New Whippet

Outbutnotoutout · 28/06/2021 19:41

I might be a new whippet mummy tomorrow.
We are going to see some 11 wk old pups and I'm probably going to fall in love and come home with one.

I have owned whippets before, but need a bit of reminding.

Boy or girl?
I always from my girls to be a bit aloof at times, which makes the better pet?

What do I need?

The Kennel Club puppies section is full of pups for sale so I’m not convinced by some of the comments. The scramble for puppies has definitely died down and prices are falling.

OhDear2200 · 29/06/2021 19:43

Also OP where is the picture??? Grin

CurlyWurlyTwos · 29/06/2021 19:49

I LOVE my 6 month old boy whippet - but he is a bit daft Hmm……

Floralnomad · 29/06/2021 19:52

Quite honestly I’m surprised anyone posts about buying a puppy on here anymore as unless you are buying from a breeder who only breeds once every blue moon just to enhance the bloodline all you get is abuse or aggro . It’s a pity that some people can’t look beyond their own perfect dog that they waited forever for the breeder to breed and just be a bit nicer or at least a bit helpful rather than criticising .

Outbutnotoutout · 29/06/2021 19:55

Thank you to the nice posters 😊

I'm well aware of the whole puppy farming thing!!
The horrible posts have put a dampener on the whole thing.

People buy puppies, and can only be as careful as they can be. You don't know my circumstances so!!

She looks beautiful and very much at home already @Outbutnotoutout congratulations .

Laceandflowers383 · 29/06/2021 20:02

Congratulations on your new pup, she's beautiful!

something2say · 29/06/2021 20:11

Congratulations from me too.

tealappeal · 29/06/2021 20:13

So cute! I'm mummy to a whippet/collie cross. She's lovely - inherited the speed and soppiness of a whippet and none of the intelligence of a collie :-)

BlaBlaSmthSmth · 29/06/2021 22:32

Assumptions, much !!!!!

TBF OP you were asked plenty of questions about the breeder and you completely blanked them, so people are naturally going to assume there's a reason for that. Maybe the questions were too uncomfortable for you and you didn't want to be dissuaded 🤷‍♀️

It's really not about feeling superior about having a 'perfect' long awaited dog though is it (and I don't even have a dog so it's certainly not my motivation) but when you realise the disgusting cruelty that animals are put through it's impossible not to want to warn people. And it is a massive problem. Unfortunately some people are willing to ignore that so they can get their cute little puppy/kitten. OP didn't get abuse or agro she was asked questions (which she ignored) in an attempt to warn her to be cautious. You know, for the sake of animal welfare.

Floralnomad · 29/06/2021 23:52

@BlaBlaSmthSmth actually someone was abusive , the post was reported and removed .

Outbutnotoutout · 30/06/2021 07:40

Why is it anyone's business what breeder I used?

I had a choice of girl or boy puppy.. and was asking for ideas on which one.

You have no idea how much I paid, it could have been £5000 from a breeder or £10 and it doesn't matter.

Mumsnet has become so judgemental this last 18months. Its because people have go too much time on their hands and can't bare anyone having a bit if good news or fun !!!

OP doesn't have to answer to total strangers on the internet.

This forum is becoming increasingly full of
bile and judgement whenever anyone mentions getting a puppy Hmm

cupsofcoffee · 30/06/2021 08:09

Oh and congratulations OP - she is gorgeous Grin

Outbutnotoutout · 30/06/2021 09:29

Thank you, she is 🤗

We are off to the vets this morning for a check over, and she is insured.

So ticking all the dog owner boxes

It's a wonder anyone mentions the word puppy or breeder on this board anymore. It's unbelievable how quickly people get jumped on. The replies on this thread are disgusting and I can guarantee that had the OP replied to them it would have turned nasty because those posters have already made their mind up and are just here to pass to judgement and create arguments. I've seen it time and time again.

Enjoy your new pup OP.

Ok so "all you get is abuse or aggro" was actually one post?

Those posters were asking you about the breeder to be kind. I'm sure they assumed you wouldn't want to make a horrible mistake and would've given you advise.

In general I agree that at times MN can be full of nasty bitter posters, it pisses me off when I see people get piled on for no reason and will call that out when I see it. But that didn't happen here, puppy farming is a disgrace and needs to be discussed openly if it's going to be combatted.

OP posted about a puppy and people asked if she was sure she knew where the puppy was coming from..that's not bile and judgment. People are concerned when there's possible animal cruelty, that's natural.

Nobody said people "have to answer to total strangers" where did you get that from? But if she had answered questions she'd probably have gotten a different response.

SunnySideDownBriefly · 30/06/2021 10:49

She's so gorgeous! We picked up a girl pup the night before the first lockdown and I can't believe it has taken me so long to be a dog owner again...they just make day-to-day life so much more content and we all absolutely love her. I'm sure you are going to be very happy with her :)

Floralnomad · 30/06/2021 11:12

@BlaBlaSmthSmth the OP says in her opening post that she has had dogs before so she is not someone who is new to dogs looking for advice . She has also said in later posts that the tone of some of the posts has taken the shine off posting for her , posts don’t need to be openly abusive to actually bother someone . If you want to discuss puppy farming then start a thread about it , you and the others like you don’t need to bring your opinions to a thread where they were not asked for .

Someone having had dogs before doesn't mean they're responsible and it doesn't mean they are well informed about the cruelty involved in puppy breeding. The posters wanting to check OP was informed did nothing wrong in coming to a thread about someone looking to by a puppy.

There are some amazing posters on this site with a lot of knowledge to share (not me) and an obvious passion for animal welfare. The PPs accusing them of abuse, bile, judgement and "putting a dampener on the experience" are out of order, and I'll point that out.
Like I said, there is nothing wrong in wanting people to be informed about potential animal cruelty and I fully support those posters who pop onto threads to share their knowledge 🤷‍♀️

Floralnomad · 30/06/2021 11:39

Unfortunately some of these posters that you talk about @BlaBlaSmthSmth have now put people off coming to The Doghouse to ask questions and that is not a good thing because as you say there is some good advice to be had here . Perhaps it’s the manner in which some people post .

lockef · 30/06/2021 11:48

My friend has just bred her dog and has 1 puppy left - lots of people who put their names down for the puppies have pulled out and she has had to halve the price.

My friend is just breeding one litter from her family pet, but the market seems to have dried up a lot. I hope this means a lot less puppy/kitten farming.
Apart from the welfare/cruelty aspect the health of the puppies/kittens is terrible - they seem to die at a very great number compared to well bred dogs brought up in family homes.

I’m sure your friend’s pup will find a great home in the end. Breeding one litter from a family pet used to be quite usual unless you were really interested in breeding KC pedigree show dogs - I bred a beautiful litter of JRT types that all went to good homes, and I asked for the going rate for puppies at the time, certainly didn’t make a profit.

There’s been so much publicity about the demand for puppies (at ridiculous prices) since lockdown that I posted early in this thread with a genuine question about the OP’s situation with the litter of whippet puppies.

I also hope demand drops and that puppy farming becomes unprofitable, it’s the only way it’ll be stopped. Although I dread that also means that rescue charities are going to be overwhelmed in the next few years.
