New Whippet

Outbutnotoutout · 28/06/2021 19:41

I might be a new whippet mummy tomorrow.
We are going to see some 11 wk old pups and I'm probably going to fall in love and come home with one.

I have owned whippets before, but need a bit of reminding.

Boy or girl?
I always from my girls to be a bit aloof at times, which makes the better pet?

What do I need?

@Floralnomad

Unfortunately some of these posters that you talk about *@BlaBlaSmthSmth* have now put people off coming to The Doghouse to ask questions and that is not a good thing because as you say there is some good advice to be had here . Perhaps it’s the manner in which some people post .
I don't spend a lot of time here so cannot comment on the general manner in which people post. But this thread that we are posting on now, those posters were not being unpleasant. That is what I was commenting on, it was rude and unnecessary the way other posters accused them of abuse and putting a dampener on things. I applaud those posters for keeping the conversation going around animal abuse, it needs to be at the forefront of your mind when you are looking into finding a pet.
Floralnomad · 30/06/2021 14:05

just hope there’s a special circle of hell for breeders like that and the people who like their pockets ( I assume the like is supposed to say line)
The above is from a post upthread by wolfiefan , are you telling me that’s a pleasant thing to say to someone who has simply asked for an opinion on whether to buy a girl or boy pup @BlaBlaSmthSmth

Floralnomad · 30/06/2021 14:06

@Outbutnotoutout sorry to derail your thread btw

cupsofcoffee · 30/06/2021 14:14

There are some amazing posters on this site with a lot of knowledge to share (not me) and an obvious passion for animal welfare.

You're right, but some of those "passionate" posters have put me off ever coming on here for advice. I go elsewhere if I'm having a problem - I would never, ever post about it on here because some people are rude, short, snappy and downright patronising.

Posts don't have to full of swearing or nasty language to make people feel bad. I've seen posters get absolutely ripped apart on here for asking really basic questions - it's just totally unnecessary and doesn't actually help anyone.

HoppingPavlova · 30/06/2021 14:18

Congrats on the new puppy and she looks beautiful. Lucky girl and lucky household ❤️.

Outbutnotoutout · 30/06/2021 14:34
@BlaBlaSmthSmth the OP says in her opening post that she has had dogs before so she is not someone who is new to dogs looking for advice . She has also said in later posts that the tone of some of the posts has taken the shine off posting for her , posts don’t need to be openly abusive to actually bother someone . If you want to discuss puppy farming then start a thread about it , you and the others like you don’t need to bring your opinions to a thread where they were not asked for .
Thank you

She has settled in well

I have had 4 whippets over the past 20yrs, 2 I lost to rainbow Bridge, 1 stayed with my exhusband and 1 I had to rehome as he refused to keep him and I was in bedsits, until I found a new forever home. I rehomed him to a work friend.

I have watched and waited for 2yrs before I got this one.

Please don't feel like you have to justify yourself to people on here OP.

Your pup is just gorgeous and she looks very content Grin

I don't understand your point, that comment wasn't directed at OP as she has ensured her puppy is from a breeder who ensures the welfare of their animals. @Wolfiefan was specifically talking about the people involved in this incredibly cruel business, it's right there in the quote you posted.
Laceandflowers383 · 30/06/2021 15:06

15:02BlaBlaSmthSmth if you think the below quote wasn't directly aimed at the OP then you're being very naive.

Yesterday 14:39Wolfiefan. Sod animal welfare eh? Never mind the lowlives breeding back to back litters from the bitches or what they do when these bitches are no longer any use to them. Just as long as you’ve got a cute puppy OP. I just hope there’s a special circle of hell for breeders like that and the people who like their pockets

As I said I can't speak for other threads, I was talking about the thread we are on. I don't understand why you'd get ripped apart for asking for advice though?
cupsofcoffee · 30/06/2021 15:17

I don't understand why you'd get ripped apart for asking for advice though?

It's happened numerous times, especially if posters dare to say they have a cockapoo or cavapoo or labradoodle - the thread diverts into a debate about the ethics of owning a poo or a doodle dog, and the OP is scared off the boards.

I've also read numerous threads on here where new puppy owners come on saying they're struggling with say, toilet training, and posters (and it's always the same ones) will pile on saying the OP can't have done their research - ignoring the fact that when you're stressed and the puppy has done it's tenth pee indoors that morning, you can forget everything you've ever read about toilet training Grin

I remember struggling with my beagle pup as a teenager but there is no way I would ever have posted on here about it! I'd have been so scared of being torn to shreds by certain people. I find some posters on here quite intimidating, tbh!

