Do you allow your dogs on the sofa? If you do, do you have any rules? Grin

With older dog, when she was a pup and testing boundaries, it was a firm no. Now, she’s allowed on if invited up and only if a human is on - in that she goes up for cuddles so has to sit with the human. She would sneak up when we’re out and so we would put a throw out that she will lie on. Pup has not been invited to the sofa and hopefully won’t be invited on.

We’re getting a new sofa tomorrow, so older dog is also going to be banished from the sofa (hopefully).

Santaiscovidfree · 12/01/2021 14:18

Pointy hounds having a nap. ..

Pipandmum · 12/01/2021 14:22

Yes. They like to be on pillows or throws on the sofa though. They don't ask permission though but are good at coming off if told.

Syrrup · 12/01/2021 14:29

Yup, he has his own spot - it's a sofa with a chaise lounge sticky out bit, he has the whole chaise lounge part. He's very big and doesn't really fit any more but it's still his favourite place to be! We keep a blanket there so he lies on that and it's a leather sofa so easy to clean.

Yep our frenchie is allowed. Partly why we got a dog so we could cuddle him on the sofa! Cat has her permanent spot too😏🥰

Yes, we do. However, my dog does not shed

Paws wiped coming in from outside

Dog to groomer every 5 weeks and bathed as needed between visits

So we don’t have any dog hair, no wet or dirty paws snd no wet dog smell. I wouldn’t do this with other breeds of dogs necessarily

Hoppinggreen · 12/01/2021 15:32

Snacz he would ignore us and if we went to grab him to move him he would mouth our hands. Not especially aggressively but just in a “screw you I’m not moving” kind of way. He’s a larger breed so it would have been an effort to drag him off and we didn’t want to escalate it. He was going to puppy classes at the time and the Trainer said it was best to just not allow him on in the first place.

MissShapesMissStakes · 12/01/2021 15:42

We intended on not allowing him to. But he was so cute when he arrived! Plus we all ended up sitting on the floor so he could snuggle with us.

So now he's allowed. But he's a mini poodle. They don't shed and don't really have the usual dog smell either.

He loves to snuggle up with someone. But he does also have his own bed and will sometimes choose to use that instead.
If anyone is eating on the settee though he knows he's not allowed up then. Just seems to have picked up that rule.

He's so neat and tidy. Sleeps like a cat sometimes, and can merge into the cushions too.

Yes, but she's a whippet so it's kind of a necessity 🤷‍♀️

Floomobal · 12/01/2021 16:06

Yes, although we carefully manage lifting him on and off currently, as he’s just a puppy. He’s a 10 week old Labrador, who loves to curl up on my lap, and I have no intention of stopping him, even when he’s a 30kg heffalump Grin

Santaiscovidfree · 12/01/2021 16:38

We can't lift one of our ddogs as she is too boney and yelps!! Or maybe it's a cover to stay asleep wherever she likes!

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 12/01/2021 16:38

yes, it sort of migrated from no dogs on the sofa, to only if a blanket was up there, first dog was also happy to ask first, second dog never really bothered

subsequent pups have mostly been in training for GuideDogs, so it's a no for them whilst in training, but the ones we have had back all seem to celebrate by taking up residence on the sofa in the window

Current dog will settle himself on the dog sofa or the giant one in the other room, but has separation anxiety so is rarely more than a foot away from me or dh at any given moment and letting him settle on the sofa seems to be improving that...I guess he is getting settled and realising it's not worth the aggro of following vs staying comfy :o

Only real sofa rules are no ostentatious cleaning of bodily parts, no nibbing cushions or blankets and no staring at food if anyone is eating. Otherwise smooching and nesting in blankets is encouraged.

Don't judge the racy animal print and shaggy cushions....that is a bargain sofa from the auctions and they came with it. I am growing to love them!

harriethoyle · 12/01/2021 16:40

That and not going upstairs are the only rules I enforce strictly. However the scene that greeted me when I got home yesterday made me think there's still work to be done... Grin those cushions were perfect when I left!

Santaiscovidfree · 12/01/2021 16:51

But Harriet your ddog has clearly napped on the floor with 2 cushions!!

Collidascope · 12/01/2021 17:05

Just to add, ours wasn't allowed on the sofa until he was about 18 months and he'd gone through his puppy and adolescent rebellion. This, however, was the sight that greeted us for his first few mornings when he was a baby. Until we started turning the sofa to the wall, that is.

blowinahoolie · 12/01/2021 17:06

St Bernard owner here - no chance!🤣

Literaryseed · 12/01/2021 17:08

Yes to sofa (gets us 10 mins of peace!) But no to bed.

Happytentoes · 12/01/2021 17:19

Only if their blanket is on it, and they know to wait until I spread it out. Likewise the bed.
I have a large collection of throws and Vamoosh.
I actually think they feel our sofas are gross unless their blanket is on and I, as the slave, is merely making life more comfortable

ArcherDog · 12/01/2021 17:34

Absolutely not Blush
I love our evening cuddles

Shall I allow my horse on the sofa? She's a pet...

@MaidofKent78 don't be so ridiculous 🙄 what are you, 12?

HappyThursdays · 12/01/2021 19:45

I love my cuddles with ddog on the couch Blush but if we tell him to get off, he has to get off, that's the deal and he seems to get it (sometimes Grin)

harriethoyle · 12/01/2021 19:45

@Santaiscovidfree Grin Grin

Baileysoncereal · 13/01/2021 00:50

Dog allowed in sofa if no one in there
If someone is there then ddog can only get on sofa if invited up.

To be honest though it’s more hassle than it’s worth, snuggling up to a warm dog in the evening is lovely so I don’t really care about the jumping up. We were doing it because of being polite with guests but we’ve had about 3 sets of guests over since we got ddog 18 months ago

Chasingsquirrels · 13/01/2021 00:59

Nope, mines not allowed 🤨
