New Whippet

Outbutnotoutout · 28/06/2021 19:41

I might be a new whippet mummy tomorrow.
We are going to see some 11 wk old pups and I'm probably going to fall in love and come home with one.

I have owned whippets before, but need a bit of reminding.

Boy or girl?
I always from my girls to be a bit aloof at times, which makes the better pet?

What do I need?

I'm surprised anyone can make money from whippet pups tbh. Rescues are full of them. We got a whippet x from a rescue when he was 6 months old. We dont know why he was given up. He is absolute beautiful. Hes a perfect pet, but people dont seem to want them. Probably because they are a bit bony.

Wolfiefan · 30/06/2021 18:23

@Floralnomad why didn’t I rescue? I always have in the past but that was cats.
I wanted this breed. I’ve waited for many many years to be able to own them. I also waited years to find a decent breeder. Both pups came from knowledgable people who only breed when they want another litter of pups. They aim to breed for health and fit for purpose.
So I’ve been very careful to avoid puppy farmers and commercial breeders. It’s heartbreaking how many people make no effort to do so at all.
But not everyone can/should rescue anyway.

Floralnomad · 30/06/2021 18:44

@Wolfiefan I don’t really care why you didn’t rescue and I think we all already know that your breeders are the gold standard for any dog breeder that have ever drawn breath .

Wolfiefan · 30/06/2021 18:50

You literally asked why I didn’t rescue! Hmm
Gold standard? Where animal welfare is concerned I refuse to lower them beneath that. These dogs are my responsibility. But I also care about their parents, where their siblings end up and having the continued support of a breeder.
I think anyone who shops online for a cute puppy with no concern for welfare should have higher standards.

Laceandflowers383 · 30/06/2021 19:00

Wolfiefan but you don't need to be so sanctimonious about it. You're putting people off posting on here and I speak from experience.

Floralnomad · 30/06/2021 19:32

It was a rhetorical question .

MaryBoBary · 30/06/2021 20:18

We have a male whippet and he is lovely. He was very energetic as a puppy , but began to calm down at about 18-24 months. He's 7 now and still has his moments, people tend to assume he's a puppy when on a walk because he's so happy to see everyone. But he's so gentle and loving too. Our son has grown up around him from newborn and although we have had strict boundaries with the dog, he has always been very good with children. Also no issues with house training him and he's never humped anything.

I'm going to ask mumsnet to delete this thread and those who want to talk about breeding and puppy farming can bugger off somewhere else.

People keep going on about rescues, or how whippets should be cheap, rescues are full of whippets…

It’s not true, maybe it was pre-covid, but I’ve tried for a year to rescue a lurcher, tried various rescues, but no luck (I thought we’d be a good fit, as we already have a rescue lurcher, have a fenced garden, I WFH even in non pandemic times kids are older etc etc)…. Well, we got rejected a few times for having males in the house, for our fence not being dug into the ground ;a dog could dig a hole, saying that I never leave the dogs in garden unsupervised went on deaf ears), I was also rejected dimly as I was 1 of hundreds applicants etc etc

The world has changed

Getting a rescue dog is very very hard

So we got a lurcher pup instead

Whippets are going for around £2k where I live!

ChubbyLittleManInACampervan · 01/07/2021 11:41

Simply, not “dimly “ Grin

HoppingPavlova · 01/07/2021 12:47

I’m sorry this thread has marred your new addition OP. People can be arses. She looks so lively and at home already from the pics shown and I’m sure she is going to have a great life ahead with your family.

HoppingPavlova · 01/07/2021 12:49
  • Lovely, not lively! Although I’m sure as a pup lively as wellGrin.
crazywhippet · 01/07/2021 13:01

Ah she's super cute - I'll attempt to lighten the atmosphere by posting a picture of my whippet puppy who steals everything and runs around the garden with her spoils.

Here she is with one of my bras - she's certainly an incentive to put laundry away quickly Grin

Every time I have EVER posted on this board, even about something completely innocuous like nail cutting it ALWAYS without fail comes back to the same old people accusing you of being in collusion with puppy farmers, makes every one feel shit and no one gets their questioned answered.

Wish these posters would bugger off and stick to the Breeding/farming posts and let other people actually USE the boards to talk about their puppies, dogs and ownership issues they are having.

Floralnomad · 01/07/2021 13:54

@crazywhippet she’s gorgeous as well as helping with the laundry .

Thank you, I have two older ones who are fairly sensible and the monster small one who is unofficially named "Baby" (she does have a proper name too). They are all spoilt rotten with Baby being pretty much adored by everyone, despite her Niffler like tendencies.

'Scuse the mess in the garden, having some work done atm.

You should see our garden , my husband is building a patio and path and it’s very slow progress , when it rains I have my own lake ! I assume someone was standing holding something attractive for that photo to be taken .

crazywhippet · 01/07/2021 15:16

Don't think of it as a lake, imagine it's your own swimming pool Grin

My middle one told them all to sit and they were waiting for her to throw the dog frisbee.

Outbutnotoutout · 01/07/2021 16:37

She is very lively, and lovely

She has settled in well and is racing round

She had a little wee infection so a 5 day course of antibiotics will see her right.

Best addition to the family

Lovely whippet photos 📷 they do make lovely pets

cupsofcoffee · 01/07/2021 16:40

I'm so glad she's settled in well! I'm sure you'll have many happy years together :)

Scattyhattie · 01/07/2021 16:58

She's beautiful and don't see many black whippets about now, maybe more in racing type.

My friend has a gorgeous whippy pup and I'm quite jealous, I've even had a look at ads as do need to downsize with next dog but not sure I really want to go through the hard puppy phase . To a PP whippet or small lurchers have always been in high demand in rescue (apart from bull x) so unless older don't seem to hang around long, the larger lurchers & Greyhounds are plentiful.

longtompot · 02/07/2021 15:59

I am falling more and more in love with whippets. What are the cons of having one, bearing in mind I have a show cocker spaniel right now.

Outbutnotoutout · 02/07/2021 16:54

Pros...
Don't smell
Don't need much exercise
Sleep a lot
Loving
No health issues

Cons
Can suffer from separation anxiety
Farts

longtompot · 02/07/2021 17:28

A lot more pros than a spaniel, a fair few of those would be added to your cons list Grin Athough she is luffly and I luffs her very much.

Outbutnotoutout · 02/07/2021 17:32

Lol 😁