Laceandflowers383 · 30/06/2021 15:17

I don't understand why you'd get ripped apart for asking for advice though?

Stick around and you'll soon find out. There's some very militant opinions on this board, people are very passionate about the welfare of puppies and specifically how they're bred which is great but unfortunately some posters (and you'll see the same names cropping up) can be rude and argumentative when there's absolutely no provocation for it. They just seem to stalk the threads waiting to jump on anyone who doesn't conform to their standards. I've seen it time and time again. I've been personally attacked multiple times on here when asking for advice. It's really can be very unpleasant. This thread is very mild compared to some.

Laceandflowers383 · 30/06/2021 15:23

cupsofcoffee wow yes! Can you imagine if the OP was asking about a 'poo' breed, thank god it was a whippet 😄 I made the mistake of asking for advice on here when my boy was a pup and I got my arse well and truly handed to me, they made me feel like an awful human being (the topic was...wait for it....leaving him home alone for 2 hours!!) With hindsight I can see now that the replies were utterly ridiculous but at the time I took then very much to heart.

OP, I don't know of there's one running at the moment but there's usually a puppy thread where you will get fantastic support off people going through the same things. No judgement. Just don't venture off it and you'll be fine!

whippetwhappet · 30/06/2021 15:32

Ah she's a beaut, I have a whippet pup too and to add fuel to the fire I bred her myself

I show my whippets and wanted a pup from one of my bitches. All the other pups went to fully vetted homes and I'm still in touch with all the owners.

Enjoy Elsie and as an experienced whippet owner you'll know not to leave the bathroom door open, less they shred every loo roll in the joint!

BlaBlaSmthSmth · 30/06/2021 15:54

@cupsofcoffee and @Laceandflowers383 thanks for explaining. I was replying to what I saw at face value but there's obviously a lot more backstory to what goes on on this board that I didn't know.
I'm sorry for inserting myself into the board without knowing the full picture, but I genuinely do believe that we need to keep discussing these issues and I understand feelings can get heated when discussing something as upsetting as animal cruelty. I absolutely cannot stand the pile ons on this site though so I understand where you're coming from.

cupsofcoffee · 30/06/2021 15:59

I agree, but there's absolutely no need to dump it all on an innocent OP who has just asked about which sex of whippet pup people recommend!

If people want to discuss animal cruelty and puppy farms, they can start their own threads about it. There's nothing in OP's post that suggests the pup is farmed or that OP is funding a BYB. She could have rescued the pup for all anyone knows.

Fair enough, I didn't see it as dumping on the OP or making assumptions though, my thoughts are that asking questions about whether someone is aware that this is a risk (and asking about waiting lists etc) is sensible. And when someone is looking into finding a pet is the perfect time to bring it up! I'm not into dog piling people though so don't condone that approach.
Wolfiefan · 30/06/2021 16:24

Well if OP did source this pup responsibly then or doesn’t apply to them.
But I very much doubt they did. By far the majority of puppies sold in this country have a really poor start. That’s not magically healed by going to people who think they can provide a good home.
If people spent any time in rescue and saw how awful puppy farm bitches have it then I don’t think you’d disagree that the people responsible do indeed deserve the special level of hell.

Dazedandconfused170 · 30/06/2021 17:23

Give it a rest!!

Floralnomad · 30/06/2021 17:27

@Wolfiefan , why didn’t you actually rescue then rather than buying pedigree dogs if you are so concerned . Some of us actually do help by doing just that and no we may not have the exact breed that we would desire if we were going to a breeder but at least we have the satisfaction of knowing we are helping .

cupsofcoffee · 30/06/2021 17:40

This is exactly why I never post on here looking for advice. Some posters are still insistent that OP must have gone to a puppy farm or a backyard breeder.

Why the need to pile on? I really don't understand what it's supposed to achieve. If OP did buy from a puppy farm, they likely don't care what you say, so you're wasting your breath. And if she did everything correctly and either rescued or went to a proper breeder, then you're still wasting your breath as what you're ranting about doesn't apply to her.

Outbutnotoutout · 30/06/2021 17:57

I am a bit scared now to post if I ever have any issues, as I'm supposed to know exactly what I'm doing at every moment, just like parents of kids eh...

I agree puppy farming is disgusting, but please start your own thread about it, what to look out for etc

Thank you to the nice people who have made me and my pup welcome

It always happens unfortunately, but please don't feel put off. Your pup is gorgeous and there is plenty of good advice on here too :)

Please don't let a few rude/confrontational posters put you off.
