What's the most unusual breed in your street?

I know that unusual is subjective as a breed could be rare in one area but there could be several elsewhere, but I'm just curious to know what the most unusual breed is in your street or area.

Here it's probably a Kerry Blue.

I used to have a Tibetan spaniel so that was probably the most unusual in the last area I lived in, though a neighbour had a Giant Munsterlander and I haven't seem many of those around.

I live near someone with 2 great pyrenees, they are absolutely gorgeous!

FondantIcing · 31/10/2020 09:08

Thank you all for responding. It's interesting to see which breeds are in people's areas. I don't have a preference for more unusual breeds but it's nice to spot them occasionally. I envy you all your lovely dogs, regardless of breed.

The most unusual dog I've probably met was a New Zealand Huntaway. I don't think there are many around in the UK.

Bunnybigears I think gorgeous covers him. Is he a Romanian rescue? If so I have one too.

@FondantIcing yes he is Romanian, well spotted.

PolarBearStrength · 31/10/2020 09:14

Our village is tiny so it’s probably a Welsh Cardigan Corgi or a Patterdale based purely on there only being one of each of those.

There are a handful of labs, a couple of Dalmatians, some
Jack Russells, a Parsons Russell, a collie or two, a few schnauzers, and an old greyhound.

GrouchyKiwi · 31/10/2020 09:15

Fondant I love Huntaways. They are such beautiful, clever dogs.

alpinia · 31/10/2020 09:18

The park near our house seems to be the place to walk your unusual dog breeds. Almost every time I walk there I see a breed I've rarely seen in real life. In the last week or so I've seen a giant munsterlander, 3 clumber spaniels, a Scottish deer hound, a phu quoc, a Chinese crested, a nova Scotia duck tolling retriever, a curly coat retriever and a briard. It's like watching crufts sometimes!

FondantIcing · 31/10/2020 09:23

Bunnybigears. I love his Halloween jumper too. He's adorable.

There’s a Japanese spitz in my area, it’s absolutely beautiful, Snow White coat and a black nose like a polar bear. There’s also a Keeshond, a Dutch barge dog and another kind of spitz, i often meet in one of the parks.

The oddest dog breed I’ve ever met were a pair of black Russian terriers. They’re not actually terriers at all, they are a giant crossbreed, this is from Wikipedia “Despite its name, the Black Russian Terrier is not a true terrier: it is believed that about seventeen breeds were used in its development, including the Airedale, the Giant Schnauzer, the Rottweiler, the Newfoundland, the Caucasian Shepherd Dog and other breeds” they were created in the USSR as military and working dogs. I didn’t speak to their owners for long enough to find out why they had them, but they were certainly very niche dogs.

FondantIcing · 31/10/2020 09:27

GrouchyKiwi. They certainly seem to be. He was a gorgeous boy though I had absolutely no idea what he was until I was told. That was a long time ago so he won't still be with us but hopefully there are a few other representatives of his breed in the U.K.

Our region is all spaniels and labradors.

sunshineandshowers21 · 31/10/2020 09:47

the woman a few doors down has two massive st bernards that my little girl is obsessed with. they’re the soppiest things ever and their owner always stops so my daughter can stroke them. apart from that we’re the only other family with dogs. we’ve got a greyhound and two lurchers.

SimonJT · 31/10/2020 09:49

Probably mine, hes a shiba inu, so not actually unusual. Our neighbour has a french bulldog and two basset hounds.

DontGoIntoTheLongGrass · 31/10/2020 09:50

We had a white German shepherd until last year. There's two Irish setters on the street too.

motherofgod2 · 31/10/2020 10:16

On the next steeet down there's an American Bulldog. I'd never heard of them before, looks like a big staffie but also a bit like a boxer. Very old and slow so I don't know what they're like really. Our neighbour has a Bull Mastiff who stands out because he's so big as most people round here have spaniels, small terriers or doodle mixes. He's a lovely big soft dog, obsessed with his ball.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 31/10/2020 10:31

Mostly round here it's labs, spaniels, terriers, lurchers, cokerpoos and the odd retired greyhound, with a smattering of staffies, HPRs and collies. Lots of new houses though and a lot more French bulldogs, pugs, dachshunds, small fluffy things etc are appearing.

There have always been some unusual dogs around. There's a huntaway on a local farm (agree with PP, gorgeous dog), a very well-groomed Eurasier and a Bavarian mountain hound.

The most unusual dog I know is a Braque d'Auvergne owned by a friend.

BibbityBobbityBellend · 31/10/2020 10:32

@tabulahrasa are they fashionable? They shouldn't be. They're an absolute nightmare! I'd say huskies are similar in attitude. They're spitz breed as well aren't they.

I love my dog and I'd never get rid of him as I'm a staunch believer that a dogs for life but I don't recommend Akita's as a breed now. I used to believe it's not the breed it's the owner but he is the strangest dog. So nervous and aggressive with it. He's comfortable with us now and it's a lovely bond.

Sophoa · 31/10/2020 10:36

I’m not sure there’s anyone on our street who doesn’t have a poo

FondantIcing · 31/10/2020 10:36

She might be an exception but an Akita I know is one of the nicest dogs I've ever met. She's very friendly and playful and brilliant with strangers. Not at all aggressive.

There are heaps of cockapoos here, spaniels, collies, lurchers, greyhounds and staffies. The unusual ones are two beautiful Airedales, a tolling retriever, a Bernese mountain dog, a silver Great Dane, a couple of Vislas. I’d love a Great Dane but apparently this one was the runt of the litter and it comes up to my ribs!

MaryLennoxsScowl · 31/10/2020 10:52

Oh, and there’s someone with two Leonbergers too! I’d never seen them before.

Magpiecomplex · 31/10/2020 11:01

There's a Chow-chow near here. Small children always call it a lion dog.

tabulahrasa · 31/10/2020 11:50

“are they fashionable? They shouldn't be. They're an absolute nightmare! I'd say huskies are similar in attitude. They're spitz breed as well aren't they. “

Yeah they’re fashionable among, well certain types of people...

I mean, some of them are owned by people who picked them for the same reasons anyone picks a breed obviously, but some it’s definitely an image/status thing... sadly.

thecapitalsunited · 31/10/2020 11:56

Someone locally has a Puli. I love seeing his coat bounce along. I saw a Shar Pei puppy out walking last week. But on my street I have the most unusual dog - a Cardigan Corgi.

pixellott · 31/10/2020 13:10

A borzoi.....a very big dog!
