New Whippet

Outbutnotoutout · 28/06/2021 19:41

I might be a new whippet mummy tomorrow.
We are going to see some 11 wk old pups and I'm probably going to fall in love and come home with one.

I have owned whippets before, but need a bit of reminding.

Boy or girl?
I always from my girls to be a bit aloof at times, which makes the better pet?

What do I need?

@Scattyhattie yes, and the irony is that the larger lurchers (greyhound/deerhound crosses) are generally actually much more laid back and chilled out than the whippet/beddie ones Grin

Smaller does not equal easier Grin

Outbutnotoutout · 02/07/2021 19:12

No that's so true, I think

Whippet = teenager bit more active
Greyhound = grandparents lazy, laidback

@wolfiefan...I think we all already know that your breeders are the gold standard for any dog breeder that have ever drawn breath

This!

Enjoy your new puppy OP!

Wolfiefan · 02/07/2021 21:52

Thanks for the tag but I’ve already said I would rather have gold standards than none. Animal welfare matters to me. Maybe it should matter more to more people? Hmm

ChubbyLittleManInACampervan · 02/07/2021 21:56

Do you do that face a lot in real life too? Grin

Colourmylife1 · 02/07/2021 22:04

Your new puppy is just gorgeous OP. Enjoy every minute.

Largethighsbadeyes · 02/07/2021 22:43

It wasn't a tag. It was quoting someone else's post.

You are 100% holier than thou on this board. It's tiresome and it does put people off posting for advice

Can I politely ask you to get off my thread.

Go and preach somewhere else!!!!

It did tag me so I responded. Confused

CommunistLegoBloc · 03/07/2021 09:42

Lovely puppy! How's she getting on?

I agree that this board has some very sanctimonious posters. If you haven't rescued, or got a puppy from an artisan breeder who has one litter a decade and weans them on raw unicorn meat, you're a bad person. So tiresome.

Outbutnotoutout · 03/07/2021 10:05

She is great
We tried crate training at night, but she's not ready ...so she's in bed with us, so we can get up when she needs a wee and poo.

Going to keep making the crate attractive during the day and feed her in there, with the door open so she gets used to it.

Most of her wees and poos are outside, a few accidents but it's getting better

She has settled in and feels.more comfortable so is racing round, but has also started nipping and mouthing.

Need some ideas on that really, please 🙏

Give her a toy you'd rather she bit every time she mouths you. Sometimes making a high pitch ouch can stop them, sometimes turning your back or going to another room can work. Teething is quite sore for them hence the chewing, but is short lived thankfully.

worktrip · 03/07/2021 12:59

All the aggression re puppy breeders can just piss off. We bred one litter from our springer spaniel and used a friends KC reg dog (ours also KC reg) as the father. Both healthy animals and at the peak of their health and age for breeding. All puppies treated etc and rehomed responsibly. We didn't make much money because of the vet bills, food, KC etc and stopped at one litter.

I feel we are responsible pet owners and could well have been the type of people OP bought from. So much moralising and conclusion jumping whenever anyone buys a dog here.

Enjoy your puppy OP and don't let others put a dampener on it.

warmfluffytowels · 03/07/2021 13:02

How much sleep is she getting, OP?

Puppies tend to get "zoomies" when they're over-tired, but they're a bit like toddlers and will resist naps! Mine didn't like the crate either, so we popped him on a lead instead - it meant he had no choice but to curl up and go to sleep as he couldn't do anything else Grin

She should be getting around 18 hours of sleep per 24 hours :) I found a frozen kong helped settle mine down, or something like a frozen carrot.

Outbutnotoutout · 03/07/2021 14:47

Started turning back on her when she gets to rough biting.

She sleeps loads 😴

She has started pooing and eating it, great!! 🤮

Largethighsbadeyes · 03/07/2021 18:14

Oh god my current one did the poo eating!

It was a race as to who got there first...boak!

It didn't last long though

Outbutnotoutout · 04/07/2021 09:33

Such a good night last night

Went to be about 11, she was up at 1.50 for a quick wee, then didn't wake until 7.30

Please never buy a Whippet puppy online.
Go via a Whippet Club where you will be vetted very stringently by the potential puppy breeder.
Most reputable Whippet breeders have a waiting list, and there are homes lined up before the female even gets mated.

We waited a couple of years, and it is worth it for a well reared puppy who is well socialised at the breeder’s home.

These Whippet ladies also offer to take the dog back for any reason and at any time.

They usually only have a litter when they want a female to continue their line.

Glumtree and Pets 4 homes are the place where the back yard breeders and puppy farmers advertise.

Wolfiefan · 29/06/2021 14:39

Sod animal welfare eh? Never mind the lowlives breeding back to back litters from the bitches or what they do when these bitches are no longer any use to them. Just as long as you’ve got a cute puppy OP. I just hope there’s a special circle of hell for breeders like that and the people who like their pockets.

Agree100 percent.
NEVER, ever ever buy a dog from Scumtree or Pets for homes.

The fact that Eleven week old pups - with choice of gender- are available ( Especially in last year’s climate) sends alarm bells ringing.

Most carefully bred Whippets will have homes lined up months before the parents are even mated, and ironically the price for these is “reasonable” as the person doing it is not in it for money, but furthering their “Line”

I’m shocked at the amount of people who buy from these ads.
Some pups are seen without their mother.

Now ( 2022) rescues are full to bursting with last year’s pups.

Whisp3r · 10/05/2022 21:07

I assumed on reading the OP that she was getting the pup from a rescue for several reasons.

  1. That's where a lot of people go to get their dogs.
  2. The pups are 11 weeks.
  3. There are so many available for her to choose from at 11 weeks.

I'm still thinking she probably got them in a rehoming situation and does not want to say as it could be outing if someone searches for the rescue and finds the correct one.

Weird that others are so positive that she must have gone to a puppy farm that they can state it as fact and bully her about it. Really weird.
