable dog would be so much easier!
Returnoftheowl · 18/08/2021 21:00

Or at least easier to move around!

21 hours a day he's adorable. Those remaining 3hours tho...

cheeseisthebest · 18/08/2021 21:06

Haha yes!! Mine is flat out.

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 18/08/2021 21:36

@cheeseisthebest I hear you Wine

Big paws is 10kg at 10.5 weeks which is 2kg in 2 weeks...

We have a crate and slow progress. He's happy to go in and sleep there but restless and comes in and out frequently. I've started lifting him if asleep and plonking him back in saying good boy, bedtime etc. I push the gate to but rarely lock it. On the occasions I have locked it he has quickly become anxious so it's opened immediately. I feel its only a matter of time before we can lock it and he sleeps longer. Still two visits to the garden in the night and crate by the patio door. I'm on the sofa however a huge tarantula trotted across the floor last night which really upset me and DH did last night and has offered to do tonight.

DH away for a few days from Friday so I might find the sofa challenging.

opalescent · 18/08/2021 22:08

@MakeMeCleanTheHouse when you say tarantula...😱 do you live abroad, and it was an actual tarantula?!!
